Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Gifts! Gifts! Gifts! Gifts! Gifts! Gifts!

Many gifts come wrapped in beautiful paper. Loving gifts of words and actions wrap themselves around our hearts. Ah, but our greatest gift was wrapped in swaddling clothes. This Christmas, let us ponder the gifts given to our children and families through Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. Last month I asked parents and children to take a moment to share with me their thoughts on the gifts that Catechesis of the Good Shepherd has given to them and their family. Some may surprise you; may they all touch your heart, and may you enjoy the gift of understanding why we offer Catechesis of the Good Shepherd here at Trinity-by-the-Cove.

Gift of Jesus: Olivia enjoys all of the many works in the atrium. “They help me experience Jesus in different ways.” The atrium provides a way for our children to come to Jesus by themselves instead of listening and adopting their parents’ view of religion. Max remembers his time in the

atrium, and the gift he has is a deeper understanding of God and our religion. Our children grow a very personal relationship with the Good Shepherd.

Gift of friends: Katherine comes to the atrium because it gives us time together. Lisa tells of a day she overheard her daughter asking her best friend from school, “Do you know Jesus? I know Jesus from Atrium.” Lilly said this like Jesus is a friend or neighbor, someone that she knows per-

sonally. It warmed my heart. What a friend we have in Jesus.

Gift of relationships: Rachel explains it's about relationships and includes relationships with our fellow Catechists. She has watched her mom, a catechist in the True Vine Atrium, develop friend-ships with the other catechists. She also has appreciated being brought into the fold as an assis-

tant. Her mom says, “I have always welcomed relationships that Rachel forms with other adults; each one expands her world and heart. Watching my daughter grow in her faith and service to Trinity, and the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, humbles me as her Mom.”

Gift of Service: Colin immediately tells us about the work we do when we send money to help people in Africa and other places. The atrium has had several offering projects to collect money for the Tumaini fund, and Episcopal Relief and Development projects. Lilly continued collecting

money this summer from a lemonade stand and donated an extra $66 to buy a cow from ERD’s Gift for Life catalog. In a thank you note to the children for helping to make communion bread for Rite III, Susan writes, “Making the bread for communion is a wonderful service you have done for your church.”

Gift of meditation: The atrium environment is incredibly soothing and calming. One catechist observed a young boy, going through a difficult week, express his desire to sit quietly and simply meditate by the prayer table in an effort to sort out the events of the week. Isabella says these

Page 3 December, 2012

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd meditating works are a gift. As an alumni of the atrium, Max, recalls the good memories of the peaceful and quiet time that he spent in there.

Gift of evangelism: Lauryn receives such happiness from introducing Ms. Marcie and Ms. Anne to the atrium. (Ask Marcie and Anne to tell you the story!) During an Open House, Lauryn has also been known to go into the courtyard and invite people just standing around,

to come into the atrium. Did you know that there are 7 children who came to the atrium first, because of their grandparents?

Gift of connection: Not only do the children (and catechists) connect with Jesus and with each other, but they make connections between the atrium and the Liturgy. Zachary and his sister like bringing the bread and the wine to the Altar for the Eucharist. Merrill is glad that her

mommy talked in church during the Stewardship time. Ms. Marcie is very grateful for the atrium’s altar works that have helped her work with Alice Fraser to prepare the Altar for Rite III.

Gift of wonder: Diane, as a catechist and a parent, looks with wonder at our children in the atria. “ I am constantly amazed at their spirituality. I hear amazing reflections out of the mouths of 8, 9 and 10 year olds and have watched them eagerly absorb their environment.”

Gift of children: “Being a catechist is a gift itself because I am working with children. My own

children observe the love I have for the children in the Good Shepherd Atrium. That is another gift that my children are receiving from my work as a catechist.” Another catechist writes, “It

genuinely fills my heart and soul to witness the children’s innocence as they enjoy our incredi- bly loving God!” In the Good Shepherd atrium, Meredith says, “I get it when I interact with the small children and witness their joy in being in the atrium. Some difficult concepts just seem to make sense when presented in this format.”

Thank you, Trinity for your gift of support of Catechesis of the Good Shepherd. Its faith for-mation offers many gifts to our children and families, for our parish and for God’s Kingdom.

