Although the worldwide celebration of Beethoven 250 has been affected by the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, the interest with this important anniversary has not diminished.

Many Beethoven concerts have been cancelled, but some performances did go as planned. For example, our concert line-up includes a recording made this May with Thomas Zehetmair joining the NDR Radio Philharmonic Orchestra in Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. In addition, two historic concerts bring you back to the year 1970. The first has the one and only Arturo Michelangeli playing Beethoven’s last piano sonata, and the second one features a rarely heard Beethoven cantata performed by various artists including the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra. For a taste of a “historically informed performance” of Beethoven’s Third and Fifth symphonies, you may tune in to a concert given by Le Concert des Nations. The special timbres of

The Marriage of Figaro was the first fruit of the extremely successful collaboration between the

23 August: Catalani's La WallyAlfredo Catalani (1854-1893) belonged to the same generation as Puccini and Mascagni. He was one of the leaders of the Giovane Scuola (Young School) of Italian composers who advocated a

melody and orchestral colours, he unfortunately died before reaching the age of 40, and was thus

La Wallyfrom a popular German novel by Wilhelmine von Hillern. The story is set in the Tyrolean Alps of Austria, where the free-spirited but vulnerable village girl Wally is in love with the handsome

Set to an English text by the composer herself based on a French play by Henry Brewster, The Wreckers tells the story about a village on the cliffs of Cornwall, whose starving inhabitants rely on shipwrecks on the rocks below to bring them food for their survival. When a storm approaches, they would deliberately extinguish the lamp of the lighthouse to lure ships to their doom. But there is one among them who despises their act and lights up warning beacons to lead the ships away to safety. The angry villagers gang up to hunt down their traitor.

The Wreckersenthusiastically praised by such distinguished musicians as Gustav Mahler and Bruno Walter and championed by Sir Thomas Beecham who conducted its British premiere. The opera is presented on this occasion in a recording performed by Judith Howarth, soprano and Ann-Marie Owens, mezzo-soprano; Justin Lavender, tenor and Peter Sidhom, baritone; together with the

