How to order

ASHUTOSH

O-Rings

03

Prior to 1940 natural rubber was used as a

sealing material. Because of its tendency to

deteriorate under extreme temperature or

when used in conjunction with several industrial

fluids, natural rubber was only moderately

successful.

With the advent of World War II came the

urgent need for sealing compounds that were

compatible with exotic alloys, gases and fluids,

under extreme temperatures and pressures.

Synthetic elastomers came into being and

application for O-Rings quickly expanded from

armament into new and various industrial

applications.

Ashutosh is proud of its reputation as the home

of the large seletion of “TOOL READY” O-Rings.

Ashutosh's exclusive “Flash Free” molding

process is your assurance of exactnesss for the

most demanding specifications.

Formulations for specific requirements are your

assurance of compounding excellence in O-

Rings by Ashutosh, reflected in the wide

selection of materials listed as standards.

ASHUTOSH Keeps Pace with Progress O-Rings size is defined by inside diameter and width

(cross selection).

For prompt, accurate delivery determine the I.D.

(Inside diameter) and W (width) or cross-section is

required along with hardness and material.

Factors toconsider inselection

O-Ring materials

04

1. Is sealing to be static or dynamic ?

Static : Where the two parts of the gland do not move relative

to each other such as a pipe flange, face seal, cap and plug

seal, etc. Clearances can be essentially zero, permitting

sealing of very high pressure.

Dynamic: Where there is relative motion between the parts

of the gland such as'a reciprocating rod or piston seal.

2. What pressure is to be contained?

The principal difference between members of the same

elastomer material is the hardness as measured by the Shore

A hardness meter, the higher the hardness, the harder the

material. Softer O-Rings (25 to 60 hardness) are generally

specified for low pressure and low friction applications.

Hardnesses of 80° to 90° are specified for resistance to high

pressures or to abrasion. Available hardnesses for each of

the standard materials is shown in subsequent pages. For

extremes in pressures or other rigorous applications, contact

us.

3. What fluid or gas is to be sealed?

(or will the O-Ring have some other use?)

The uniformity and high quality of O-Rings are attested to in

their wide range of applications, not only as a seal for fluids

(such as oils, chemicals and gases of all types) but also as

holding devices, valve seats and drive belts .

Recommendations based on properties most suitable for

practically any requirement are included in the description of

the compounds.

4. Cost ?

Cost of material and O -Rings is often considered where

economy is a factor. In relative order from the lowest current

processing costs are : (1) Nitrile, (2) EPDM, (3) Neoprene, (4)

Silicone, (5) XNBR, (6) HNBR, (7) Fluorocarbon (Viton), (8)

Fluorosilicon. There are however, many variables in

manufacturing and molding processes that will dictate final

costs.

Factors in Seal Application

Friction shortens seal life

Harder rubber compounds produce more seal running

friction. Colder operating temperatures and high pressures

also produce increased friction. Surface finishes, length of

rubbing surface and frequency of cycle are other factors to

consider. On devices that operate only occasionally or

intermittently, "breakway" friction may result.

Lubrication

Sealing surfaces must be smooth enough to minimize

abrasion yet porous enough to retain lubrication. Surface

finishes of 16 to 20 RMS are recommended.

Care in installation

Eliminate burrs, scratches and nicks from surfaces the seal

will pass over. Stretch of the O-Ring should not exceed 100%.

Do not slide the seal over a threaded area. Avoid excessive

twisting.

Width (cross section)

Generally, larger widths are assumed to wear longer and

often are used to compensate for wide hardness clearances.

Variables such as travel and cycle frequency must be

considered in selecting widths.

Stretch

ln order to avoid premature failure due to excessive stress,

stretch should not exceed 15% in application.

Seal extrusion

Extrusion, caused by constant high pressure or pulsating

pressure extremes, is a common cause for failure. The

amount of clearance between adjacent surfaces should not

exceed recommended limits and should be dictated by the

hardness of the rubber compound.

Hardness Vs. Pressure

Every rubber compound has its own reaction to pressure.

Maximum "working" distortion of each is reached at a

specific pressure, generally several hundred pounds under

extrusion pressure. The use of two or more O-Rings in the

same groove is not normally recommended. In order to

avoid extrusion, failure the use of backup rings may be

required for pressures exceeding 1500 p.s.i. However,

hardness and tighter clearances should be considered first.
