Having established the reality of negativerefraction, we are now free to investigate otherphenomena related to negative index materials. We quickly find that some of the most long-held notions related to waves and optics mustbe rethought! A key example is the case ofimaging by a lens. It is an accepted conventionthat the resolution of an image is limited by thewavelength of light used. The wavelength lim-itation of optics imposes serious constraints onoptical technology: Limits to the density withwhich DVDs can be written and the densityof electronic circuitry created by lithographyare manifestations of the wavelength limita-tion. Yet, there is no fundamental reason whyan image should not be created with arbitrari-ly high resolution. The wavelength limitationis a result of the optical configuration ofconventional imaging.

Negative refraction by a slab of materialbends a ray of light back toward the axisand thus has a focusing effect at the pointwhere the refracted rays meet the axis (Fig.4A). It was recently observed (17 ) that anegative index lens exhibits an entirely newtype of focusing phenomenon, bringing to-gether not just the propagating rays but alsothe finer details of the electromagnetic nearfields that are evanescent and do not prop-agate (Fig. 4B). For a planar slab of nega-tive index material under idealized condi-tions, an image plane exists that contains aperfect copy of an object placed on the oppo-site side of the slab. Although realizable mate-rials will never meet the idealized conditions, nevertheless these new negative index concepts

show that subwavelength imaging is achiev-able, in principle; we need no longer dismissthis possibility from consideration.

This trick of including the high-resolutionbut rapidly decaying part of the image isachieved by resonant amplification of the fields.Materials with either negative permittivity ornegative permeability support a host of surfacemodes closely related to surface plasmons, commonly observed at metal surfaces (6), andit is these states that are resonantly excited. Byamplifying the decaying fields of a source, thesurface modes restore them to the correct am-plitude in the image plane.

The term lens is a misnomer when describ-ing focusing by negative index materials. Re-cent work (18, 19) has shown that a moreaccurate description of a negative index mate-rial is negative space. To clarify, imagine a slabof material with thickness d for which

ε ! –1 and ! " –1

Then, optically speaking, it is as if the slabhad grabbed an equal thickness of emptyspace next to it and annihilated it. In effect, the new lens translates an optical object adistance 2d down the axis to form an image.

The concept of the “perfect lens” at first metwith considerable opposition (20, 21), but thedifficulties raised have been answered by clar-ification of the concept and its limitations (22,23), by numerical simulation (24, 25), and inthe past few months by experiments.

In a recent experiment, a two-dimensionalversion of a negative index material has beenassembled from discrete elements arranged on a

planar circuit board (26). A detail of the exper-iment (Fig. 4C) shows the location of a pointsource and the expected location of theimage. Figure 4D shows the experimentaldata, where the red curve is the measuredresult and lies well within the green curve, the calculated diffraction-limited result. Amore perfect system with reduced losseswould produce better focusing.

The conditions for the “perfect lens” arerather severe and must be met rather accu-rately (23). This is a particular problem atoptical frequencies where any magnetic ac-tivity is hard to find. However, there is acompromise that we can make if all the di-mensions of the system are much less thanthe wavelength: As stated earlier, over shortdistances the electric and magnetic fields areindependent. We may choose to concentrateentirely on the electric fields; in which case itis only necessary to tune to ε " –1 and wecan ignore ! completely. This “poor man’s”lens will focus the electrostatic fields, limitedonly by losses in the system. Thus, it has beenproposed that a thin slab of silver a fewnanometers thick can act as a lens (17 ). Ex-periments have shown amplification of lightby such a system in accordance with theoret-ical predictions (27 ).

Photonic Crystals and NegativeRefractionMetamaterials based on conducting elementshave been used to demonstrate negative re-fraction with great success. However, the useof conductors at higher frequencies, especial-ly optical, can be problematic because oflosses. As an alternative, many researchershave been investigating the potential of neg-ative refraction in the periodic structuresknown as photonic crystals (28). These ma-terials are typically composed of insulatorsand therefore can exhibit very low losses, even at optical frequencies.

In photonic crystals, the size and period-icity of the scattering elements are on theorder of the wavelength rather than beingmuch smaller. Describing a photonic crystalas a homogeneous medium is inappropriate,so it is not possible to define values of ε or !.Nevertheless, diffractive phenomena in pho-tonic crystals can lead to the excitation ofwaves for which phase and group velocitiesare reversed in the same manner as in nega-tive index metamaterials. Thus, under theright conditions, negative refraction can beobserved in photonic crystals.

