DECLARACIÓN DE MISIÓN DE OLQP La parroquia de la iglesia católica Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz se dedica a dar testimonio de las enseñanzas de Jesucristo, especialmente el Evan-gelio de San Mateo, Capítulo 25:21-46. Nuestra misión es nutrir el espíritu y alentar el potencial de aquellos a quienes servimos a través de la cele-bración litúrgica, labores educativas y ministerios sociales. La parroquia continuará identificándose con su origen como una comunidad afro-americana, pero reflejando una congregación multi-étnica y continuará promoviendo la armonía racial y la justicia social. Si bien es cierto que nuestro enfoque principal es la vecindad comunitaria, con-tinuaremos trabajando para proveer por el bienes-tar de los más necesitados en general. OLQP MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church is dedi-cated to witnessing the teachings of Jesus Christ, especially the Gospel of Saint Matthew, Chapter 25:31-46. Our mission is to nurture the spirit and to encourage the potential of those we serve through liturgical celebration, educational endeavors and social ministries. The parish will continue to identi-fy with its origin as a Black parish. As a multi-ethnic congregation we will seek to promote racial har-mony and social justice. While our primary focus is within the immediate community, we will also work to provide for the well-being of the down-trodden everywhere. UPDATE: MEDOR’S AGRO-FORESTRY PROGRAM

In rural Haiti it is common for groups of people to join together for work parties, called kombits, when large-scale tasks need to be completed. During the first six months of this year Medor residents completed 50 kom-bits as part of the parish’s agro-forestry program. Some of the kombits rehabilitated the tree nurseries, planting and watering tree seeds; some transplanted the seedlings on the hillsides; some helped individual farmers with their farming tasks; and some sorted and treated crop seeds at the seed banks. The kombits are different during this time frame because of COVID-19. People meet in smaller groups and try to remain socially distant. Even during a pandemic the peo-ple of Medor embody the Haitian proverb, “Men anpil, chay pa lou”. (Many hands make the load lighter.)

MASS FOR MARRIAGE JUBILARIANS

Celebrating a Silver or Golden Wedding Anniversary

The Mass for those celebrating 25 and 50 years of mar-riage (married in 1970 and 1995) will be held at the Cathe-dral of St. Thomas More in Arlington on Sunday, October 4, at 2:30pm. Bishop Michael Burbidge will be the princi-pal celebrant and homilist. A light reception of cake and punch with an opportunity for a photograph with Bishop Burbidge will follow in Burke Hall. Please register through your parish no later than September 18 by contacting Jeannette, jgantzdaly@olqpva.org or 703-979-5580. Reg-ister even if you cannot attend and the Office of Marriage, Family and Respect Life will send you a certificate com-memorating your 25 or 50 years of marriage.

RESPONDING TO RACISM: UNDERSTANDING, CONVERSION, ACTION will be presented by Catholic

Charities of the Diocese of Arlington with Bishop Michael F. Burbidge and Rev. Scott Woods, a priest of the Archdio-cese of Washington, at The Church of the Nativity, Burke, on Tuesday, August 25 at 7pm. The event, co-sponsored by the diocesan Peace and Justice Commission and the Office of Multicultural Ministries, is open with limited seating for 100 people who register to attend in person. Safe distancing will be practiced and masks or face cover-ings are required. Hand sanitizer will be available upon arrival and departure. ACTUALIZACIÓN: EL PROGRAMA AGROFORESTAL DE MEDOR

En las áreas rurales de Haití grupos de personas acostumbran a unirse para formar grupos de trabajo, llamados kombits, cuando hay que completar tareas a gran escala. Durante los primeros seis meses de este año los residentes de Medor completaron 50 kombits como par-te del programa agroforestal de la parroquia. Algunos de los kombits rehabilitaron los viveros de árboles, sembraron y regaron las semillas de los árboles. Algunos grupos trasplantaron las plantitas en las lade-ras, otros ayudaron a agricultores con sus tareas agrícolas y otros clasificaron y le dieron un tratamiento a semillas para la cosecha en el banco de semillas. Los kombits son diferentes ahora debido al COVID-19. Las personas se reúnen en grupos más pequeños y tratan de mantener la distancia social. VOCATIONAL RETREAT FOR HISPANIC

