The present issue ‘INSIGHT’ is a record of the events organized by the Department of English for the odd semester of 2019-20. The Guest lecture was an effort to impart the interest for understanding the text and giving life to the words with acting. The department is con- stantly striving to indulge the learning spirit among students and likeness for the English language and Literature. “Literature adds to reality. During the odd semester of 2019-20, the Department of English (Shift II) organized

two guest lectures for the first- and second-year students of B.A English. The first

guest lecture was conducted on August 9, 2019 on the topic- ‘Making of a novel with

reference to The Vicar of the Wakefield and Animal Farm’. It was conducted by

Ms. R. Nandhini, Assistant Professor, SIVET College, Chennai. The session emphasized

on the structure of a novel and discussed the elements like plot, rising action, falling

action, characters and social environment involved in constructing strong novels like

‘The Vicar of Wakefield’ and ‘Animal Farm’, two classics of English Literature that has

been prescribed for our students.

1. Dr. Kuljeet Kaur presented a paper 'Relooking into estranged father-son relationship in Dance like a Man' in RSRI Conference on Contemporaneity of Language and Literature in the Robotized millennium, organized by SRMIST, Chennai on the 4th and 5th of October 2019.

2. Ms. C. Rajkumari was the resource person for the Guest Lecture on the topic, ‘Feminism, Draupadi and Theatre’ in DRBCCC Hindu College, Chennai on September 25, 2019 .

3. Ms. R. Kalaiarasi was the External Examiner for the Soft Skills Viva in Tamilnadu Institute of Labor on October 17, 2019.

4. Ms. Subha Jasmine R participated in the National Seminar on Hinduism for Youth on September 21, 2019.

5. Ms. Subhashini R attended the ‘Art of Thesis Writing’ workshop jointly presented by Dept. of Visual Communication, Loyola College and Rehoboth Academic Services at Loyola College, Chennai on October 12, 2019.

STUDENTS’ ACTIVITIES

1. Twelve students from both I & II years of BA English attended the Two- day National Confer-

ence on ‘Contemporary Reflections on English Literature’ organized by Annai Violet College of

Arts and Science, Chennai on August 5 and 6, 2019.

2. Four students from II Year, BA English attended the national seminar on ‘Myths: Seeking

meaning from the Modern World’, organized by Dr. MGR Janaki College of Arts and Science for

Women, Chennai.

3. Six students from I and II years of BA English participated in the singing competition for young

talents organized by Guru Nanak College, Chennai on August 2, 2019.

4. Four students from I year participated in the ‘Cooking without Fire’ competition organized by

Guru Nanak College, Chennai on August 11, 2019.

5. The students of II year BA English performed a dramatic reading and enactment of ‘The Wreck

of the Deutschland’, a spiritual poem written by Gerard Manley Hopkins.

The Department organized a guest lecture on the

topic- ‘Phonetics’ and the resource person was Dr.

G. Kalvikkarasi, Assistant Professor and Head, De-

partment of English, DRBCCC College, Chennai. She

explained the importance of phonetics in our every-

day use of the language and focused mainly on the

nuances of articulation and linguistics.