In 2000, it was shown theoretically thatseveral photonic crystal configurations couldexhibit the same types of optical phenomenapredicted for negative index materials, in-cluding negative refraction and imaging by aplanar surface (23).

Invisibility: Visible invisibility

Nature knows bestWhen thinking of new and inventive cloaking schemes, there is one thing worth bearing in mind: nature mayhave already done some of the work for us. While everynaturally occurring solid material is, by definition, homogenous, which we do not want, anisotropy is pre-sent in a broad range of crystalline substances; it is anintrinsic property derived from the lattice structure. Socan we construct an optical cloak that is both isotropicand non-magnetic, and that makes use of the anisotropypresent in nature? This is the idea behind a macro-scopic, broadband optical cloak for visible lightreported by a team led by Shuang Zhang from theUniversity of Birmingham and Pendry at Imperial, and, independently, by George Barbastathis’ team at theSingapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology.

Interestingly, both macroscopic cloaks were madefrom the crystalline material calcite, which was found toshow optical anisotropy and double refraction by theDanish scientist Rasmus Bartholin as long ago as 1669.This new version of a carpet cloak uses a triangular-shaped bump rather than a smooth one, and mathe-matical analysis shows that when an appropriatetransformation is used, the constituent material above

the ground plane can be made from simple non-mag-netic, homogeneous materials. More importantly, thelevel of anisotropy necessary is not particularly severeand can be readily fulfilled using birefringent crystals. As a result, a very rare case in transformation-baseddevices is reached: a spatially varying index profile isno longer required, which paves the way to entirelyeliminating the time-consuming and money-drainingneed for nanofabrication.

A schematic of the device shown in figure 3a illus-trates how light is bent to fool the eye. Two pieces ofcalcite with different crystal directions are gluedtogether to form a pyramid with an obtuse triangle-shaped recess in the metal-coated underside. The lightbeam is deviated multiple times before exiting the crys-tal, in such a way that it appears to be reflected directlyfrom a planar mirror. The researchers successfully con-cealed several centimetre-scale objects, including apaperclip, a small steel wedge and a piece of paper (fig-ure 3b–d). The cloaks work reasonably well across theentire visible spectrum, from red to blue, thanks to therelatively weak dispersion in the transparent crystal. An invisibility cloak should hide objects at all incidentangles; this is also confirmed, as long as the illumin-ation is on one side of the pyramid and the observer ison the other.

Cloaking contemplationsLet us take a step back from the flurry of excitement ofthe two splendid calcite-cloak demonstrations and ask:how close are we to an ideal cloak? Well, unfortunatelyyou can tell that a calcite cloak is there because thedevices only work for polarized light and operate inher-ently in a 2D configuration. Also, the cloaking perform-ance is compromised when it is used in free spacerather than immersed in a high-index liquid.Furthermore, we would prefer a direct see-througheffect in air rather than seeing a strange piece of mir-ror lying on the ground, which is the appearance of cur-rent carpet cloaks and gives the game away somewhat.

But we should not be too pessimistic either, becausetechnology keeps on moving and surprises us time andagain. Indeed, as we were writing this article, the sametwo groups behind the masterpieces in figure 2 bothreported making visible-light counterparts of their struc-tures with much smaller feature sizes and more deli-cately crafted materials (M Gharghi et al. 2011 Nano.Lett. DOI:10.1021/nl201189z; J Fischer et al. 2011 Opt.Lett. 36 2059). Yet, while what has so far been achievedin invisibility science has been a tour de force of physicsand engineering, our children will probably still have towait some time for that real Harry Potter cloak. !

(a) Light rays are bent multiple times in this calcite cloak, as if they were directly reflected froma flat mirror. Solid yellow lines represent reflective coatings, while the dashed yellow lineindicates a virtual ground plane. Anything within the yellow lines is invisibly cloaked. (b and c) Performance of the calcite cloak in a liquid. The image of sand behind the triangular-prism-shaped crystal (20 mm in height) is normally distorted, as shown in (b). However, undercertain illumination conditions the calcite cloak, together with anything hidden in the triangularrecess, vanishes and no visual distortion of the sand is observed when looking through thedevice. (d) A piece of pink-coloured paper is inserted through the deformed bottom side of acalcite cloak (15 mm in height). The central part of the paper is rendered invisible while thebackground pattern is unaltered.
