OAJA TRAINING PROGRAMME September 2009 – May 2010

2 www.cgjungontario.com

Dear ATP Candidates: As your new Director of Training I want to welcome you to our 10th Training year! If you are just starting, I am extending to you a special welcome. May you experience the beginning of a very rewarding and exciting journey, a journey of exploration into the work of C.G. Jung, a journey of discovery and personal growth. If you are coming back, I hope this year will provide you with further personal enrichment, and an increasing passion for and understanding of Jungian psychology, bringing you a step closer to your goals. I am here to help. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at 416 469-2423 or at [email protected]. My very best wishes for this coming year, Caroline Duetz

Training Programme Registration Procedures

1) Training candidates must pre-register

by form for all seminars and workshops in which they wish to participate.

2) Where enrolment limitations are specified, registrations will be recorded on a first-come/first-admitted basis once registration has opened.

3) In order to equalize mailing times registration will commence on July 31, 2009. Get your registration forms in early. They will be processed in random order by the office beginning on July 31, 2009.

4) Deadline for registration will be August 21, 2009 for the first semester and December 11, 2009 for the second semester. Within three business days following registration deadlines, courses with less than five registrants will be cancelled. Those who register for courses that are cancelled will be notified and given one week to register for other courses not yet filled. N.B. Your pre-registration is very important if courses are to run.

5) Register on the accompanying forms by checking course number (1000, 1016, etc.) and title of the offering only.

6) Send to the office, 223 St. Clair Ave. W., Third Floor, Toronto, Ontario, Canada M4V 1R3, only by mail or fax (416-961-6659). This registration form will be returned to you, as your official record, confirming your choices and/or advising you of adjustments where necessary.

7) N.B. Should you register for two concurrently running courses, the office will register you for the first-named course only.

8) Unregistered candidates will not be admitted to courses.

9) Non-attendance has been a problem. This is discourteous to presenters and to fellow candidates who may be on a waiting list. Registration carries with it the responsibility to attend, which is why candidates sign an attendance form for each class. Please advise the office and the presenter as soon as you know you are unable to attend. Personal emergencies are, of course, given consideration; but in a country like ours, that does not (most times) include the weather. Non-attendance may affect your registration in future semesters.

First Semester – Fall 2009 1000 The Medical Model Heather Flett Thurs., Sep. 17, Oct. 15, Nov. 19, Dec. 10, Feb. 18, Mar. 18 7-10pm Third Floor, 223 St. Clair Ave. W.

A continuing review of the Major Axis 1 Disorders (Depressive, Anxiety, Psychotic) plus Personality Disorders.

1001 CQ100 Leader: Graham Jackson Fri., Sep. 18, Oct. 16, Nov. 20, Dec. 11 4-6:30pm Third Floor, 223 St. Clair Ave. W.

1002 Public Lecture at Trinity College Robert Gardner Of Two Minds: The Ambivalent Father Fri., Sep. 18 George Ignatieff Theatre, 15 Devonshire Place. 8- 10pm

From the earliest times we have been told stories of fathers who have tried to silence their children in one way or another. We only need look at Greek mythology where the original father gods, Uranus and Kronos, swallowed their children when told that one of them would overthrow the old order and way of doing things. The story of Oedipus and his abandonment by his father is similar.

What is it then that lies behind this urge to create new life on the one hand, yet destroy it on the other?

To explore this deep psychological drama and see how it plays out in the modern psyche, we will focus on contemporary films. The destructive aspect will be seen in Prelude To A Kiss, Damage and The Celebration. The resolution, where the human spirit is freed to create a new life, will be explored in The Piano. Our discussion will aim towards having a better appreciation of the ambivalent nature of the father and its dramatic effect on a wide range of human experiences.

1003 CQ101 Leader: Laurie Savlov Sat., Sep. 19, Oct. 17, Nov. 21, Dec. 12 10am-12:30pm 153 Ranleigh Ave., Suite 301, Toronto Limit: 8 Stage Two candidates

1004 Pictures from the Unconscious Rosemarie Kennedy Sat., Sep. 19 Third Floor, 223 St. Clair Ave. W. 1 0am-4pm

“To paint what we see before us is a different art from painting what we see within.” C.G. Jung, CW 16, para.102.

It was C.G. Jung who introduced the use of drawings and paintings as significant tools of psycho-diagnosis and psychotherapy. He was convinced that paintings originating from within give shape to the painter as they give shape to the fantasies that are active.

