Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History

The Peabody was founded in 1866 with a gift of $150,000 from philanthropist George Peabody, the uncle of O.C. Marsh. Today the Museum’s renowned collections of 12 million specimens and artifacts are the basis for

research, publication, exhibition and education in the realms of natural history, archaeology and ethnology.

The Peabody’s renowned vertebrate paleontology collection, third largest in the nation, includes Deinonychus antirrhopus, a relative of Velociraptor discovered by Yale’s John Ostrom, along with fossils collected and named by O.C. Marsh: Apatosaurus (“Brontosaurus”), Stegosaurus and Triceratops. They are on display in the Great Hall of Dinosaurs over which looms the world’s largest and most famous dinosaur painting, Rudolph Zallinger’s Pulitzer-Award-winning The Age of Reptiles.

One of the Peabody’s earliest collections is the outstanding rock and mineral collection started by Benjamin Silliman for use in his pioneering teaching of geology and mineralogy at Yale, several specimens of which are on exhibit in the new Hall of Minerals, Earth & Space. Elihu Yale would have a soft spot for this exhibit. Critical to the founding of Yale University was the fortune he amassed trading diamonds, a gem featured here in the history of diamond cuts.
