Special Summer Family Programs

Summer Reading Kick-off | Mon., June 4 @ 1 - 3 pm Start off your summer reading adventure with a selfie station, games, an emergency vehicle “petting zoo,” and the return of Captain Chilli Bear’s Cardboard Box Regatta!

For the Regatta, please bring a cardboard box, at least 11” long x 15” wide x 8” deep — we’ll provide paints to decorate it (you might want to wear something that can get dirty)! You can participate in the regatta at 1:15 or 2:15, with a decorating session followed by a race.

Wild Time Exotics | Wed., June 13 @ 1 pm Hosted at Pearce Community Center Meet some of nature’s most intriguing creatures close up and in person. You’ll have the chance to hold or pet them, too.

Absolute Science | Wed., June 20 @ 1 pm A live, interactive educational program with the focus on FUN. Audience members become lab assistants for dramatic and fascinating experiments.

The Great Bug Show! | Mon., June 25 @ 1 pm Learn about the wonderful world of insects when students from the University of Illinois Entomology Department bring the school’s Insect Zoo and specimens to Chillicothe. Our program will conclude with the opportunity for the brave and willing to eat a bug!

*Hot Air Balloons | Tue., June 26 @ 6:30 pm (rain date June 27) Get the inside scoop about hot air balloons! Jim House of Midwest Balloon Rides will share the history of ballooning, what goes into manufacturing balloons, fascinating facts, and stunning photos. Weather and wind permitting, we’ll get to see the basket and flames, and maybe even observe the inflation of the enormous balloon itself! Please register by June 25.

Juggling Funny Stories | Thur., July 5 @ 1:30 pm Chris Fascione’s fabulous interactive performance combines comedy, mime, juggling and storytelling. You will be amazed and inspired!

Babaloo! | Tue., July 10 @ 10 am A high-energy, over-the-top, rousing musical experience – you’ve never seen anything quite like Babaloo!

*Celebration Pool Party | Sat., July 21 @ 10:30 am - noon Celebrate your completion of the Summer Reading Program with a dip in the pool at Shore Acres and snacks! All ages. Ticket required.

Preschool Story Time Tue., Jun 5, 12, 19 @ 6:30 pm Thur., Jun 7, 14, 21 @ 10:15 am

Stories! Music! Crafts and other fun activities for children age 3 - 5 and their caregivers.

Bike Safety | Wed., Jun 6 @ 10:30 am - noon Kids of all ages can learn safety tips from friendly Chillicothe PD bicycle officers. Bring your bike to try out an obstacle course! From 11:30 am—noon, anyone can register their bikes with the police dept. in case they get lost or stolen (parent must be present for registration of child’s bike). If you like, you may fill out a registration form ahead of time and bring it with you: chillicothepd.org/bike-registry.

Ozobots | Thur., Jun 7 & 21 @ 3:30 pm

Ozobots are small smart robots that you can program. Learn how an Ozobot works, and see what you can get an Ozobot to do!

Story Tots Story Time | Fri., Jun 8, 15, 22 @ 10 am Caregivers are invited to bring children age 18 months to 35 months for a short program followed by open play time.

Sign & Sing Story Time Mon., Jun 11 & 25 @ 10:30 am Join Abbey Cook of Communication Junction for a 30-minute interactive story time, filled with stories, songs, movement, and bubbles. Ages 0 - 5. Sponsored by Midwest Joinery Inc. of Lacon.

Lego Club | Wed., Jun 13 & 27 @ 3:45 pm

Bring your friends and your imagination!

Makey Makey | Thur., Jun 14 @ 3:30 pm

You can use Makey Makeys to get your computer to obey commands using a banana, a piece of tinfoil, or any one of a wide range of objects. Try it out for yourself!

Origami & Challenge Origami | Wed., Jun 20 3:30 pm—Make amazing things with just a piece of paper! 4:30 pm—Challenge session: trickier models for more experienced folders.

Sensory Friendly Film—Moana | Thur., Jun 21 @ 1 pm The room will be lighter, the volume lower, and audience members are welcome to move around, talk, and sing. The intended audience is children with special needs accompanied by siblings and caregivers, but everyone is welcome. Attendees may bring fidgets and snacks from home. Some fidgets and several pairs of noise canceling ear muffs will be available.

Civil War Fathers Mon., Jun 11 @ 1:30 pm Thur., Jun 14 @ 6 pm You have two chances to hear nationally recognized author Tim Pletkovich speak about his book, Civil War Fathers: Sons of the Civil War in World War II. The book profiles World War II veterans whose fathers fought eighty years earlier in the American Civil War. One of their fathers actually met Lincoln! Copies of the book will be available for purchase ($25). The presentation is free and open to all ages.

Storytime for Grown-ups | Thur., Jun 14 @ 1:30 pm Join us at Evergreen Senior Living for an hour of stories, read aloud for your enjoyment. Feel free to bring coloring books, knitting, or other quiet activities to work on while you listen. Grown-ups of all ages welcome!

Saturday Game Day | Jun 16 @ 12 - 4 pm

Tabletop and strategy game lovers of all ages are invited to join us for an afternoon of your favorite games, including King of Tokyo, Ticket to Ride, and Settlers of Catan! Play one of the library's many strategy games or bring your favorites from home. You'll also have the opportunity to create a character and join the library's ongoing Pathfinder campaign. Pizza and snacks provided for donation. Outside food encouraged!

Remember When… | Tue., Jun 19 @ 1pm Hosted at Evergreen Senior Living. Remember when... roller skates had keys, gas and bacon were rationed, and cell phones hadn't been invented? Take a stroll down memory lane with us each month and reminisce as we enjoy coffee and conversation. Occasionally, we’ll be joined by grade school students eager to hear stories and ask questions. This month, we'll share recollections of travel & vacations.

*Phoneography | Thur., Jun 21 @ 6:00 – 7:30 pm Learn techniques for taking great photos on the go with your mobile device. Julie Dodge of Peoria Camera Club will be our guide, and will also share tips for editing and applying special effects. Registration requested but not required.

Concert: Tom Sharpe | Sun., Jul 8 @ 2:30 pm Tom Sharpe, drummer for Mannheim Steamroller, presents a unique and exciting solo symphony that blends classical and world music with a wide variety of instrumentation and percussive rhythms. A sonic and visual feast for the senses!

The Physics of Science Fiction: Time Travel & Beyond Mon., Jul 9 @ 6 pm Time travel is a thing of fiction… or is it? Dr. Jose Lozano (Bradley University) leads us on a journey through time travel in pop culture, exploring paradoxes, examining what time is and how it’s measured, and venturing through space-time and the fourth dimension. Along the way, we’ll bump into Einstein and his ideas on special and general relativity, and we’ll consider the feasibility of time travel (wait, really??).
