Outdoors in New York City is a quarterly newsletter that highlights activities and events from NYC Parks. This issue focuses on ways to stay active and enjoy our parks throughout the winter.

Combat the winter doldrums with a hike, lecture, wildlife viewing, monthly club meeting, or self-guided winter bingo (see page 8). For the three coldest months of the year you can stay active, healthy, and informed.

There are so many reasons to attend a Ranger program: Hiking in the winter won’t just help you warm up, it’s also a great way to find solitude or a quiet moment in our parks. NYC Parks manages 30,000 acres for you to explore, and the winter is a great time to brush up on local city history, take a tour, or look for wildlife in a quiet forest or placid, icy shorefront with us!

White-Tailed DeerWhite-tailed deer are an important part of New York State’s rich ecosystem and are greatly valued by many New Yorkers. These city dwellers can be found browsing in forested parks in Staten Island and The Bronx.

Saturday Jan. 28 // Living with White-tailed DeerGreenbelt Nature Center // 1:00 p.m.

Owls Leafl ess trees provide perfect viewing opportunities of some resident and migrating owl species. Eastern Screech Owls, Great Horned Owls, and Saw Whet Owls call our parks home for the winter. These birds of prey are most active at dusk while hunting for their next meal.

Sunday Feb. 11 // Birding: Owls Inwood Hill Park // 5:00 p.m.

Seals Winter is a great time to explore the shoreline for seals and other marine wildlife. This time of year, native Harbor Seals bask rejoicing in the cold temperatures. Catch a glimpse of these marine mammals during low tide on rocky outcroppings off the shores of the city.

Saturday, Feb. 10 // Daylight Hike Pelham Bay Park // 2:00 p.m.Orchard Beach Nature Center,Section 2 of Orchard Beach

Nocturnal Wildlife As the sun sets earlier, many crepuscular and nocturnal animals come out sooner for your viewing pleasure. A quiet guided hike is the best way to try to locate these elusive creatures. Night herons, bats, and raccoons are just some of the creatures of the night that might appear in our parks.

Sunday, March 11 // Nocturnal Hike Flushing Meadows Corona Park // 7:00 p.m.

AstronomyThe colder winter clears the night sky of clouds and creates ideal conditions for stargazing.Meteors, constellations, planets, and the many phases of the moon will be visible through a telescope with a trained eye.

Sunday, Jan. 14 // Astronomy: The Night Sky Marine Park // 6:00 p.m.

Winter Bingo: Signs of WildlifeThough we may not always spot them in the wild, wildlife leave plenty of clues that let us know they are using our parks for food, water, and shelter—even during the coldest winter months!

Bring this page and a pencil on your next adventure in a park. As you explore, look high and low for the clues listed below, and draw a picture of each clue you observe. Can you complete three in a row and become a Winter Wildlife Watcher?