During this seminar a method of interpreting pictures from the unconscious will be offered. As well, a significant preparation for our work with the individual case will be to note the relationship between the process of individuation and rites of initiation. Finally, case material, including artwork done during the first eighteen months of the analytical process of a woman approaching mid-life, will be used for study purposes.

1005 “Prince Ring” and Other Fairy Tales Dorothy Gardner Sun., Sep. 20, Oct. 18, Nov. 22, Dec. 13 9:30am-12:30pm Third Floor, 223 St. Clair Ave. W.

Working with fairy tales is something of an art that benefits from practice, patience and a careful consideration of the symbols involved. This seminar will give us a chance to work on a tale and present it to the group for further discussion. The first seminar will be on “Prince Ring,” an Icelandic tale. 1006 CQ102 The Body in Analysis and Dreams Leader: Paul Benedetto Sun., Sep. 20 Board Room, Trinity College 1 0am-2pm

A one-day colloquium that will look at the symbolic and pre-symbolic expression of the body in dreams, in the analytic frame, and in the everyday lives of analysands. Participants who would like to present case material are asked to contact Paul in advance.

1008 Addiction and Therapy John Whittall Sat. Oct. 17 Third Floor, 223 St. Clair Ave. W. 9 :30am-12:30pm

Beginning with a definition of addiction, participants will be asked to consider some of the following questions: a) at what point is therapy appropriate for addicts and what questions does it attempt to answer for the addict; b) how do you tell if someone is an addict; c) what do you do with an addict who is not in recovery; and, finally, d) what is recovery? A history of Alcoholics Anonymous and a look at the famous twelve steps will also be offered and the particular usefulness of Jungian analysis will be discussed. 1009 Tim Pilgrim Putting Jung into Practice: Complexes and the Analytic Encounter Sat., Oct. 17, Nov. 21 Third Floor, 223 St. Clair Ave. W. 2- 4:30pm

This seminar-workshop will develop a working understanding of Jung’s ideas about complexes to help understand and track their operation during the analytic encounter. We will explore the manifestation and clinical importance of complexes as body and soul phenomena, as well as their role in dreams and transference/counter-transference dynamics. N.B. A reading list will be available in the office at the beginning of the semester.

1010 The Word Association Experiment Robert Gardner Part I: Sun., Oct. 18, Nov. 22 2-4:30pm Part II: Sun., Mar. 21*, Apr. 18, May 16 2-4:30pm Third Floor, 223 St. Clair Ave. W. (*On Mar. 21, the class meets at TC 22 – ask

1011 Public Lecture at Trinity College Tim Pilgrim Dying to Get Ahead: Ambition and the Art of Individuation Fri., Nov. 20 George Ignatieff Theatre, 15 Devonshire Place. 8- 10pm

Ambition has many faces. It can appear as intense desire, a desperate hungering after success or an overwrought need for fame and power. However, in its benign aspects, ambition reflects genuine desires that give individuals the energy and focus necessary to move through life, fulfill goals and realize themselves.

Using visual materials including art, dreams and the symbols of alchemy, this lecture will examine the inner workings of ambition. As we will discover, ambition is produced by an interaction of consciousness with unconscious factors that can be confusing, frustrating, painful or dangerously pleasurable. If properly held and understood, ambition provides opportunities for self-realization that help us move through life and connect with our world. 1012 Sun and Moon: Myths and Dreams Helen Brammer-Savlov Sat., Nov. 21, Dec. 12 10am-12:30pm

Third Floor, 223 St. Clair Ave. W.

Seminar 1 will consist of an illustrated presentation exploring through myth and story the archetypal symbolism carried by the two primary celestial bodies of our solar system. Alchemical images and dreams will be provided by the seminar leader for individual home study in preparation for Seminar 2. 1013 CQ103 Leader: Paul Benedetto Sun., Nov. 22, Dec. 13, Sat., Feb. 20, Apr. 17 10am-12:30pm

Board Room, Trinity College, 6 Hoskin Ave.

1014 Jung on Myth Robert Black Fri., Dec. 11, Jan. 22, Feb. 19 7.30-9.30pm

Third Floor, 223 St. Clair Ave. W. This class will look at Jung’s notions on myth, and explore their application to analytical work through work on mythic stories of interest to participants. (In the first session, we will mull over the story of Narcissus.) Because Jung’s comments are scattered throughout his works, and operate more by intuitive leap than logical progression, they resist easy summary and distillation. But if we understand myth as a culturally elaborated representation of archetypal patterns, we can see their potential to reveal key aspects of the psyche. We are not alone with our feelings, fears, conflicts and aspirations; “our” myth can be a crucial guide to greater depth, richness and meaning in life.

