In the early morning of May 12th, dozens of volunteers from UT-Battelle started a historic endeavor: ADFAC’s f i r s t - e v e r v o l u n t e e r -constructed new home in Oak Ridge. This special house commemorates ADFAC’s 25th anniversary and is made possible through a partnership with UT-Battelle, the City of Oak Ridge, and THDA. Licensed contractors will be used for some o f t h e h o m e ’s infrastructure, but the vast majority of the hands-on construction has been completed by skilled UT-Battelle craft laborers, using tools also provided by UT-Battelle.

F o u r S a t u r d a y w o r k d a y s h a v e already occurred, and each time the site was brimming with as many as 40 skilled volunteers hammering nails, measuring and cutting lumber, installing siding and countless other tasks. Week by week, the community has been able to see the amazingly fast progress of the construction of the home. One final workday will be scheduled in the future to complete landscaping for the home. If you haven’t already seen it, be sure to drive by!

Community comes together to build ADFAC’s 25th Anniversary House

The home is located on Robertsville Road (across the street from the middle school) in Oak Ridge and is a three-bedroom and 1 bathroom residence. Once finished, it will be ENERGY STAR-certified and one of the most energy-efficient homes in town.

This is good news for the soon-to-be new homeowner, who will enjoy low utilities bills as a result. The homeowner will make payments on a low-interest mortgage and has completed over 8 hours of homebuyer education.

In addition to the support provided by UT-Battelle and ATLC members from ORNL, many individuals, churches and businesses also pitched in to support the

project. Robertsville Baptist Church provided space for parking, a cool place for the volunteers to sit down and enjoy lunch, and prepared lunch on the first Saturday. ORNL employees provided breakfast and lunch on two of the Saturdays, and First Cumberland Presbyterian Church prepared lunch on one of the Saturdays. ORUD provided reusable bottles for water and PODS of Knoxville donated a storage unit.

Special thanks are in order for long-time volunteer

Tim Myrick, who acted as the liaison between ADFAC & UT-Battelle, Ann Bryant and Leigha Edwards, the extraordinary coordinators from ORNL, and ADFAC Construction Manager Bronzie Harris, who took on this vast project with

skill and professionalism. Finally, thank you to Chris Lane Construction for the willingness to work alongside us and the volunteers.

Once completed, ADFAC will host an Open House - visit www.adfac.org in August for more details! The 25th Anniversary House is part of the larger celebration of ADFAC’s 25th year, which is sponsored by BWXT Y-12, UT-Battelle, and WSI Oak Ridge.

ORHS graduate receives 2012 Myrick Scholarship

School has just ended, but ADFAC is already gearing up for the annual School Supplies Program for K-12 Anderson County, Clinton City and Oak Ridge City students. In fact, it’s a very busy time around our offices, as we are preparing to distribute supplies to an estimated 1,500 students!

The program is unique and effective because instead of giving out pre-filled backbacks with a few customary supplies, we allow each child to choose the color and style of the supplies required by the school.

Purchased and donated supplies are set up to look like a store, where a volunteer assists each child in choosing the required items on the supply list provided by his or her school.

ADFAC often hears from parents afterwards about how much their children enjoyed making their own choices, and how much pride they have taken in their new belongings. What a difference it makes for a child to be able to proudly raise his or her hand when the teacher asks who has brought in their supplies!

The program receives support from Variety of Eastern Tennessee, Altrusa/Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary, the Aslan Foundation, and Safeco Insurance. The program also depends on the generosity of the local community to serve many additional families. If you or your group is interested in supporting the program, p lease contact Dor is Doherty at 483-6028, ext, 106 for more information.

On May 23rd, ORUD held a grilling demonstration and fundraiser for ADFAC’s Project SAFE.

Kimberly Anthony from Napoleon G r i l l s g a v e 3 f r e e g r i l l i n g demonstrations from 11 until 2, and ORUD sold tasty hot dog lunches for $3, with all proceeds going to support Project SAFE.

Project SAFE is one of the longest-running programs at ADFAC. One-time or recurring monthly donations are collected from ORUD customers, and in turn these funds are used by ADFAC to ensure disadvantaged families in the area maintain essential heat in their homes. All donations go directly to help needy families - no administrative funds are taken out.

It’s easy to support Project SAFE. Visit ORUD’s website at https://orud.org/AboutORUD/ADFAC.aspx for detailed information about SAFE and how you can contribute.

ORUD has held other Project SAFE fundraisers in the past, including the annual

“Warm a Heart and Heat a Home” Valentine’s Day

event, where candy, flowers, balloons and stuffed animals were sold to raise money for SAFE.

We feel very fortunate that ORUD is so dedicated to supporting Project SAFE and the families who receive assistance. Thank you, ORUD!
