James 5

5 1Come now, you rich people, weep and wail for the miseries that are

coming to you. 2Your riches have rotted, and your clothes are moth-

eaten. 3Your gold and silver have rusted, and their rust will be evidence

against you, and it will eat your flesh like fire. You have laid up treasure

for the last days. 4Listen! The wages of the laborers who mowed your

fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of the

harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. 5You have lived on

the earth in luxury and in pleasure; you have fattened your hearts in a day

of slaughter. 6You have condemned and murdered the righteous one, who

does not resist you. 7Be patient, therefore, beloved, until the coming of the

Lord. The farmer waits for the precious crop from the earth, being patient

with it until it receives the early and the late rains. 8You also must be

patient. Strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is

was a human being like us, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain,

truth and is brought back by another, 20you should know that whoever

10 2Some Pharisees came, and to test [Jesus] they asked, “Is it lawful for

a man to divorce his wife?” 3He answered them, “What did Moses

command you?” 4They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate

of dismissal and to divorce her.” 5But Jesus said to them, “Because of your

hardness of heart he wrote this commandment for you. 6But from the

beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ 7‘For this reason

a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, 8and the

two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one

flesh. 9Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

10Then in the house the disciples asked him again about this matter. 11He

said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits

adultery against her; 12and if she divorces her husband and marries

another, she commits adultery.”

13People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch

them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. 14But when Jesus saw this,

he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to me; do

not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God

belongs. 15Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God

as a little child will never enter it.” 16And he took them up in his arms, laid

Celebrant Let us confess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed:

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven,

THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION


Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself;

and when we had sinned against you and become subject to evil and death,

you, in your mercy, sent your only Son Jesus Christ into the world for our

salvation. By the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary he became flesh and

dwelt among us. In obedience to your will, he stretched out his arms upon

the Cross and offered himself once for all, that by his suffering and death

we might be saved. By his resurrection he broke the bonds of death,

trampling Hell and Satan under his feet. As our great high priest, he

ascended to your right hand in glory, that we might come with confidence

before the throne of grace.

On the night that he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and

when he had given thanks, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying,

“Take, eat; this is my Body, which is given for you: Do this in

holy Sacrament, and be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us