A look at Bernardo Bertolucci’s stunning 1970 film, The Conformist, set in fascist Italy. A bourgeois man, terrified of his own shadow, adopts a heartless persona modelled on the masculine ideal promulgated by Mussolini, which falters only as he falls under the sway of a beautiful, charismatic woman. What ensues makes for one of the most gripping psychological narratives ever filmed.

Jan. 23 Third Floor, 223 St. Clair Ave. W. 9:30am-12pm

An exploration of the joint concept of liminality and ritual through its first articulation by anthropologist Victor Turner and its psychological meaning. 1018 The Dreamtime: a Religious Way of Life Robert Gardner Sat., Jan. 23 Third Floor, 223 St. Clair Ave. W. 2- 5pm

For the traditional Australian aborigine, the Tjukurpa or Dreamtime was the time when the ancestor spirits created physical forms out of a world that was otherwise without features. These same spirits also established the rules, laws and kinship systems which regulate the life of the tribe and the individual. We will focus on one of the aboriginal creation myths and some film clips of aboriginal Australia to see how we can understand the work of these spirits, and whether they continue to manifest in the psyche. N.B. Reading material will be sent to participants prior to the seminar.

1019 Elisabeth Pomès The Individuation Process: An Exploration of the Film, Central Station Sun., Jan. 24 Third Floor, 223 St. Clair Ave. W. 1 0am-3pm

In Central Station a cynical, joyless woman (Dora) crosses paths with a lonely boy (Josue) who is looking for his father. Together, they go on a long journey into places geographically and psychologically unknown to them. After watching the movie, we will discuss themes found in the movie that relate to the individuation process: meetings with the shadow, answering the call, dealing with crisis, the manifestation of the transcendent, renewal through the child archetype and the theme of sacrifice - finding the treasure and letting it go. 1020 Jung in Philosophical Perspective Roger LaRade Sat., Feb. 20 Third Floor, 223 St. Clair Ave. W. 10am-12:30pm

Who were Jung’s philosophical mentors and how does their thinking find expression in Jung’s thought? What contributions has Jung made to philosophy? Why does it matter? This seminar will explore the philosophical presuppositions, conceptions, and contributions found in Jung’s writings. 1021 Geri Daigneault A Knight at the Movies, a Journey on the Road of Life and a Mystical Spring: Bergman Film Series II Sat. Feb. 20, Apr. 17, May 15 2-5pm

Third Floor, 223 St. Clair Ave. W.

The Bergman Series continues with a focus, this time, on the Nordic auteur’s period of greatest popularity, the 1950’s. The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, and The Virgin Spring are resonant with varying notions of God’s intervention in our everyday lives. Belief in God is scrutinized, as are Bergman’s other principal themes, which are present throughout his impressive oeuvre: death, marriage, and narcissism.

The title of the first film in the series, The Seventh Seal, has its origin in the book of Revelation. On a more personal level, Bergman, as a child, was inspired by his viewing of a church mural, which included “Death playing chess with a Crusader.” Wild Strawberries centres on the elderly protagonist’s experience of narcissistic isolation. The plot line of The Virgin Spring is based on a fourteenth-century Swedish religious ballad. Here, God’s existence is questioned, and light is shone on such themes as the discrepancy between the Self and the persona, and the presence of dissonance in marital relationships. 1022 Fairy Tales Ingrid Eisermann Sun. Feb. 21, Mar. 21, Apr. 18, May 16 10am-12:30pm

Third Floor, 223 St. Clair Ave. W.

The meaning of four fairy tales will be explored focusing on what these archetypal stories tell us about the basic patterns of the psyche.

