NZTC STRENGTHENS EDUCATION RELATIONSHIPS IN CHINA

New Zealand Tertiary College’s relationship with Fujian Preschool Education College continued to strengthen as the partnership celebrated their second annual graduation ceremony in Fuzhou, China, in June.

NZTC has been collaborating with the Fujian Preschool Education College and education agency China Liberal Technology Development Company Limited since 2013 to support early childhood teacher education in China through the Sino-NZ Cooperation Program.

After the inaugural graduation of 142 students last year, a further 76 students were celebrated this year after completing a New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) approved Certificate in Early Childhood Teaching (Level 6) alongside a local Chinese early childhood education diploma qualification.

“Our celebration today is a symbol of the rich relationships that have navigated oceans, languages and cultures between New Zealand and China to come together due to our shared commitment to the education of teachers of young children,” said NZTC Chief Executive Selena Fox.

Representative graduate speaker Lan Wang furthered this sentiment in sharing, “In this cooperation program we are able to communicate and exchange different knowledge with New Zealand local teachers and students.”

Throughout the years, NZTC academic staff have visited Fuzhou to support students studying towards their internationally recognised NZTC qualification.

“During the time of study, many outstanding teachers in the field of early childhood education came to our school and taught us relevant knowledge. We were provided with hands-on experience in foreign teaching methods based on expression and discussion,” said Wang.

“In these three years we have learned so much, becoming open-minded and strong. With teachers’ guidance and our efforts, we made big progress in our English level, academic performance and our professional ability increased rapidly.”

Education New Zealand’s Regional Director for Greater China Alexandra Grace attended the ceremony to support the educational relationship and NZTC’s initiatives in China.

“Relationships between countries are shaped by leaders, but developed by the people. As graduates of this program you are now dual ambassadors both for China and for New Zealand. You hold in your hands, and in your hearts, and in your minds, an understanding of both our countries, which is necessary to take the New Zealand – China relationship to greater heights still,” said Grace.

Graduates now have the opportunity to further their study by completing a bachelor’s degree in New Zealand with NZTC.

New Zealand Tertiary College students in Sri Lanka received a first-hand experience of New Zealand’s early childhood curriculum, Te Whāriki, during a visit from the NZTC India team.

NZTC India lecturer Akshada Chitre hosted a workshop for NZTC students in Colombo about the curriculum, which provides a framework of principles and strands that support teachers in early childhood settings to work in partnership with parents, whānau and the community so children can develop into confident and competent learners.

“The workshop helped the students to learn how to apply Te Whāriki in their current roles as early childhood educators. Sharing

their experiences and examples helped in creating a community of learners that benefited from the workshop as well as each other,” said Akshada.

Students who attended are busy studying towards qualifications ranging from certificate to degree level in Sri Lanka, with some planning to continue and complete their studies in New Zealand.

Having started their study journey with NZTC Global, students have the opportunity to follow pathways into higher level study with the college in New Zealand, such as the Graduate Diploma in Teaching (ECE) and the Bachelor of Teaching (ECE), which enable graduates to apply for NZ Teacher Registration.

Savindi Goonatillake, who is studying a Bachelor of Education (ECE), said, “The workshop was really enjoyable and I learned a lot of new things. To name a few, I learned how to handle parents and students in difficult situations, different strategies of teaching, and about novel teaching materials.”

As an online student working towards a Certificate in Early Childhood Teaching (Level 6), Ann Sachini Piumica Pulukkutty Arachchige Don found the workshop very informative. “We got the opportunity to learn about practical knowledge in the classroom and understand new things in the field of early childhood education,” said Ann.

“We enjoyed the practical experiences and now know how important they are for practice with little children,” said Pramila Rathnayake Mudiyanselage, a Certificate in Early Childhood Teaching (Level 6) student. “We sang, danced, acted dramas and played, having fun while learning how to teach. I am very happy with the workshop.”

The NZTC India team recently held a workshop for Sri Lankan students.
