Monitoring of RARS ATOVS
• We compare each pass with the equivalent global data from NOAA or EUMETSAT
• Two methods of reporting: 1. Emails to station operators – daily summary and
passes with warnings 2. NWPSAF monitoring web page

We monitor “level 1d” – so if one AMSU channel is missing then all are reported as missing

Example of a pass with warnings in the AMSU window channels When this happens, recommended to check the navigation difference – OK in this case.

Satellites
• NOAA-15 – very few stations receiving it, due to poor signal strength. Only the NOAA/EARS stations with large dishes. 17:30 E.C.T
• NOAA-16 and 17 – decommissioned
• NOAA-18 – good. Drifting into late afternoon orbit, close to NOAA-15. 17:00 E.C.T.
• NOAA-19 – good. 14:00 E.C.T.
• Metop-A – limitations on the AHRPT service. Same orbital plane as Metop-B.
• Metop-B – good. 21:30 E.C.T.

Observations on stations
The following stations need to apply updates to the AMSU calibration files. Upgrading to latest version of AAPP is recommended:
• Singapore NOAA-18: AMSU 8 missing NOAA-19: AMSU 1 and 8 missing No direct contact with the station
• Hong Kong NOAA-18: AMSU 8 missing
• Chile NOAA-19: AMSU 1 and 8 missing CONAE have this in hand
Note: there have been some issues with instability in NOAA-18 AMSU channel 9, which cause monitoring warnings. Currently stable.

Recently added stations
• Tahiti Good performance We are receiving via GTS
• New Delhi and Chennai Timeliness is very poor for the data we have received in the
past from New Delhi via GTS.
e.g. Best 79min, worst 228min in the example earlier
None from Chennai, but may be an issue with GTS routing. We are trying to get this resolved.