YOUNG MEN SEPTEMBER 4-6 Fr. Mauricio Pineda and the Office of Vocations will hold a

vocational discernment retreat in Spanish for Hispanic

young men ages 18-30. The retreat begins Friday, Septem-

ber 4, at 7pm and concludes Sunday, September 6, at

11am. Cost is $60, financial aid is available. Deadline to

OLQP ANNUAL SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE

(Please see list below of needed donations.) Please help us with this OLQP tradition. While the pandem-

ic means Arlington and Alexandria schools are starting

school online, at least initially, children still need supplies.

This is especially important for those families who may

have lost a job or face eviction. This year, we will provide a

bag of supplies including some pandemic related items,

but not backpacks. You can help in 3 ways--donate money

through the link on the parish website, buy supplies and

drop off or ship to OLQP, or make child or adult size

masks. If you would like the links or have any questions,

75TH ANNIVERSARY PARISH DIRECTORY UPDATE

We continue working with LifeTouch to publish the parish directory. Even though LifeTouch has closed their publica-tion operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been able to finalize the parish directory and put it into the queue for printing. While there is currently no estimate from LifeTouch regarding when their operations will reo-pen, once they do, the directory will be printed and deliv-ered. You now have the option of choosing the date and time you would like to attend public Mass. You also have the option of cancelling or rescheduling should something come up. Sign up now to attend one of the August public weekend Masses or call the parish office to have a staff member sign you up, 703-979-5580. We are now using a ticketing program (tickets are free) that allows for greater user flexibility for you and much less management by the parish office. When a Mass option is full, it will be greyed-out. JUST A THOUGHT, OR TWO….Today’s readings overturn our

presumptions about the relationships between “insiders” and “outsiders”. From the Prophet Isaiah to Psalm 67, from Paul’s letter to the Romans to the Gospel of Matthew….we are treated to God’s vision of who is “in” and who is “out”. Some of us may feel a bit disconcerted by what we encounter in today’s readings. It seems there is something innately human about drawing boundaries between those who are like us and those who are different…”insiders and outsiders”. Down through the centuries wars have been fought, nations destroyed and societies pulled apart in efforts to protect social boundaries that delineate who are the insiders and who are the outsiders. Slavery would be a perfect example of a social construct that delineated between peoples and that destroyed individual human lives, families and entire nations! All based on social constructs of what made a human life matter and be of value.

Today’s readings call on us to reflect on our own social constructs…who we treat as insiders and who we treat as outsiders…whose lives we believe matter and whose lives we believe don’t matter! What scripture makes clear is that we are called by God to work to eradicate all social structures and atti-tudes that exclude and marginalize “the other”. In today’s Gospel we see that even Jesus is challenged by the Canaanite woman to “revision his mission,” and to proclaim the Reign of God so that it

goes beyond the People of Israel and includes absolutely everyone! Because each one is a child of God and, yes, even the Canaanites are included! There is no place for racism or bigotry or xenophobia or misogyny in the Reign of God because we are all God’s children -- and racism, bigotry, anti-Semitism, xenophobia, homophobia and misogyny are all sins against the Reign of God! Everyone is invited and as St. Paul reminds us “the gifts and the call are irrevocable”! The Word has gone out…all are invited to be part of the Reign of God…and the Word of God once spoken can-not be called back!

I believe that all of us who call ourselves Christians do well to reflect on all of this in light of the racism, bigotry, anti-Semitism and outright hatred displayed in the violence in what we saw three years ago in Charlottesville and the violence we have seen today against the Black Lives Matter protesters, protesting for racial justice, perpetrated by our very own government. We have to ask ourselves: Are there people I exclude?...How could I be more inclusive in my life? What socio-political and religious struc-tures does the Gospel call me to work to change to be more inclu-sive so that no one is left out? In order to more faithfully follow the call of Jesus Christ what idols to slavery, exclusion, hatred, marginalization and war do I need to work to pull down in my life?...In this nation?...In the world? We will have 1,000 postcards to divide among OLQP households. Let's do what we can to combat the sin of voter suppression and ensure a peaceful and fair election. ATTENTION JUSTICE ADVOCATES: During the Virginia

2020 General Assembly (January — March) the Virginia In-

terfaith Center for Public Policy (VICPP) advocated to require

employers with 25 employees to ensure a PAID SICK DAY

policy granting workers 5 paid sick days per year (more than

600,000 full time workers in VA do NOT have this bene-

fit!) The measure failed. VICPP views paid sick days as a

moral, public health, and economic justice issue which

affects all of us in the Commonwealth.

