Currently there is a transition from the NZTC to EDUCANZ (Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand). The legislation has passed through Parliament and EDUCANZ should be operational from the 1st of July this year.

They will tasked with maintenance of the register of teachers, rewriting the code of ethics (within two years), align the standards for qualifications (Teacher College), and establish and maintain the RTC’s.

At least five candidates from this nomination process will be appointed by the Minister, with the balance being selected by the Minister.

To be eligible for full registration you must have four things…
1. Good character,2. Professionally developed over last three years,3. Satisfactory recent service, and,4. Been meaningfully assessed against the 12RTC’s
Good Character means…• Clear criminal history.• Making sound judgements in regards to relationships in and out
of classroom. • Being able to satisfactorily be ‘in loco parentis’

Cases – from NZTC Disciplinary Tribunal

Case One – Teacher moonlighted as a foreign exchange dealer. Went overseas and traded in forex. Lost money and then fraudulently borrowed money to cover losses. Found guilty by the SFO. Wants to come back to teaching.

Case Two – Teacher brought recreational drugs to school and gave them to another teacher (who had requested them).

Case Three – Teacher blew 563 mg/l of breath (limit of 400) in 2012. Got conviction of drink driving. Didn’t declare it in registration paperwork in 2014.

Case Four – Teacher (and Principal) on Facebook; a) swore, b) disclosed personal information, c) took role of councillor with a student.

Case Five – Teacher convicted of social welfare fraud (kept claiming unemployment benefit whilst working).

Case Six – Teacher presented on CV for job credentials that she didn’t have. No Issue or Censure or Cancel Registration

Case Seven – Teacher changed assessment work of student to improve grades. Missed moderation dates and removed negative evidence from work of students.

Case Eight – Student ran away from a bad home environment. Came to the teachers house and spent several nights there.

FYI – all eight of these cases resulted in the cancelation of the teachers registration.
