ovember Issue President’s Corner Our October meeting was well attended and well received. The two candidates for Douglas County Sheriff, Dave Brady and Ron Pierini, responded to some very difficult question posed by the SNRW Board, and then took questions from the floor. They each did an excellent job in outlining their thoughts for the future of the Sheriff’s Office. Thank you, Sharla, for putting this wonderful pro- gram together. As you can see on page 5, October and November will be very busy months. In addition to what is listed there, please consider attending the NvFRW Dinner honoring and thanking Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki for his years of service to the State of Nevada. This will be held November 21 at the Atlantas Hotel Casino in Reno. For information and registration go to www.nvfrw.org. The Douglas County Republican Central Committee will be entering a float in the Nevada Day Parade (November 1st) and are looking for decorators, riders and walkers. Please contact Sue Kyle at [email protected] if you are interested in helping. It should be loads of fun. Of course, the most import day coming up is Election Day, November 2nd. Please vote, and get every republican you know out to vote. We have some wonderful Republican candidates and they certainly need our support. Speaking of support, I am proud to tell you that SNRW distributed approximately $7,000 to our candidates in critical races in the State. And, speaking of voting, at the last SNRW meeting our Nominating Chair, Donna Schehl, presented a slate of officers to be voted on at the November meeting. The slate presented was: Corresponding Secretary, Sharon O’Berg; Recording Secretary, Jerri Bollinger; Treasurer, Linda Davis; Second Vice President (Membership), Nancy Brisack; First Vice President (Program), Barbara McRoberts. You will notice there is no nominee for President. The Nominating Committee has worked very hard trying to fill this position but to no avail. So I appeal to you, please consider running for this office. It really isn’t all that hard, and you will have a wonderful Board to back you up and be your safety net. Plus, it puts you in the position to be a Past President—the best job ever. Remember: Vote! I hope you have a fun-filled Halloween and a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. Recommended Reading

Nevada: A History, by Robert Laxalt, University of Nevada Press, is a splendid book and

deserves to be recommended. Many of you may have read it already. The book came to

mind while reviewing the list of candidates who had filed to run for office in our state.

Adam Laxalt, the Republican candidate for Attorney General, is the grand-nephew of

Robert Laxalt. You may have met Adam Laxalt at our recent Douglas County Lincoln-

Reagan Dinner or our 9/11 Dinner.

Robert Laxalt crafted a narrative history in his book that received international acclaim.

He describes the Nevada in which he was raised, where he had exposure to “ . . .the di-

verse facets of its makeup—from range life to mining towns to the gambling scene and to

politics . . .” The author blends his entertaining yet succinct writing style with “liberal use

of the language of the people.”

The first edition of Nevada: A History was Robert Laxalt’s contribution to a series of

books written to observe our nation’s bicentennial. As we celebrate Nevada’s sesquicen-

tennial, the second edition, published in 1991, is or should be required high school read-

ing material. It would make a very nice gift for a child or grandchild.

Your reading recommendations are very much appreciated. Please give them to your

Constitution Committee and we will pass them along.

RECOMMEDED READIG

***************

The Constitution Committee does a great job in providing recommendations for

fascinating books. If you have read a book recently that you think would be of interest to

our membership, please let Mary Porter know.