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights. James 1:17

Coming this Month

Page 4 December, 2012

Advent is a word that comes to us from Latin and means “coming,” and we take it to mean the coming of Christ. In the Church, we take the four Sundays before Christmas (the Advent Season) to think and pray about the coming of Jesus Christ. Part of what Advent is about is putting the focus on Christmas and that wonderful eve when we come to church, sing carols, have great dinner feasts, and ex-change gifts. We also pray about Jesus’ coming again in glory.

Advent Placemats and Lessons & Carols

To encourage families with busy schedules to sit down for family dinner, say grace and spend time talking about God, Advent Placemats are available. There is a different placemat for each Sunday in Ad-vent. The placemats are sold in sets of 4 for $10 and include an online Advent Devotional based on Les-sons and Carols. Proceeds benefit Children’s Ministry.

Advent Cards Teaching Children the Beauty of Notes

Christmas cards are always a popular way to extend warm wishes and loving care during the Christmas Season. In an age when email and texting provide instant connection, the handwritten note and joy of receiving a card in the mail stand as a unique and meaningful way to express the joy of Christmas and the importance of thoughtful preparation.

The cards are sold in sets of 4 for $5 (proceeds sup-porting Children’s Ministry) and include a devotional that should be used weekly in concert with Sunday worship—the themes in the cards and in the Scripture readings are taken from Scripture read in church dur-ing the Sundays in Advent. The Art: After imagining the concept of the cards, an artist in Ocean Springs, Mis-sissippi named Magtilt van Thiel was asked to create art-work that would give children beautiful images that would engage them.

Baker’s Dozen Enjoy Fellowship with other Trinitarians

and help bake Christmas Cookies December 1 and December 8, 1-3 pm

For the past three years, a dedicated and growing group of Trinitarians has helped Fr. Edward prepare and bake over 600 cookies for decorating following church in Advent. On December 1st we will gather to prepare dough and begin cutting cookies. On December 8 we will gather to bake the cookies, prepare the icing and decorate the parish hall. Then, on December 9th, we gather to help the children, youth and all parishioners decorate Christmas cookies. Email Polly in the parish office if you can join the group: [email protected].

VOICES OF ARABIA with Thomas Tyrrell

December 2nd, 9th, and 16th at 10:15 History is not a blueprint, but a cautionary tale.

Trinitarian, Thomas Tyrrell will lead a three part series entitled, "Voices of Arabia".

The New World makes history; the Muslim World lives it every day. Whether we like it not, Islam is the par-amount influence in the lives of millions in the Middle East and where to our surprise religion overrules politics. Perhaps we Christians could make more sense of the discordant voices of the "Arab Spring", if we better under-stood Islam and the modern history of the NEW Muslim States of the Middle East.

Thomas Tyrrell is a retired international lawyer and genealogist. He was a member of the International Bar Association, the American Bar Association and an in-ternational director of Association of Professional Genealogists. For many years he has been a member in London of Chatham House, The Royal Institute of International Affairs and United Services Institute for International and Defence Studies; and elsewhere the EU Institute for Security Studies in Paris and ENSOR Russia in Moscow.

The son of an emigrant from America to England, he was born in London and educated at Cambridge Uni-versity from where he holds both a Bachelors Degree with Honours and a Master’s Degree. For ten years he worked for an International Merchant Bank in London and then for the British Government, as an Advisor in the National Economic Development Office.

In 1973 he took up the practice of international law in Luxembourg and Geneva moving later with his family to the Isle of Man. Thomas was deputy chairman of the overseas subsidiary of Banque Sarasin of Basle, one of

Coming this Month Switzerland’s oldest private banks. In 1999 he co-founded with others in Europe and America, an international trust company in Auckland, New Zealand, of which he remains a director.

We appreciate Tom's willingness to share his knowledge and experience with us. Please join the group in the Adult Formation Room on December 2nd, 9th, and 16th at 10:15 for this interesting forum.

