Her letters come the same way every time: a card with a verse of scripture, an encouraging note and about $50 in cash. I say about because the bills are mostly fives and tens, and the totals vary. The encouraging note also varies a little, but expresses the same sentiment: “A beautiful place – please give this to the children.” When I got the first note a number of years ago, I was a little puzzled by the intent, so I called her and asked what exactly she wanted me to do. In that conversation I got her story: “I was a nurse in hospitals for many years. I worked many places, but my favorite was helping with the delivery of babies. I never got tired of seeing the joy on the mothers’ faces. Childbirth is risky, and I also saw more than my share of heartache. So whenever we’ve had a grandbaby born into my family (now great grandbaby!), I always make sure I give some extra offering on Sunday for the joy of our family. But I always send a little something to you folks, because I remember those who lost children as well. So that’s why I say please give that money to the children.” In the midst of the tragedy that surrounds the loss of a child, we at Hills of Rest are at the same time encouraged by the outpouring of support for those who have lost a minor child. Here is a list of some of the ways we also help grieving families at Hills of Rest. Some of these things we have done for years, some of them we have just added: • No cost space and interment for babies under the age of one. • Collaboration with Sanford Children’s Pediatric Palliative Care for service, care and support of families in need. • A free children/grandchildren rider up to $5,000 through Homesteaders Life Insurance Company for adults who have an existing policy or are looking for burial insurance. • Free professional funeral services for all minor children through George Boom Funeral Home or Miller Funeral Home. And if you are looking for ways you can help, our foundation is blessed by many people like yourself who donate for the placing of markers on unmarked children’s graves. If you would like more information about that, contact Shelley at 338-6551. While no parent would ever want to use these gifts of compassion, many find them especially meaningful and healing during a difficult time. If you are one of the people who has been a part of that healing compassion, with all of my heart I thank you. Her letters come the same way every time: a card with a verse of

scripture, an encouraging note and about $50 in cash. I say about because

the bills are mostly fives and tens, and the totals vary.

The encouraging note also varies a little, but expresses the same

sentiment:

“A beautiful place – please give this to the children.”

When I got the first note a number of years ago, I was a little puzzled by

the intent, so I called her and asked what exactly she wanted me to do. In

that conversation I got her story:

“I was a nurse in hospitals for many years. I worked many places, but

my favorite was helping with the delivery of babies. I never got tired of

seeing the joy on the mothers’ faces. Childbirth is risky, and I also saw more

than my share of heartache. So whenever we’ve had a grandbaby born into

my family (now great

grandbaby!), I always make sure

I give some extra offering on

Sunday for the joy of our family.

But I always send a little

something to you folks, because

I remember those who lost

children as well. So that’s why I

say please give that money to

the children.”

In the midst of the tragedy that

surrounds the loss of a child, we

at Hills of Rest are at the same

time encouraged by the

outpouring of support for those who have lost a minor child.

Here is a list of some of the ways we also help grieving families at Hills

of Rest. Some of these things we have done for years, some of them we

have just added:

• No cost space and interment for babies under the age of one.

• Collaboration with Sanford Children’s Pediatric Palliative Care for

service, care and support of families in need.

• A free children/grandchildren rider up to $5,000 through Homesteaders

Life Insurance Company for adults who have an existing policy or are

looking for burial insurance.

• Free professional funeral services for all minor children through George

Boom Funeral Home or Miller Funeral Home.

And if you are looking for ways you can help, our foundation is blessed

by many people like yourself who donate for the placing of markers on

unmarked children’s graves. If you would like more

information about that, contact Shelley at 338-6551.

While no parent would ever want to use these gifts of

compassion, many find them especially meaningful and

healing during a difficult time.

If you are one of the people who has

been a part of that healing compassion,

with all of my heart I thank you.

“I had no idea” is almost always the response people have when they

are told all of the different kinds of cremation interment options we have

at Hills of Rest.

“We literally have a price

range between three hundred

and three million dollars,”

says Shelley Roemeling,

Advance Planner at Hills of

Rest Cemetery. “We offer

cremation burial, an ossuary,

indoor and outdoor niches,

and private family estates in

our cremation garden. We have the largest variety of memorialization

options to fit any need in the region.”

Feel free to drive around our grounds or stop by the office for a tour, or

call and ask for a brochure. Our number is 338-6551.

Four-legged

athletes like Spot,

the Wonderdog,

get aches and

pains like anyone

else. We are

happy to have him up and “running.” A

gimpy right front wrist has kept him from

his ordinary rounds. Rehab in the cab of

Clinton’s truck has allowed it time to

heal – good to have you back, Spot!

We remember the victims of 9/11 and the sacrifice of the first responders.

Need a little extra income? We are looking for 3-5 people who would like to lead

funeral processions into Hills of Rest Cemetery. if you are interested, please contact the

Hills of Rest office at (605) 338-6551.

Sometimes you do someone a favor, and it turns out they

helped you more than you helped them. Many years ago, we

helped a kid named Derek Maassen earn some money while he

went to college. His enthusiasm and hard work ethic has paid

us back dividends over the years – he has willingly come back

to help us in busy times even though he is fully employed and

has a busy home life. We cannot take credit for who he has

become, but we’d like to! Thanks, Derek!

Thank You, Derek Maassen!