On August 18, the General Assembly will reconvene to com-

plete unfinished business from the regular session. Justice

advocates have another opportunity to finish the job to pro-

vide workers in Virginia with paid sick time.

A special COVID-19 specific benefit of 80 hours (2 weeks) of

paid sick time for workers to use during the pandemic to

quarantine themselves or a family member with COVID-19,

plus a “regular” paid sick day standard to provide 5 paid sick

days (40 hours) each year is proposed. The COVID-19 benefit

would apply to all full-time and part-time private and public

sector workers. The regular standard would apply only to

full-time (32 or more hours per week) workers for now.

You’re invited to join the

OLQP Labor Team “Good Trouble”

POSTCARD PARTY To Fight Voter Suppression in the

2020 ELECTION!

John Lewis observed that the vote “is the most powerful non-violent tool we have.” And yet we see wide-spread voter suppression efforts targeted at Black communities such as strict voter ID laws and strategic closing of polling places leading to incredibly long lines. That is wrong. That undermines their sacred votes and democracy. So we must follow John Lewis’ example to protect the vote because, as he said, “[w]hen you see something that is not right, not just, not fair, you have a moral obligation to say some-thing. To do something. Our children and their children will ask us, ‘What did you do? What did you say?’” The good news is that we can act together as a parish to stand up against voter suppression in the upcoming election. The Labor Team has been working with the Arlington NAACP and its partner in these elections, Reclaim Our Vote, and will have 1,000 postcards to distribute among OLQP households who wish to join our “postcard party.” Here are the details:

• Each household (not person) will be able to get a total of 25 postcards. That number may be reduced if we get overwhelming demand at the parish and need to share the postcards more broadly

• You must request the postcards by emailing Sally Diaz Wells at sdiazwells@olqpva.org before Monday, August

24th, noting your household last name(s). No need to specify a postcard total – every package will have up to 25.

• The postcards will be through Reclaim Our Vote, a 501(c)(3) organization that partners with the NAACP and other groups to reach voters in states with a long history of voter suppression. Our postcards will be targeted to unregis-tered South Carolina residents, urging them to vote.

• Your package will be left for pick-up at the parish office -- look for the “postcard party” box -- on the porch to the parish office from 10am-3pm on Thursday August 27th – Sunday August 30th. It will contain blank postcards, names and addresses of where to send each postcard, a reminder of the deadline for completing them, and a script you must follow when addressing the postcard. However, feel free to add your own creative flair - maybe a little color and artwork. If you have children, feel free to involve them too!

• Because of tight deadlines for registering to vote and delays with USPS, you must either mail the postcard (with postage) yourself by September 6th or return your completed postcards from 10am-6pm the weekend of Septem-ber 5th and 6th to the box in the back of the OLQP parking lot, by the statue of Mary (or to the box inside the minis-try center if after 5pm on those days or it is raining). OLQP will provide stamps for any postcards returned to the parish for mailing.

• If you choose to return the completed postcards to the box at OLQP on the weekend of September 5 and 6 in lieu of mailing them from your home, we ask you to wear a mask, observe social distancing, and before you leave, to con-sider taking a moment to sit on the bench beside the statue of Mary to join your personal prayer with the parish’s to pray for: the people we are contacting by mail, an end to voter suppression, widespread voter participation, a peace-ful, safe, free, and fair election, and an election outcome that uplifts the people in our country during this hard time, especially the least among us.

