The NZTA and iwi have formally adopted a dual name for the Puhoi to Wellsford RoNS.
The project is now known as Ara Tūhono – Puhoi to Wellsford Road of National Significance. Ara Tūhono means a
connecting pathway.
The name reflects the route’s objectives of improving transport connections between Auckland and Northland. Ara
Tūhono refers to what this new highway is all about – making journeys for people and freight between our two regions
easier, safer and more reliable.
Adopting Ara Tūhono – Puhoi to Wellsford reflects positive collaboration between the NZTA and Hōkai Nuku – an alliance
representing 5 iwi and hapu north of Auckland.
Hōkai Nuku’s vice chair, Tame te Rangi, says Maori recognised the importance of the RoNS project.
"When you have lived at the northern end of the state highway network, you understand that it is more than just a road to
Auckland – it is a direct route, a gateway, to the rest of the world."
Ara Tūhono – Puhoi to Wellsford was formally adopted at a ceremony at Orewa attended by NZTA, leaders from Hōkai
Nuku and Auckland City representatives.
Based on current revenue forecasts, the Puhoi to Wellsford RoNS is due to be completed in 2017/18, following a five year
construction period.
