Dear Kingston Catholic Families,

My name is Sean Gallagher. I’m a local music educator and performer. This past

December I enjoyed working with some KCS students for the Holiday concert band

performance. Now I’ll be offering a children’s band at your school for students in the 4th

through 8th grades who have been studying an instrument for at least three months. (For

students interested in learning an instrument for the first time see below****) Practice for

band will begin Friday January 18, 2019, meeting each Friday from 3:00 to 4:00pm at the Wall

Street Campus. On First Friday’s band will meet at the Broadway Campus from 12:30-1:30pm.

The cost of Band is $250.00 from January through June. All or half the cost is due by

February 1st and the second payment, if you choose to break it up, is due April 1st. I will also

offer group lessons held right after band practice for any interested band members. These

lessons will be split into sections and there will be more individualized focus on each player.

Lesson fees are $200.00. This is approximately $10.00 per lesson. As with the band fee this

covers all lessons from January through the end of the year and you may split up the payment

as well.

**** For those students beginning an instrument for the first time I am offering a group

lesson on Fridays after the band practice. This is in lieu of band with the idea that by

September new instrument players will have gained the skills to join the band. Contact me for

advice on choosing an instrument and where to get one.

If a child does not already take private lessons on their instrument and is interested in

taking some, I would refer you to the music school I teach at on a regular basis. The Red Hook

Community Music Space is a fantastic studio for children as well as adults to study all things

music. I personally believe it to be the best music school in the area for those wishing to create

lasting musical understanding and lifelong music involvement. Visit

www.communitymusicspace.com to learn more. You can contact me with questions or make

inquiries through the website as well as call the studio directly and mention I referred you.

Looking forward to seeing many of you Friday the 18th for our first band meeting of the year!

Sincerely,

Sean Gallagher

Sean Gallagher – Band Instructor

Sean Gallagher has studied music most of his life. He is a working musician playing multiple live

performances every week in various groups. These styles vary from small jazz ensembles, large brass

bands, traditional Irish, classical and funk bands. During the day he teaches private and group lessons

for multiple instruments. His background is in art, acting, and Jazz piano studies. He holds a B.A. in Jazz

Piano Performance from SUNY New Paltz and plays with music greats such as John Menegon, Malcolm

Cecil, Vinnie Martucci, and John Esposito to name a few.

As an educator Sean has eighteen years of music teaching experience including private and

group lesson instruction for multiple instruments. He has held multiple band leadership and director

position roles. Currently he leads bands and gives private lessons at the community music space in Red

Hook NY. He has also spearheaded the development of a music program at ASTOR Services for Children

and Families in Rhinebeck, NY.

In addition to a musical background, Sean’s history includes teaching and directing children’s

theater for the past 12 summers at Dutchess Community College. He is known for keeping students

engrossed, amused, and on point with their appropriate learning goals. Teaching is a natural calling for

Sean and he gains personal fulfillment from assisting others in self-discovery and self-mastery through

arts education. One of Sean’s strengths is an ability to gain sound rapport with students while

commanding respect to guide them beyond their current levels of understanding.

Sean frequently collaborates with artists across disciplines and readily utilizes this skill and his

artistic contacts to benefit his students’ growth and development as musicians and whole persons.

From classical and jazz players at the Bard conservatory to local folk artists Sean has many musical ties in

the arts community which he engages to enhance his student’s education.

Sean lives with his wife and two children in Uptown Kingston and can be seen weekly

performing at Two Ravens Tavern in Kingston and CJ’s Italian Restaurant in Rhinebeck, NY. He believes

that early exposure to music leads to greater appreciation of music and all the arts throughout life.

Are you up for a CHALLENGE???

The KCSFO Penny Challenge will run during Catholic School’s Week,

Monday January 28th

through Thursday, January 31st

.

Be sure to read the rules and share with your students.

There will be TWO SEPARATE CONTESTS, with two winning classes: PreK – 4th

Grade and

5th

– 8th

Grade.

Students collect and deposit pennies into their class bank during the contest. The class

at each campus with the most pennies wins.

BUT it isn’t that simple… students can collect silver change (quarters, dimes, nickels) and

deposit them into opposing grade’s banks. While pennies count as a positive, silver

change is a negative and is subtracted from the class totals.

At the completion of the contest, each grade’s bank will be totaled. There will NOT be a

daily tally maintained throughout the week. Students will be able to see each class bank

and will have to decide where to deposit their silver change by making a guesstimate.

The winners will be announced Monday, February 4th

.
