Executive Summary

The Open Badge Network (OBN) is a 3-year-long Erasmus + project (September 2015 – August 2017) which brings together organisations from across Europe to support the development of an Open Badge ecosystem, promoting the use of Open Badges to recognise non-formal and informal learning.

During the lifetime of the OBN project the Network is maintained and promoted by the project partners and funded from the support received from the European Commission. As in the case of all projects the sustainability of the developments beyond the lifetime of the project is an issue that has to be cared for. It is the aim of the project consortium to keep up the Network following Aug 2017 and prepare for its self-sustainability.

This document is a specification of the Open Badge Network Portal, which is the Intellectual Output O6-A3 of the Open Badge Network Erasmus+ Project.

 The content structure of the Open Badge Network Portal includes the following elements:

• Welcome page translated into 14 languages thanks to the contributions of the OBN

partners and members

• Inventory of Open Badge Projects (interactive map)

• OBN Mission and Charter

• Information about OBN partner organisations

• Information about OBN team members

• Contact information

• Project information including founding

• News with blog posts by OBN partners and members

• Events with a calendar of events related to Open Badges

• Gallery with pictures from the OBN project

• A collection of resources related to Open Badges (divided into publications, tools,

videos and issuer platforms)

• Outputs with all outputs published under CC licences

• OBN registration page

• MOOC resources incl. webinar recordings

• Twitter stream with all Tweets with the hashtag #OpenBadges

The key seven menu tabs on the Open Badge Network Portal are: (1) Welcome, (2) About

us, (3) News & Events, (4) Resources, (5) Outputs, (6) Join us, and (7) MOOC. These tabs

are visible from the home page and all following subpages enabling a user-friendly and

consistent navigation on the OBN portal. The screenshot below shows the content

structure with the key seven tabs on the homepage of the OBN portal.

1.1 Welcome

The welcome page is a description of the Open Badge Network project and includes liks to

the Inventory of Open Badge Projects, to Open Badge Network Charter and to the OBN

community registration. This page was translated into 14 languages thanks to the

contributions of the OBN partners and members. The 14 language versions can be accessed

by using the dropdown menu from the main menu under “Welcome” in the top navigation

bar.

1.2 About us

The About us page includes the following information related to the project and the

project partners: (1) Mission and Charter, (2) Partner organisations, (3) Team members, (4)

Contact info, and (5) Project information. These five subpages can be accessed from the

top menu bar in “About us”.

1.3 News & Events

The News & Events page includes the following categories: (1) News, (2) Events, and (3)

Gallery. The news section includes blog postings from Open Badge Network Community

members including project partners. The screenshot below illustrates an example of a

blog posting in the news section. The events section is a calendar with events related to

Open Badges. The gallery section includes pictures from the Open Badge Network project.

1.4 Resources

The OBN portal includes a wide range of resources dedicated to Open Badges in the menu

section “Resources”. This section is divided into four subsections: (1) Open Badges

Publications, (2) Open Badges Tools, (3) Open Badges Videos, and (4) Open Badges Issuers.

The screenshot below illustrates examples of Open Badges Publications in this section.

1.5 OBN Outputs

The Outputs section is divided into seven subsections for each of the seven Outputs. In

each Output subpage the partner organisations leading the given output and the

intellectual outputs themselves are listed according to the numbering O1-A1, O1-A2 etc.

The title of each outputs is an interactive link leading the the published output, mostly in

the PDF/Word format. The screenshot below illustrates an example of the Output section

with the Twitter stream on the right hand-side.

2. Technology

The Open Badges Network portal was designed using WordPress, BuddyPress, LearnPress

and a number of widgets and plug-ins. The site is powered by WordPress 4.8.1 Content

Management System with a modified Evolve 3.5.0 Theme4Press. The MOOC was created

and served by LearnPress 2.1.8.1 LMS plugin. The website functionality was enhanced by

several plugins. E.g. the OBM Membership was served by BuddyPress 2.9.1 and the forum

by BuddyPress 2.5.14.

3. Design elements

The OBN portal includes the following design elements:

C. Interactive map transferring to the Badge the World web page
