F = Fine aggregate. Any natural deposit of unconsolidated sand.GFM = Gravel fines, manufactured. Any natural deposit of gravel that is crushed into sand sized particles.LFM = Lightweight fines, manufactured. Lightweight aggregate (such as expanded shale) crushed into sand sized particles.RFM = Rock fines, manufactured. Quarried bedrock/ledgerock crushed into sand sized particles. RSFM = Rock (select) fines, manufactured. Selectively quarried rock crushed into sand sized particles.G = Gravel. Any natural deposit of unconsolidated gravel.L = Lightweight aggregate. Typically a thermally expanded shale that is vitrified and has high porosity and low specific gravity.R = Rock (also known as bedrock, stone, or ledgerock).
RS = Rock (select). Selectively quarried rock, to include or exclude a specific different lithology that is present at the source. Used when a bedrock quarry contains multiple rock units that have different qualities or end-use restrictions.
S = Slag. By-product of metal smelting.Example A: 01-001GFM: Region 1 source, number 001, fine aggregate (sand sized) manufactured as a by-product from gravel crushing operations.Example B: 06-940RS: Region 6 source, number 940, selectively quarried bedrock which is a specific lithology. An example is a sandy limestone (high in silica) which is distinct from an adjacent layer of pure limestone. Department test number. The letter "C" after the test number denotes crushed gravel; "S" after the test number denotes selective quarrying operation.Example A: 18AR 001S = 2018 (Year Sampled) AR (Aggregate, Rock) test number 001. Selectively quarried.Example B: 18AG 999C = 2018 (Year Sampled) AG (Aggregate, Gravel) test number 999. Crushed gravel.Example C: 18AF 001 = 2018 (Year Sampled) AF (Aggregate, Fine) test number 001.Non-Carbonates tend to resist polishing and are typically suitable for pavement friction-demand applications.Any primary lithology that does not include Limestone, Dolomite, or Marble can be considered a Non-Carbonate lithology.Common Non-Carbonates include sandstone, traprock, and granite.Carbonates tend to polish at a faster rate than non-carbonates. Depending on the amount of acid insoluble residue and degree of alteration from calcium-rich to magnesium rich, carbonate rocks may or may not be suitable for pavement friction-demand applications. Consult project documents for pavement friction-demand applications. All Limestones, Dolomites, and Marbles are considered Carbonate lithologies.Note: Carbonate sources having Acid Insoluble Residue in excess of 20% will include notation in the source listing to designate them as High A.I.R rock to assist in aggregate selection for friction-demand applications.Gravels (Multiple lithologies in unconsolidated deposits)Consult project documents for pavement friction-demand applications.Crushed Gravel - The percent of non-carbonate particles determines a gravel source's suitability for pavement friction-demand applications. For use in pavement or concrete, NYSDOT requires a minimum percentage of crushed particles having broken, angular faces. For #2 sized coarse aggregate (generally between ½ inch and 1 inch), a minimum of 75% of the particles must be crushed. For #1 sized coarse aggregate (generally between ¼ inch and ½ inch), a minimum of 85% of the particles must be crushed.Screened Gravel is the term used to denote uncrushed or inadequately crushed (generally round) gravel and is not acceptable for use in Portland cement concrete or bituminous concrete on NYSDOT projects.
% Non-Carbonate (Gravel)
% Non-Carbonate material in gravel. These values are determined from visual petrographic analysis and used for friction-provision determinations on gravel coarse aggregate. Conservative values from each aggregate source's testing history are shown.
AIR Acid Insoluble Residue is the portion of an aggregate sample not dissolved in hydrochloric acid. Used for friction-provision determinations on carbonate bedrock coarse aggregate, and all fine aggregate.
Values shown in the NYSDOT List of Approved Aggregate Sources are from biennial samples tested in the NYSDOT Central Laboratories. When designing mixes, use specific gravities representative of current aggregate production.
Bulk SSD: Specific gravity measured under water saturated, surface dry conditions. Includes the volume and the mass of any water-filled voids. Used in Portland cement concrete mix design.Bulk Dry: Specific gravity measured under completely dried conditions. Includes the volume but not the mass of any void spaces within the aggregate particles. Used in hot mix asphalt (HMA) formula design.Apparent: Specific gravity not including the volume or mass of any void spaces within the aggregate particles. Used in bituminous concrete (asphalt) mix design. For certain aggregates, the specific gravities can be highly variable and must be monitored frequently for proper mix design adjustments to ensure performance.
Absorption (%) Measure of the amount of water that can be absorbed by the aggregate. Used in determining appropriate water/cement ratios in Portland cement concrete and asphalt binder calculations.Ballast Rating Railroad ballast classification. Based on American Railway Engineering Maintenance-of-Way Association specifications.
The ASR potential is based on petrographic determinations on the amount of chert in non-carbonate rocks or the percent insoluble residue in carbonate rocks.
Static Stockpile OnlyThis designation indicates only a specific stockpile of aggregate is approved for use in NYSDOT projects based on test results and individual pile acceptance. Static stockpiles are numbered and photographed and approval expires upon depletion. Producers must report stockpile depletion and end-use application to the NYSDOT Regional Materials Engineer and seek new approvals on new stockpiles.
Redundant Restrictions
End-use retsrictions are assigned based on test results and/or processing operations and may be added or removed as appropriate. This is why some apparently redundant restrictions are shown, such as "Not for Portland Cement Concrete" (for soundness test results) along with "Screened Gravel Only" which implies Not for Portland Cement Concrete. If processing operations change to meet crushing requirements, then the Screened Gravel Only restriction could be removed but the "Not for Concrete" restriction would remain. Likewise for ASR. The ASR restriction is based on petrographics, while the Not for Concrete restriction is based on soundness testing.
ASR Potential
