Happy New Year Capital Zone Members! I hope 2011 has been a good

year thus far for all of you. It has been a busy start to the New Year as we make

our preparations for the Capital Zone Conference on Saturday, March 5th at Nis-

kayuna High School. Yes, you read that correctly, Saturday. It is our hope that

by having the conference on a Saturday that many people will be able to attend

and not have to worry about district constraints or budget concerns. This particu-

lar Saturday falls in between sports seasons, so many of you will not be impacted

by practices, games, or other coaching commitments. If you have checked out the

conference registration through C-Vent on the NYS AHPERD website, you will

also notice that the registration fees have been greatly reduced to make this impor-

tant professional development experience more affordable for all of you. Other

changes that have been made this year include a conference/membership package

for first time members. For a fee of $110.00, a first time member can pay for a

one year membership and the zone conference all in one. This year we are also

opening the conference up to non NYS AHPERD members. It is our hope that

many people will take advantage of the first time membership package or re-join

as a member of NYS AHPERD. The conference is scheduled to commence at

1:00pm, leaving a good portion of the day to do all those important weekend

tasks. At the close of the conference, participants will be able to pick up a certifi-

cate for professional development hours to bring back to their respective districts.

Although we have made many changes to this years’ conference, one thing that

hasn’t changed is the high quality and variety of workshops. There is truly some-

thing for everyone. I would like to give my sincere thanks to the Conference

Planning Committee (Carol Atkins, JoAnn Sabourin, and Barb Wurz) for the

hours of time and dedication to bring us another high quality conference.

This past Sunday, February 6th was the annual Capital Zone Secondary Leadership Awards Ceremony at the Century House.

This year we honored 50 seniors from 27 different districts in the capital region. Students were selected based on their leadership,

scholarship, sportsmanship, love and dedication to fitness and health, and community service. I was in awe of the incredible group of

seniors selected this year. I would like to congratulate them and their families for this honor. I would also like to congratulate and

thank Capital Zone Past President, Marc Vachon for again organizing and putting together a great day for all. Thank you also to the

many volunteers who helped make this day a great success.

Another highly successful and well attended NYS AHPERD state conference was held this past November at the Turning

Stone Casino in Verona, NY. It was great to see so many familiar Capital Zone faces. I would like to congratulate our very own Anne

Downes, a PE teacher in the Warrensburg School District. Anne was awarded the Capital Zone Amazing People award. This award is

very well deserved for her many contributions to the Capital Zone and the profession as a whole. I would also like to congratulate and

thank Anne for her willingness to step in as Secretary of the Capital Zone and I would like to congratulate Carol Atkins from the Scotia

-Glenville School District for being formally appointed as President Elect of the Capital Zone. I am thrilled that the Capital Zone will

be in such good hands with Carol’s innovation, leadership, and attention to detail.

The months ahead will be busy and exciting ones as we not only prepare for the conference but also our annual Sandra G.

Morley Elementary/Middle School Physical Education Leadership Awards in May at HVCC. This great event honors hundreds of

Capital Region youth. More information about this event can be found in this newsletter and will be sent to schools soon.

None of these great events could happen with out the help of many people. Please consider ways that you can lend a hand to

help with a large or small task for the many important events that the Capital Zone hosts or offers to its members at large. Also, con-

sider attending a zone meeting. Meeting dates are listed in this newsletter along with the meeting location and time. It is imperative

now more than ever for our zone to remain strong and united through difficult budget times and program and athletic cuts. The zone

and NYS AHPERD are here to support you and make sure that you are able to deliver the quality Health, PE, Recreation, and Dance

programs that our young people deserve.

I hope that you enjoy the winter addition of this newsletter. Thank you to Jake Cowell and Eric Tabin for taking over the zone

newsletter. The newsletter is a vital way for members to stay current with events in the zone and at the state level. I hope that the com-

ing months are good ones for you and hope to see many of you at the upcoming zone conference or the Elementary/Middle School

Leadership Awards.

Yours on Good Health,

Lonnie Wilson

Secondary Leadership Awards On Super Bowl Sunday, February 6th the Capital Zone NYS AHPERD honored 49 students from 25 area

schools at the 12th Annual Secondary Leadership Awards. The awards took place at 2 P.M at the Century House

in Latham, NY. 1 male and 1 female student from each school were nominated by the Physical Education Staff at

their schools. In order to receive the award students must exhibit a love for Physical Education as well as dem-

onstrate leadership, strong academics, and involvement in a variety of extracurricular activities such as clubs

and sports. This year the NYS AHPERD Secondary Section President, Mrs. Murphee Hayes from Whitney Point,

NY offered a wonderful spot as the guest speaker. Her message was clear that a healthy active lifestyle is the

staple to a strong family, community, and career. The Capital Zone would like to thank Murphee for speaking at

the awards and once again offer congratulations to all of the 2011 Secondary Leadership Award recipients! A

big thank you goes out to Mr. Robert Collen, Mr. Robert Oates, Mrs. Wendy O’Connor, Ms. Carol Atkins, Ms.