詞，始於中唐而興於晚唐五代，及至北宋，業已粲然大備。另一方面，宋人與唐人一樣，喜愛寫詩，

但他們對於這種韻文體的態度，與唐人截然有別，他們愛在詩裡說理，而所謂理，斷不是盛行宋代

的理學，而是指一般事物的道理。宋人寫詩，除了說理，喜以散文入詩。如此一來，宋詩不但說理，

而且失卻詩應有的文字張力，以致讀之無味。

東坡詞除了有「大江東去」的豪情，還有「十年生死兩茫茫」的懷念、「千里共嬋娟」的期許、「黃樓夜景，

為余浩嘆」的唏噓，以及諸如下述的淡淡哀愁：

宋人抒情遣懷，不託於詩，而假於詞。因此，宋詞極盡典雅婉委，情真意摯之能事。若論詞中能手，蘇大才子固然可以奉為圭臬。不論是那

個類，諸如抒懷言志、分離送別、情愛友誼、故鄉情懷，都留有不少千古頌揚的佳作。不過，芸芸詞作中，上述【念奴嬌】極為破格。文

人填詞，為了表述細膩之情，所用物象，定必細小微型而從不大開大闔，反觀這闋【念奴嬌】，劈頭第一句竟然是「大江東去」，一反小江、

小河、小溪、小水的常見寫法。「大江東去」這種氣勢，等若杜甫「登高」那種「不盡長江滾滾來」的格局，而隨後的「亂石崩雲，驚濤裂岸」，

更不待言。扼要來說，蘇軾在這闋詞所抒發的，不是男女之間細膩或濃艷之情，而是男人懷抱天下的豪情。在詞的領域，這對是偏鋒之作，

亦為這個韻文體開闢疆界。

貝多芬三十二首鋼琴奏鳴曲之中，作品 14，第一首的 E 大調奏鳴曲不特別難彈，又沒有別名，所以並不顯眼，但唯獨這首樂曲曾由貝多芬

親自改編成弦樂四重奏。看看原譜，樂曲有些地方，例如第一樂章的開頭，很自然就想像成四重奏。

要將它改編成四重奏卻不是「搬字過紙」那麼簡單。貝多芬一直認為這樣的改編很不容易，要非常謹慎；不過後人改編他的作品，他就

管不了。李斯特將他的交響曲寫成鋼琴獨奏，華格納亦將第九交響曲改編給鋼琴與聲樂。

本月，我們就來比較一下貝多芬的原作和改編版本，看看改編者所花的心思。

貝多芬喜愛漫步郊野叢林，從大自然取得創作靈感。

背景：貝多芬自幼展露音樂天賦，之後不斷努力學習，逐漸得

到貴族賞識。可是在事業起飛之際，耳疾卻悄然來襲，令他飽受

煎熬。雖然如此，他卻沒有因此停下步伐，反而一直創下高峰。

縱觀他的一生，究竟他如何承受命運帶來的煎熬？本月，音樂神

探會一連五集研究貝多芬九首交響曲其中五首，一起窺探他的內

心世界！

「八一八」貝多芬！性格古怪？

貝多芬頭髮凌亂、人際關係不太好、輕微酗酒、欠缺耐性、脾氣暴

躁。不過，經常發白日夢的他卻寫下多首充滿幻想色彩的樂曲！

不是作曲家？

貝多芬年輕時以鋼琴家的身份到維也納，於貴族大廳及宮廷演奏。

他亦有創作樂曲及親自演出。

女朋友？

貝多芬終身未婚，但據說他曾兩度墮入愛河，更為其中的茱麗葉塔

譜寫了著名的「月光」奏鳴曲！

曾經自殺？

貝多芬在「海利根施塔特遺書」(Heiligenstädter Testament) 中提及，因耳疾及其他問題想過要結束生命，不過最後音樂拯救了他！

貝多芬的祖父路德維希‧范‧貝多芬（1712- 1773）和父親

約翰‧范‧貝多芬（1739/1740-1792）

祖籍荷蘭平民後裔貝多芬（Ludwig van Beethoven 1770 –1827）生於德國波恩。當時的德奧地區，貴族後裔的名字會加上「von」，而貝多芬名字中的「van」每每引人遐想：「他是貴族的後代嗎？」實情是貝多芬祖籍荷蘭，「van」其實是荷蘭人名中常見的姓氏前綴，與德系的「von」無關，也

沒有貴族封姓的含意。

祖父備受尊重貝多芬的音樂天份，相信是來自祖父。他與祖父（Lodewijk van Beethoven 1712–1773）同名，都叫路德維希，但前者名字是德文拼寫「Ludwig」，後者多用荷蘭文拼寫「Lodewijk」。老貝多芬生於當時的荷蘭領土，即今日位於比利時境內的美麗古城梅赫倫（Mechelen）。他因擁有一副出色的聲線而備受賞識，在二十一歲移居波恩，受聘為宮廷樂師後就在該城定居，之後更升任成為宮廷樂長。老貝多芬在孫

兒三歲時撒手人寰，但慈祥和備受尊重的形象早已植根孫兒心靈。這方面可從貝多芬的生活細節窺見：貝多芬一生經常搬家，無論搬到何處，

總會在居所中找個好地方，掛上祖父的肖像。

父親酗酒成性貝多芬的父親約翰（Johann van Beethoven 1739 /1740–1792）曾受僱成為波恩的宮廷歌手，懂得演奏多樣樂器，是城中頗受歡迎的鋼琴教師。他發現兒子的過人天賦後，定意悉心栽培，甚至強迫他日以繼夜地練習，務求造就出一個能與莫扎特比肩的音樂神童。小貝多芬在

