• Approximately3000m3oftotalpetroleumhydrocarbon(TPH)contaminatedsoil;
• TheTPHlevelsexceededtheSouthAustralialandfilldisposalcriteria,thereforeremediationwasrequired;
• Bioremediationwaspreferredoveralternativemethods(suchasthermaldestructionorchemicalstabilisation),asa‘fitforpurpose’soilwasproducedratherthanjustwastesoil;
• Abench-toptrialwasconductedtoensurethatthecontaminatedsoilwassuitableforbioremediation;
• Aco-compostingmethodwasusedwithstaticaeratedbiopiles.Freshgreenorganicsweresourcedfromlocalprocessorstoacceleratethebiologicalprocess;
• Inorganicfertiliserandchickenmanurewerealsoaddedtothesoiltoprovideidealconditionsfortheproliferationofthemicrobesnaturallyoccurringinthesoil;
• Thedesignofthissystemminimisedfugitiveemissionsbyencapsulatingthesoilinahigh-densitypolyethylene(HDPE)liner;
