Case Study: “Undergraduate Interviewing"

Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management runs an elite two-year certificate program for undergraduates. Students apply to take classes on analytics, management and a number of math-focused topics to prepare them for analyst roles in banking, consulting and finance. These students are extremely confident in number-crunching, however they report lacking confidence in interview situations, especially those students for whom English is a second language. Improvisation for Undergraduate Business Students In this 90-minute workshop, students practiced speaking professionally and extemporaneously in a variety of settings. They worked on new ways to convert their personal experiences inside and outside of the classroom into personal stories they could adapt to answer a range of interview questions. Throughout the workshop, participants refined and reworked their stories to clearly demonstrate the transferrable skills potential employers are looking for. In addition, students worked to “get out of their shells” in front of each other to embrace their unique points of view and convert public speaking anxiety into focused energy.
