Courses at Sheffield are known as modules.Modules are made up of regularly scheduledclass sessions of one or more hours per weekduring the semester. Depending on the subjectarea, these may include lectures, seminars, tutorials and labs.

• You will take modules alongside British andinternational students on full degreeprogrammes at Sheffield.

• British degrees are structured so thatstudents declare their major from thebeginning and study that subject for theduration of their degree. Students move uplevels of courses to complete their degree.

• Students on these courses already have anin-depth knowledge of their degree subjectand will often have studied the subject athigh school too.

• Study Abroad students usually take modulesoffered at level 100 only. This level best suitsstudents studying a subject for the first time.

• If you have completed more advancedclasses at your home institution in anappropriate department, you may be allowedto take level 200 and/or 300 (3rd-year)modules.

• Don’t assume a direct correlation betweenthe 100, 200, and 300 levels used at Sheffield, and the course numbering system at yourhome institution.

• Study Abroad students can only takeundergraduate modules offered by thedepartments listed opposite.

Credit values andworkloadMost individual modules are worth 10or 20 Sheffield credits. Theundergraduate workload for oneacademic year of a Sheffield degreecourse is 120 credits, or 60 for onesemester. You should therefore choosea group of modules that add up to theappropriate number of credits for yourperiod of study abroad.

Under special circumstances and withthe written approval of your homeinstitution, it may be possible toregister for fewer credits. Theminimum allowed is 100 Sheffieldcredits over a full academic year or 40Sheffield credits for a semester.

Choosing your modulesYou may choose modules across asmany departments as you wish, as longas you can fit them into your timetable, and you have the required academicbackground for each module.

When you apply, you will choosemodules that are required for yourmajor (main) area of study, and othersin non-major areas. By this we mean theones you must take (major) at Sheffieldand the ones you would like to take(non major) and that are flexible.

We can confirm in advance whetheryou have been accepted on the majormodules you have chosen. Your non-major choices are passed on to therelevant departments, and you candiscuss your requirements withacademic advisers during registration.
