O Venezia (Part 2: Waters Richer than Glass)
O, Venezia[from Richard Wagner: Mein Leben(München: List Verlag, 1963), 671]
O, Venice[from Richard Wagner: My Life (London:Constable, 1963), 697]
On a sleepless night that drove me out onthe balcony of my apartment at aboutthree o’clock in the morning, I heard forthe first time the famous old folksong ofthe gondolieri.
I thought the first call, piercing thestillness of the night like a harsh lament, emanated from the Rialto, barely a quarterhour’s distance away, or thereabouts;from a similar distance this would beanswered from another quarter in thesame way.
In oft längeren Pausen widerholte sichdieser merkwürdig melancholische Dialog, welcher mich zu sehr ergriff, als daß ichse ine jedenfal ls sehr einfachenmusikalischen Bestandteile in meinemGedächtnis hätte fixieren können.. . . . .
This strange melancholy dialogue, whichwas repeated frequently at longishintervals, moved me too much for me tobe able to fix its musical components inmy mind.. . . . .
When I was riding back late one eveningalong the dark canal, the moon came outand illuminated, together with theindescribable palaces, the tall sillhouetteof my gondolier towering above the sternof the gondola, while he slowly turned hismighty oar.
Suddenly from his breast came amournful sound [not unlike the howl of awild animal,] swelling up from a deep, lownote, and after a long-sustained `Oh’, itculminated in the simple musical phrase“Venezia”.
This was followed by some words which Icould not retain in memory, being sogreatly shaken by the emotion of themoment.
