The Liturgy of the Word

* 1st Reading: Acts 5: 12-16 *

Many signs and wonders were done among the people at the hands of the apostles. They were all together in Solomon's portico. None of the others dared to join them, but the people esteemed them. Yet more than ever, believers in the Lord, great numbers of men and women, were added to them. Thus they even carried the sick out into the streets and laid them on cots and mats so that when Peter came by, at least his shadow might fall on one or another of them. A large number of people from the towns in the vicinity of Jerusalem also gathered, bringing the sick and those disturbed by unclean spirits, and they were all cured.

The word of the Lord. THANKS BE TO GOD.

* Response * Psalm 118: 2-4, 13-15, 22-24

1. Let the house of Israel say, “His mercy endures forever.” Let the house of Aaron say, His mercy endures forever.” Let those who fear the LORD say, “His mercy endures forever.”

2. I was thrust down, thrust down and falling, but the LORD was my helper. The LORD is my strength and my song; he was my savior. There are shouts of joy and salvation in the tents of the just.

3. The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. By the LORD has this been done, a marvel in our eyes. “This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice in it and be glad.

* 2nd Reading: Revelation 1: 9-11a, 12-13, 17-19 *

I, John, your brother, who share with you the distress, the kingdom, and the endurance we have in Jesus, found myself on the island called Patmos because I proclaimed God's word and gave testimony to Jesus. I was caught up in spirit on the Lord's day and heard behind me a voice as loud as a trumpet, which said, "Write on a scroll what you see." Then I turned to see whose voice it was that spoke to me, and when I turned, I saw seven gold lampstands and in the midst of the lampstands one like a son of man, wearing an ankle-length robe, with a gold sash around his chest.

When I caught sight of him, I fell down at his feet as though dead. He touched me with his right hand and said, "Do not be

afraid. I am the first and the last, the one who lives. Once I was dead, but now I am alive forever and ever. I hold the keys to death and the netherworld. Write down, therefore, what you have seen, and what is happening, and what will happen afterwards."

The word of the Lord. THANKS BE TO GOD.

* Gospel Acclamation *

* Verse: * You believe in me, Thomas, because you have seen me, says the Lord;

blessed are they who have not seen me, but still believe. (John 20: 29)

* Gospel: John 20: 19-31 *

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, "Peace be with you." When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you." And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained."

Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe."

Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe." Thomas answered and said to him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed."

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name.

The Gospel of the Lord. PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord!

April 28, 2019 Today’s readings call us to open our eyes and experience the many ways that God’s mercy touches us. The apostles were afraid and stayed locked up in a room on the night of the Resurrection. Jesus appeared to them because he wanted them to know and see he is alive. Jesus breathed on them and they received the Holy Spirit. Now they had the courage to carry on Jesus’ work to build up the Christian Community by preaching, baptizing, curing the sick and forgiving sins. Again and again Jesus says in today’s Gospel, “Peace be with you.” The gift of peace is connected with the power of the Holy Spirit and the mandate that God’s mercy be shared with others. In the reading from Acts it notes the Christian Community that has assembled under Soloman’s Portico. People come from the nearby village to receive God’s mercy in form of healing. Th second reading recounts a vision of “One like the son of man dressed as priest and king.” We soon learn that he is the Risen Christ. The seer is afraid, but the Risen Christ offers him consolation, saying, “Do not be afraid.” We should be consoled as well. God’s divine mercy does not consider a person’s past sins and mortality an obstacle to him. He is focused on the work we need to do. Divine Mercy is God forgiving our every sin, cleansing our consciences, and easing our fears. “Do not be afraid” are the words of Jesus today. He loves you and forgives you. He wants you to share that mercy with people around you. Forgive them just as you have been forgiven. Let them see God’s mercy in you.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, May 2, at 7:00 PM, when we will discuss THE CLOISTER WALK by Kathleen Norris. Norris, raised Protestant, is particularly drawn to Benedictine monastic life, and is a lay associate of the monastery. She has spent much time in residence at St.

John's Abbey in Minnesota, and in this book shares her spirituality with the reader, addressing many subjects which arise during her time there. Celibacy, emotions, liturgy, Virgin Martyrs, and surrender are some of her topics in this compilation based on the church year. While this book was published in 1996, it remains a timely look at our faith. Our discussion group is open to all. If you have any questions please leave Karen Zeleznik a message at 216-570-4099.

I am grateful that Fr. Kevin has given me this opportunity to thank all of you. Over the last eight months, I’ve had the privilege to be a part of your parish community as I discern whether God is calling me to ordination as a Permanent Deacon of the Diocese of Cleveland. I am now completing the second year

of the five-year formation program. The first year is called Aspirancy, in which the aspirant and the diocese each discern whether Admission to Candidacy is God’s will. Year two of the formation program (which I’m completing now) begins with Admission to Candidacy by the bishop. Afterwards, permanent diaconate candidates continue formation through classwork (as in the first year), and are also given a field assignment in a different parish each of the following four years, to learn and grow.

This past year has certainly been a year of learning and growth for me here at Our Lady of Guadalupe. My objective for this year was to focus on the many ministries of charity. Over these months I have learned, first and foremost, the importance of community. This community is so welcoming and supportive! As Fr. Kevin often says, your very presence is a gift to one another, and it has certainly been a gift to me. Your small acts of kindness – a smile, handshake, or greeting – can truly make a difference in people’s lives, and that is a hallmark of this parish. From the food collection and distribution, to the Giving Tree, to the Lenten project, to the critical service of bringing Holy Communion (and the community) to those that cannot make it to Mass, as well as many other ministries that you perform, you have taught me how a life-giving community looks.

As I return to my home parish of St. Barnabas for the summer break, and embark on a new field assignment next fall, I will be keeping all of you in my prayers, and would be very grateful if you would keep me in your prayers as well. Thank you.

~Michael Costantini~

Parish School of Religion We are coming near the end of our PSR year! Our final classes will be on MONDAY, MAY 6th for ALL STUDENTS IN GRADES 1-10. We will gather for 6:30 pm Mass and then celebrate with an end of the year party in the Castilian Rose Room! Children’s Liturgy of the Word Every Sunday at 10:30 am Mass, for children age 3- 2nd grade Family Connection Our family life would no doubt be enhanced if we were able to transform Jesus’ greeting into a central feature in our family’s interactions. After his Resurrection, “Peace be with you” is the first thing that Jesus says to his disciples. This could be our daily family prayer for one another. In today’s Gospel, we also hear that Jesus next breathed on his disciples and gave them the gift of the Holy Spirit. In Baptism, each of us has received the gift of the Holy Spirit as well as the forgiveness of sins. Peace is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Our Baptism, then, invites us to share in the peace that Christ gave to his disciples and commissions us to share that peace of Christ by generously forgiving others as Jesus taught. As you gather as a family, think about gifts that you might receive together such as a coloring book and crayons, a book and bookmark, or an electronic item and batteries. Observe that Jesus also paired two gifts together in today’s Gospel. Read aloud this Sunday’s Gospel, John 20:19-31. Discuss the two gifts Jesus gave to his disciples: peace and the Holy Spirit. Ask: What were the disciples to do with these gifts? Recall that we have each received Jesus’ gift of the Holy Spirit at our Baptism and that peace is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. Observe that since we also have received these gifts from Christ, we are also sent to be people who forgive others as Jesus taught. Determine an action that your family can do to share peace and forgiveness with one another.