327 Lippincott St., Toronto Limit: 6 Stage Two candidates 1024 Neurobiology and Neurosis Caroline Duetz Sun. Feb. 21, Mar. 21 Third Floor, 223 St. Clair Ave. W. 2- 5pm

In this day and age, no study of the psyche is complete without a study of the biology of the brain. Recent advances in brain-imaging technology have significantly increased our understanding of the neuro-chemical underpinnings of psychological processes. What is also known is that the infant’s developing brain is wired according to its emotional environment. Repeatedly firing nerve patterns then dictate how the child, and later the adult, habitually responds to the world. In these two seminars we will explore such questions as: What is brain plasticity? What happens in the brain during early childhood trauma? What is the link between addictions and brain chemistry? What happens in the brain during analysis? How do the concepts of Jungian Psychology and Brain Biology intersect? 1025 Public Lecture at Trinity College Gary Sparks The Matter of Fate: Synchronicity and Numbers in Jungian Psychology Fri., Mar. 19 Combination Room, Trinity College 8- 10pm

The psychology of numbers intrigued Jung in the final creative phase of his life. Friday’s lecture will explore this interest and its further exposition in the writings of Marie-Louise von Franz. Hardly dry and abstract, the role of numbers in dreams shows them to be dynamic symbols of life’s most significant processes: the birth of selfhood; the growth of destiny; the life of synchronistic phenomena; the bridge between matter and spirit, desire and meaning. Dreams from the analytic practice will be considered throughout the evening to demonstrate the relevance of Jung’s late insights to the West’s evolving worldview as well as to the process of analysis. Lecture format with images and discussion. 1026 A Seminar on the Psychology of the Transference Gary Sparks Sat. Mar. 20 Third Floor, 223 St. Clair Ave. W. 1 0am-4pm

Jung’s essay on transference explores the role of sexual desire in the analytic process. Often harrowing and frustrating, the presence of lust and sexual tension between analyst and analysand can signal the entry of transformation into the consulting room—if passion’s existence is genuinely understood. In addition to surveying Jung’s text concerning erotic fire within the psychological journey, the seminar will investigate a case study illustrating the healing of anorexia nervosa through Eros in the therapeutic relationship. The Psychology of the Transference, dedicated to Jung’s wife, is a sensitive inquiry into the mature

significance of sexual fantasies, and the seminar will attempt to do its insights justice. Seminar format with images. 1027 Organic Brain Syndrome John Davis Thurs., Apr. 15 Third Floor, 223 St. Clair Ave. W. 7-10pm

This seminar will highlight issues related to acquired brain injury that are likely to be encountered during therapy. Participants are invited to discuss case vignettes (without identifying information) so that brain injury issues can be identified in the context of clinical narratives. Strategies for recognizing and addressing the sequelae of brain injury will be outlined. 1028 Elisa beth Pomès Pathological Gambling: Misstep on the Path of Individuation Fri., Apr. 16 Third Floor, 223 St. Clair Ave. W. 8-10pm

Three main thesis themes will be examined: (1) Ego isolation – escape from the responsibilities of the present, (2) Ego dissolution – the casino as the womb-like paradise (music, symbols, hypnosis), (3) Ego inflation – playing at being God. All of these themes represent missteps on the path of individuation. Testimonies of pathological gamblers (interviews, dreams), excerpts from F. Dostoevsky’s The Gambler, and excerpts from movies will be used to support the thematic analysis. Discussion will follow the mini-lecture. 1029 Evil Roger LaRade Sat., Apr. 17 Third Floor, 223 St. Clair Ave. W. 9 :30am-12:30pm

C.G. Jung wrote a great deal about evil. We will explore Jung’s conception of evil with reference to other systems of conceptualization. 1030 Nine of Wands: The Great Boundary Question Graham Jackson Fri., May 14 Third Floor, 223 St. Clair Ave. W. 8- 10pm

We live in a world very concerned with boundaries, with both their construction and destruction or, at least, infringement. This concern, felt at the most intimately personal as well as global levels, begins in infancy and ends only with death. Drawing on material ranging from dreams and poetry to political events, this lecture will consider boundaries from a Jungian perspective, giving particular emphasis to pathological boundary-making and –breaking.

1031 The Black Madonna Rosemary Murray-Lachapelle Sat., May 15 Third Floor, 223 St. Clair Ave. W. 10am -12pm

The Black Madonna is an image of great antiquity which, historically, has inspired cults and been credited with miracles. Today there is a new wave of interest in the symbol as may be seen in contemporary writing and art. What accounts for this appeal over time and for its renewed vigour in the twenty-first century? Historically, continuity and contemporary interest in the symbol suggest that it answers to a deeply held need in the human psyche. In the first part of the seminar the Black Madonna will be situated in historical and cultural context with a focus on the Madonna of Montserrat, Spain, as an example. Psychological implications of the symbol will be considered within the framework of C.G. Jung’s thought on the Great Mother and will include reference to how the symbol appears in dreams and creative work. In the second part of the seminar, participants will explore the symbol to discover what the Black Madonna means on an individual level.