Janet Tully, Mrs. Allison Relyea, and Ms. Sandra Morley for helping to make this afternoon possible.

Mayfield Elementary School took part in Jump Rope for Heart for the second year in a row.

When participating in the Jump Rope for Heart all donations go to the American Heart Associa-

tion. AHA uses the money raised to help pay for new medicines for kids with special hearts and to

help doctors discover new medicines and treatments. Last year, Mayfield students were able to raise

$6,500 for this great cause. This year, Mayfield set a goal of raising $7,500 dollars. Our students

and families came through above and beyond that goal raising an outstanding $8,500 dollars.

The event took place over two days, January 27th and 28th.

Mayfield Elementary Physical Education teachers Hillary Cool and

Brian Moore as well as Assistant Principal Abbey North planned

and coordinated the event. During their physical education class

time, students were grouped and given three minutes at each sta-

tion and then rotated to the next. The stations comprised of jump

roping, potato sack races, long rope, jumping for height, jumping

for distance, face painting, tinkling, pogo sticks, and creating a

dance. At the duration of each class the entire group performed

the dance that they learned at one of the stations.

The event could not have run more smoothly without the tremendous outpouring of volunteers.

Parents, as well as students from the high school, came in each day and helped run

stations. Another highlight of the event was Principal Nick Criscone and Assistant

Principal Abbey North volunteered themselves to be made into human ice cream sun-

daes. During each lunch period students were able to buy ice cream, sprinkles and

chocolate syrup to dump onto our brave principals. The students were able to pur-

chase each toping for a quarter. Of the $8,500 dollars raised, $635 of it came from

the ice cream sundaes!

Mayfield is a generous school and has a great community supporting it. Each year we can only

hope to match the money we were able to raise this year. Stewarts donated ice cream for our human

sundaes and Subway donated food for all of our volunteers.

Advocating for You Here are some of the ways NYS AHPERD and Capital Zone AHPERD are

advocating for you and how you can get involved

+ Currently New York State Department of Education is collecting data on “Student Col-lege and Workforce Readiness”. They are asking for as many people as possible to fill out sur-veys and attend forums to gather information and opinions on student graduation requirements go-ing into the future; note, if registration for your regional forum is required, the seats are filling up quickly and you will want to register early! The importance of filling out this survey and registering for the scheduled meetings is that part of the conversation being raised has to do with providing more flexibility in how students might satisfy graduation requirements. As always, the word flexibil-ity and the potential elimination of seat time, could put our programs in question.

-Here is the link to the survey: http://www.nyscoss.org/pdf/upload/BOARDOFREGENTSREGIONALFORUMSONCOLLEGEANDCAREERREADINESSSCHEDULE.pdf

-If you would like a copy of the minutes from the Albany meeting that took place last month please email me, Jacob Colwell at [email protected] or Rachel Yamin, the Administrative Assistant to the District Superintendent of Capital Region BO-CES at [email protected] + NYS AHPERD is getting involved with the “Lets Move” campaign of First Lady Michelle Obama. We are creating a multimedia presentation that demonstrates and explains how a quality physical education class promotes healthy lifestyles in it’s students and how Health and Physical Education Teachers are the front line of defense in the war against childhood obesity in America. This presentation is being filmed and created right here in the capital district at Woodland Hill Mon-tessori School in North Greenbush. -To get involved with the project email me at [email protected] -To learn more about the “Let’s Move” campaign visit http://www.letsmove.gov/ + Many experts believe that, with the success of the current “Race to the Top” battle for federal funding, NYS will continue to put a greater focus on testing in evaluating teachers. To pre-pare for this potential change and to create a better understanding of the success of our programs, NYS AHPERD is working on creating an Elementary and Middle School P.E. Profile. This col-lective assessment will align with the commencement level P.E. Profile that is already recognized throughout the state as a valid program assessment. The Elementary and Middle School level as-sessments still need to be perfected and we are looking for working teachers to try them out and provide feedback. If you are interested in trying out these assessments contact Ed Kupiec at [email protected]

Help Wanted! In the spring of third grade Joe told

us that his family would be moving to a new

school up north, to be near the Great Sacan-

daga Lake, an area where his Dad had grown up

and he had grown to love. His first concern

was: “What if they don’t have Fitness Club?”

My prompt response to him was : “You can talk

with your new PE teachers and see if you can

start one!”

In the fall of the following year

Northville physical education teacher Jon

Goodemote states “Joseph was very motivated

to tell me about the fitness club from his

other school. He was very organized and did a

great job explaining what it was and how to

get started. It has exploded at our school and

everyone is talking about it.” The news even

made the Northville Central School web page