1778 年首次公開演出，當時他已經七歲，但音樂會的宣傳指他只有六歲，這正是莫扎特首次演出的歲數。有說貝多芬長大後對自己的年齡

和生日充滿疑惑，相信幼時被「篤數」的經歷是一大原因。

貝多芬很會理財，這也許和少年經歷有關。父親約翰酗酒成性，當妻子在1787年因病離世後更變本加厲，引致事業盡。

這一年，貝多芬才十八歲。身為三兄弟中的老大，貝多芬唯有代替父親撐起家庭，在廷樂團中覓得中提琴手一職，一

做就五年，至 1792 年第二次離開家鄉波恩，再闖維也納為止。想不到離家一個月後，貝多芬的父親約翰的生命也走到

盡頭。

一個人即使如何獨立，也總有家庭的牽絆，強勢如樂聖貝多芬也無例外。

他二十出頭已離開家鄉波恩往維也納發展，但成長的背景影響著貝多芬的

整段人生，就連姓氏、生日日期等亦引起樂迷的好奇心。

大學年代，練琴總沉迷德布西、希納斯特拿等近代作曲家的作品，感覺自己的手指頭能像調

色盤一般，透過五彩斑斕的音色，畫出一幅幅光影獨特的畫像。直到有一節課，老師把我的

樂譜闔起來，語重心長地說：「記得不能忘記練貝多芬和巴赫的作品，就像我們每天吃的米

飯一樣，是『正氣』的，多彈有益！」那天下課後，我終於打開久違了的貝多芬鋼琴奏鳴曲，

開始想像作曲家腦海裡的管弦樂音響效果，揣摩他熱情與深藏在背後的邏輯。直到音樂系琴

房裡的陽光漸漸暗淡，我才驚覺，原來已經跟樂譜獨處良久，也重新認識貝多芬這位我從小

就覺得是鼎鼎大名的人物。

如何聽懂貝多芬後來，我很幸運有機會去美國深造。當時我的鋼琴指導教授，恰巧在開學時出版了他的最新錄音《貝多芬：迪亞貝利變奏曲》。記得第一

次聽完後，心裡一直在吶喊：「聽不懂！好長！不想再聽！這不是我認識的貝多芬！」但好奇的我開始找尋樂譜和文獻，反覆播放著這首

變奏曲，發現原來要真正聽懂貝多芬，其實要去看莫扎特的歌劇、要去聽韓德爾的賦格曲、要去理解巴赫的對位法、要去感受德國傳統舞

蹈的律動等。因為貝多芬既有純粹的心靈，也有包羅萬象的創意，那是我再重新認識的貝多芬。

「最正宗」的貝多芬演奏？幾年後，我又很幸運考上鋼琴演奏的博士班。當時音樂學院裡最享負盛名的兩位鋼琴教授，分別是鋼琴家亞勞 (Claudio Arrau) 的得意門生

和鋼琴家舒爾健 (Rudolf Serkin) 的入室弟子，各自傳承著二十世紀最偉大的貝多芬演奏傳統。雖然後來只能集中跟一位教授學習，但還是

會經常在大師班或不同場合向另一位大師請益。就如彈奏同一首貝多芬的鋼琴曲，兩位老師的切入點、著重的地方，以及句法結構等都有

截然不同的詮釋，風格迥異，卻深刻美好。原來沒有所謂「最正宗」的貝多芬演奏，反而是心誠則靈。感謝他們，我不只又再重新認識貝

多芬，也彷彿對音樂，甚至藝術有了更深的體會。

適逢今年是貝多芬二百五十週年，8 月份五個星期日早上 10 時，我將為你介紹貝多芬的鋼琴曲、協奏曲、聲樂作品、室樂和交響樂，期待

我們能一起重新認識貝多芬。

首演，聯同香港城市室樂團，演奏占馬勞沙及李察‧史特勞斯的雙簧管協奏曲，呈獻其

Z.E.N. Piano Trio

Z.E.N.鋼琴三重奏鋼琴家左章、小提琴家柳愛莎和大提琴家哈特拿沙揚，分別來自中國、美國和亞美尼亞，卻同於2015年獲選為英國廣播公司

「新世代藝術家」。三位耀目的音樂新星因緣際會，發現彼此同樣熱愛室樂，於是創立Z.E .N .鋼琴三重奏（以各人名字的首個

英文字母為名）。2017年他們曾來港演出，送上海頓、布拉姆斯和德伏扎克經典的鋼琴三重奏。全情投入的室樂演奏，可在
