MLTAV 2016 Annual Conference - Voting for Languages Preparations for the MLTAV Annual State Conference, ‘Voting for Languages’, are underway.

Planned Conference Keynote Speaker Panel:

In the lead-up to the 2016 federal election (expected around September, October 2016 - according to Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull), the MLTAV is in the process of inviting the Federal Minister for Education and Training, Senator the Hon Simon Birmingham, along with the Shadow Minister for Education / Shadow Minister for Early Childhood, Kate Ellis MP and Senator Nick McKim, Senator for Tasmania, and spokesperson for The Greens Education Policy to participate in a Conference Keynote Panel discussion.

Each major political party representative will be asked to discuss their Party’s plans for ensuring that Australian students are offered quality Languages programs into the future, including funding commitments to support these programs and their Party’s policy for Languages and Cultures education in Australia. This will be followed by a brief Q & A timeslot.

Attendance at Ready?Set?Go! is not a pre-requisite for involvement in the 2016 program. This workshop will also provide information about the Victorian Curriculum and how this connects with the Australian Curriculum for Languages.

Bio Guest Speaker - Kathryn MacfarlaneKathryn Macfarlane is a languages education expert, professional change management consultant and an accredited coach and NLP Practitioner. She currently works with the Enterprise Change Leadership Team at National Australia Bank, providing advice and insights at an enterprise level of business change capacity to successfully embed planned transformations. Through her coaching practice, ‘Persistent Shift’, she provides executive and personal coaching to leaders and individuals who are committed to achieving sustainable change. Kathryn is also a successful yachtswoman, having completed over 20,000 nautical miles in offshore racing and cruising. She brings a unique perspective on agility, resilience and endurance to achieving high-quality change outcomes.Kathryn was recognised as a Highly Accomplished Teacher for her work between 2003 - 2009, transforming Languages at Ruyton Girls Junior School into a successful CLIL program teaching ICT in French. She went on to become the Languages Education Consultant for Independent Schools Victoria, providing advice to schools on Languages programs and the integration of ICT in learning activities, facilitating professional development for teachers and service on numerous professional boards and committees. She has provided languages education consulting services to schools and tertiary institutions in Australia, New Zealand and France. Her unique combination of experience in transformational change in both the corporate and education sectors has contributed to Kathryn’s passion for aligning people and organisations with their purpose - to identify a future vision of success and achieve the persistent cultural and bevarioural shift required to get there.

The VSL provides language classes for school students in Years 1-12 (VCE) who do not have access to those languages in their home school. The Hamer Scholarships offer Victorians the opportunity for language study and cultural engagement with the dynamic and exciting markets of China, Indonesia, Japan or Korea.

These four leading world economies are making a significant contribution to Victoria’s cultural diversity and economic prosperity. Live and study in China, Indonesia, Japan or Korea and improve language skills and cultural understanding; develop business and people-to-people networks; and contribute to Victoria’s international engagement.

• Hamer Scholarships are valued at $10,000 for language study in China or Indonesia and $15,000 for language study in Japan or Korea.

• The scholarships are offered for a minimum of one semester or 5 – 6 months study at selected universities or institutions in these countries.

• The next Hamer Scholarships application round will open in February 2016.

• Check website for exact application dates.

• The program is open to Victorians aged 21 or above who are Australian citizens or permanent residents (Victorians living and working in China, Indonesia, Japan or Korea may be considered).

• The scholarships are primarily aimed at Victorians working in the public, private, not-for-profit and creative and academic industries.

• Applicants should demonstrate how the scholarship would significantly benefit their business, career path, study plan, or their employer’s current or future engagement with China, Indonesia, Japan or Korea.

• Scholarship recipients will become business, cultural and educational representatives for Victoria.

ESA Survey: Understanding ICT in Your School Education Services Australia (ESA) is a national, not-for-profit company owned by Australian Education Ministers. ESA specialises in the planning, design and delivery of education technology products and service to support learning and teaching.

ESA is looking to better understand schools' use of ICT and their future needs. It is undertaking market research with educators from across the country to understand how to effectively and sustainably deliver ICT products and services that provide measurable outcomes for schools, teachers and students. ESA is seeking your perspective on what good education technology should looks like, as well as the barriers and enablers to effectively using ICT.

About Carrousel Theatre: Carrousel Theatre originated in Europe and has been performing in Australia since 2000. Our objective is to encourage and promote the study of languages and culture through the tradition of puppetry.

A bilingual show: The shows are performed bilingually, (LOTE+ ENGLISH) which gives the students the opportunity to understand the play and to enjoy a cultural experience in its original language. The interaction of the puppets with its public challenges and stimulates the students to use a foreign language without inhibition. All around the world, puppetry remains a powerful form of expression in the performing arts. There are no boundaries to what can be created or performed.

The audience: Suitable for Primary & Secondary schools, (years 7+8) the performance & LOTE content adapted accordingly.

What we need: 3 tables or desks, 3 chairs and a dividing board.

Where we play: At your school: in a theatre, a hall, a gymnasium or even a double classroom. (Ceiling height: 2,70m or more)

Duration of the peformance: 1 hour performance (50 minute show)- 1 hour and 15 min. to build up the theatre-45 minutes to dismantle it.

Minimum number of students: 80 students Maximum number of students: Between 180 and 200 students per show (depending upon the size of the room where the show will be performed). We can perform up to 3 shows a day.

Beaconhills is seeking a suitably qualified, dynamic and enthusiastic Teacher of Japanese to work in part-nership with the Head of Japanese in providing effective learning outcomes for Japanese Language students at the Berwick Campus for a short-term replacement contract. The Japanese Teacher is primarily responsible for teaching the Middle and Year 9 Japanese language classes. The Japanese teacher will be expected to develop curriculum and to work as part of the appropriate Learn-ing Team within the framework of the aims and strategic goals of Beaconhills. The incumbent must thrive on working as part of a dynamic team of dedicated professionals who are committed to fostering excellence in their students. The position is full-time and commences immediately for a period of several weeks. This position reports to, and takes direction from, the Head of Department, the Heads of Teaching & Learn-ing and the Heads of Section, and is accountable to the Campus Principal and the Headmaster. How to Advertise with MLTAV The Modern Language Teachers’ Association produces two publications, a journal - Languages Victoria, and a newsletter, LanguagesConnect. The advertising rates are the same for both publications. Commercial members of the MLTAV are entitled to one 1/2 page, or two 1/4 pages, of advertising per year free, in either of the publications.

Advertising Languages Connect Published: mid-February; mid-March; mid-April; mid-June; mid- August, mid-October and December, based upon need. The deadline for Languages Connect is the end of the month prior to publication.