Words to encourage and guide,

wherever you find yourself during this pandemic

If you're about to start ninth grade:

Congratulations on a job well done, finishing eighth grade during a pandemic. Now that high school is here and everything for your generation is changing, continue to grow in empathy and connect with a new person each week. Making memories starts with taking risks, putting yourself out there and including those left be-hind in what's going on.

If you're about to start 12th grade:

Your last year of high school will not be like you dreamed, with all our traditional milestones. But be pa-tient. Your final year of high school will still be filled with the anxiety of completing college applications, the dis-comfort of waiting so long for their approval/disapproval and meeting new friends (albeit via Zoom or some other online platform).

Have patience for your teachers and administrators as they figure out what is best for your school with this su-per contagious virus on the loose. Take initiative to con-tribute to the conversations at your school. After all, your generation's call is to transform this world beyond even what many of us adults even think is possible.

If you're about to start your first year of college:

We are sorry you are guinea pigs in this human drama while we are still waiting on an effective treatment and vaccine for this vicious virus we have learned to call COVID-19. Forgive your parents for all their protective-ness. This quick-spreading disease is rampant, and we have yet to know what real lifelong effects it has for all of our lives. Take calculated risks and live a life of integ-rity where your actions and your experiments with the truth always keep other human beings at the front and center.

If you're about to start your last year of college:

Take heart and finish strong. The world needs you. Con-tinue to be curious about how others participate on your campus and connect with people who may have

different perspectives from your own. I realize there may be great anxiety with a crashing global market just as you are ready to fully contribute to our society.

This may actually be God's gift to you: Discover what brings you great joy and meets people's needs as they are so desperate for the world to "get back to normal." The sooner you embrace the fact that the world will not return to its former self, the better off you are to get a sense of the kind of education, friendships and network-ing you need to build in this last year in order to stay awake and conscientious of the world's needs.

If you're about to start a new job:

Good for you! Now listen. Go out of your way to listen to others. Don't just go to a meeting; reach out to one other person and ask what advice they might offer you as you begin in your role. Learn about your rights. Learn about your benefits. Save money now while you are not tempted to buy experiences (big concerts and trips). Read up on your investments and talk about your financ-es with someone else. You can rebuild our economy by first understanding that all bodies need health care, not just the human bodies that just-so-happen to have full-time employment.

If you are inspired and encouraged by the latest fight for racial justice:

Continue to take courage to face the real pain and suffering our communities have experienced through sanctioned, state-sponsored laws, practices and policies and enforcement. Study all of our histories each day but try to avoid being swayed by the glamor of the latest and greatest meme or post. Be like a pebble thrown into water — travel deeper and deeper, listening to the peo-ple most impacted by the ways you live. Have patience with yourself and others. Demand truthful witness. "Act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God" (Micah 6:8).

If you are emboldened by our continuing sexual abuse scandal:

Listen to victim and survivor testimonies. Demand the removal of perpetrators and the recreation of a system

of leadership that is not patriarchal, patronizing, dualis-tic and private.

If you are participating in and/or tired of livestreamed church:

Pray every day with a newspaper in one hand and the Bible in another. Add a journal to the mix and write your prayers — requests, desires, lamentations, joys, con-cerns, sorrow — in it. Read the previous days prayers as you begin each day.

If you're just home Zooming:

Have a set of notecards ready. Take a break to write a brief note of gratitude to someone you were in a Zoom conference call with.

If you're just home Zooming alone:

Take a break. Be sure to shower and put on a fresh set of clothes. Take a walk, even if it's just around the block. Notice the sounds in your neighborhood. Notice what is blooming and what needs renewal.

If you're just home Zooming with school-age chil-dren:

Be gentle on yourself and be gentle with them. Prioritize connection when planning to share space, share a schedule and share an experience where not many have control. Know that who you are is enough even when you don't feel like you are doing well as a parent or as a co-worker. Remember that may be the precise moment that God's brilliance breaks through to show you a more illumined way.

If you're just home Zooming with older parents you care for:

Learn to play a game with one another or teach them how to connect with their old friends via Facebook. Be patient. Be present. Tend to their souls as much as pro-vide for their daily physical needs.

If you're just home:

Breathe and allow the Spirit to live in you and through you in your space.