WWOMENOMEN OFOF TTRINITYRINITY Organ Recital by John Fenstermaker Advent and Christmas Music Tuesday, December 11th Recital at 11:30, Luncheon at 12:30

D irector of Music John Fenstermaker will pull out all the stops for us in this holiday recital

of tuneful and joyous music. Our beautiful Casa-vant organ is acclaimed for its clarity and its ability to play many styles of music, from J. S. Bach to Leroy Anderson. John’s recital is always a delight; bring a guest and introduce them to our church family. Please do sign the reservation roster in the parish hall; lunch is $10 per person.

The Decorating of the Church for Christmas

Included in this issue of the Trinitarian you will find an envelope to use for your donation to participate in decorating the church for Christ-mas. On the envelope please indicate who is giving the donation, and who it is given in memory of or in thanksgiving for. It will help the office greatly if you print this information so it can be correctly printed into all the Christ-mas Eve and Christmas Day bulletins. Please return your envelope and donation to the Par-ish Office by December 16th (feel free to put it in the offering plates on Sunday).

There is no set amount for your donation for flowers; whatever is comfortable for you and your family.

Scholarships for the children of the El Buen Samari-tan School in the Dominican Republic:

Trinity continues its financial and spiritual support of the Albergue School for the barrio children (babies thru the 3rd grade) in the Dominican Re-public. Currently there are 90 children in the school who because of our help attend the school, have decent clothing and two hot meals a day. Pur-chasing a scholarship for $275 covers the expense for one child to attend for a full year and keeps them off the streets where they would be without your help. This is Trinity’s eighth year assisting the school and Trinitarians have been very generous in their support of this world mission project. These scholarships make a meaningful gift for family members and friends.

Christmas Offering

This year’s Christmas Offering will be directed solely to Habitat for Humanity. Trinity’s associ-ation with Habitat is long-standing, and we are fortunate to be able to continue our support of such a worthwhile organization that helps so many.

You will be receiving a separate letter from the Rector regarding our yearly support for Habitat for Humanity.

Each year at this time we are all presented with many opportunities of gifting outside of our immediate family and friends. It can be overwhelming and challenging to arrive at a personal plan. No one should ever feel obligated to take part in or commit to all opportunities presented here at Trinity. We have grouped them here together to help you decide if you wish to participate in any of these selections.

player to admit air direct from the bellows to the opening at the foot of the pipe, as if a flute player could control the speech of dozens of pipes in a sin-gle, very large multi-flute! Great control and subtle-ty is possible, compared with today’s electro-mechanical action which admits air into the pipes in a pre-determined way. Typical of the 17th century there is no central reservoir, but two diagonal feed-ers which carry the wind generated by two iron foot pedals one can see at the right-hand side of the case. Since it is not always possible in the 21st century to find assistants to pump, a small Swiss electric blower has been built into the organ. Hugh McLean To be continued next month.

"The Holly and The Ivy" Christmas Market, was a great success, thanks to the many who gave so much time and care for this event. Without publicity, few people would have been aware of our event.

Mary Cooper was on top of getting the word out, with a two page spread in the November issue of Naples Illustrated and a partial page in the Naples Charity Register. Walt Tiburski arranged for the word to get out over the "Waves". I cannot list other names, there are too many, and I would leave someone out. I am grateful to all of you, from the set-up to the clean-up, the vendors, the selling, the food, the good fellowship which comes from the heart of all the workers and the goodwill to all of our guests. Cheers to everybody. I enjoyed working with each one of you. Sally Weir, Chair

The Friederici Chamber Organ Part I (pronounced “free-der-EET-see”)

D uring the past few weeks those using the Par-ish Hall may have noticed the small organ at

the far end of the hall Although a good deal of the organ’s history is conjectural, a few descriptive words affirm that the instrument may well be the oldest playable organ in the Western Hemisphere. Its origin is Gera, a small town in south-central Germany, not far from Erfurt, the state capital of Thuringia, and the much larger Leipzig, where Bach spent much of his career. Organists or music historians would call it a Positiv, an instrument that because of its weight could be played only in one location, rather than the smaller Portativ, which could be carried in liturgical processions, or other-wise easily moved from one location in a church to another. However, to confuse the issue, the owners will be providing a rolling platform which will pro-vide much flexibility of use in the parish hall for liturgies or concerts and similar occasions. In fact, the oil paintings on the outer doors of the organ suggest that it was originally used on both secular and sacred occasions.

Art historians believe that these paintings date from the first half of the 17th century, placing the instrument in the residence of a wealthy person who celebrated life in both musical entertainment (left door) and church services (right door). To the accompaniment of the richly-robed male lutenist on the left, the putto adds a melody on the viola da braccio. A treble part book on the floor is open at an Aria, although the music (carefully rendered by the artist) resembles more a typical German folk song. In the right-hand panel the putto has shed his colorful garment and instrument to hold up the music for two Lutheran chorales, Allein Gott in der Hoeh sey Ehr (To God alone in the highest be praised) and Heilig, Heilig ist Gott der Herr Sabaoth (Holy, holy is God the Lord Sabaoth).

The organ mechanism is what we call today “tracker”: light wooden rods (trackers) permit the

Good down home southern food will be on the menu. And many more surprises are in store!!

Dr. Rebecca Lambert and Dr. Jon Sonne will be hosting our Patron Party this year on February 8th, the Friday evening before the “Hot Night in Havana”!

Our mission is to improve the lives of the underprivileged in our own community by raising money for the Archangel Fund to benefit Collier County Charities. The money earned this year will be dis-tributed to Collier County charities that focus on “Child Protection, Advocacy and Education.” If you own a business or are involved with a business that would like to be a Sponsor of Fine Art of Living this year, please contact one of the four chairs. We’d love to put your money to good use for the underprivileged children in our community! The antique organ in the parish hall, on loan from Hugh and Anne McLean, will be first heard publicly in Naples on Wednesday, January 23rd. The informal concert will include music of Sweelinck, Bach and Handel. Dinner will follow. The organ dates from the first half of the 17th century, built ca. 1650. It may well be the oldest playable organ in the western hemisphere. It is amazing that the organ has survived for 350 years of wars and revolutions – it is even more astounding that it still plays music on pipes built centuries ago.

Please sign the roster for each Wednesday Night Out you plan attending. Dinner will be $10 per person. If your plans change and you cannot attend a date that you RSVP’d for, please contact the parish office so we can adjust the numbers and amount of food that is ordered and consequently paid for.

What is Focus on Faith?

Focus on Faith is a small group experience to learn more about the Episcopal Church and its beliefs. It is also a time to con-nect with others in our Chris-tian journey. The program is led by the clergy

Who is invited to Focus on Faith? Anyone who is considering joining the Episcopal Church Anyone raised in another denomination Anyone wanting to learn more about the Episcopal church Any long-time Episcopalians who'd like a refresher course Any Episcopalians who find themselves at a time in their lives where they would like to renew their Baptismal vows. Do you have to promise to make a commitment or join the Church if you come? No. Focus on Faith is a place to inquire & explore.

If you want to join the Church, how do you do that? If you have not been baptized, we ask you to participate in Focus on Faith. Participants are pre-pared from January to Easter with Baptism at the Easter Vigil. Anyone already baptized may contact Judy Fratus (239) 262-6581 ext. 213 to have your let-ter of membership transferred from your former parish.

If you have already been baptized and want to be confirmed, can you attend Focus on Faith? Yes. Baptized adults who are not confirmed may join the program that leads to Confirmation when Bishop Smith makes his visit to Trinity

What if you are already baptized and confirmed? Focus on Faith is also a means for renewal of our Christian faith and some people go through the pro-gram for this purpose. Those who wish to renew their baptismal vows with laying on of hands by Bishop Smith at our parish visitation are invited to participate.

Focus on Faith begins in January 13, 2013

How strong is your faith? Strong enough to let you walk on water like Peter? Have you explored your spiritual path?

How did you get to where you are in your faith? Have you thought about where you’re going?

During our Women’s Retreat, our retreat leaders from the Franciscan Center in Tampa will help examine our spiritual journey and deepen our faith while we get to know other women from Trinity.

We will begin with dinner and fellowship on Friday at 6:30 p.m., and will end before lunch on Sunday with plenty of time to get home by mid-afternoon. There will be free time scheduled for canoeing, kayaking, shopping at the nearby outlet mall, napping, reading, gazing at the lake in rocking chairs or walking the nature trails, etc. We will stay in the “Retreat House” at DaySpring.
