  • 5 SAP NetWeaver Business ClientSAP NetWeaver Business Client (NWBC) is a user interface (UI) that presents a singleentry point to different SAP business applications and technologies. It is a high-fidelity shellthat integrates various UI technologies and design generations aimed at a more efficient, intuitive, and complete user experience over different UI technologies. Within the SAPNetWeaver Business Client, users can move seamlessly between Web Dynpro and SAP GUItransactions.

The SAP NetWeaver Business Client enables direct connectivity to the ABAP back-endsystem and PFCG role repository centrally holding SAP GUI, Web Dynpro and various Webcontent applications. NWBC provides role-based access to applications either using the portalor directly using PFCG roles.

This documentation is relevant only for SAP NetWeaver Business Client for Desktop4.0, the Microsoft-Windows-based version of NWBC.

The graphics in the following documentation are examples of prototypes only. Thedesign of NWBC is constantly developing. For this reason, the UIs may vary fordifferent versions of SAP NetWeaver Business Client.

More InformationThe security and configuration settings that are described in the documentation for SAPNetWeaver Business Client 3.5, in particular in chapter 7 Security Aspects, are also relevantfor SAP NetWeaver Business Client version 4.0. We highly recommend that you read thedocumentation for SAP NetWeaver Business Client 3.5.

  • 6 1 What's NewThis is an overview of the new features and functions that are available with SAP NetWeaverBusiness Client (NWBC) 4.0. It includes Release Notes that describe what is new orenhanced, and what has been changed or deleted since the last release.

Shell (Enhanced)As of NWBC 4.0 the shell design has been optimized to give maximum space to theapplication and content (by delegating client functionality to the content area). The shell layoutconsists of the header area, the tab bar, the toolbar, and the integrated search and quicknavigation function. Users can open the menu from the (Menu) icon in the top left corner ofthe header area.

For more information, see Overview [Page 11].

Theme (Enhanced)As of NWBC 4.0 the desktop client version is by default rendered in the Corbu design, whichis a theme with a light, neutral design and enlarged resolution for better readability. Users cancustomize the appearance of the shell by switching the theme in the personal settings. Userscan select either a dark or light flavor, which only affects the header area.

For more information, see Overview [Page 11].

Tabbed Browsing (New)As of NWBC 4.0 a tab-based navigation model (tabbed browsing), known from modernbrowsers, replaces the multi-window paradigm of previous versions. Users can open multipletabs to work on them in parallel. It is easy to switch between tabs without terminating asession.

In conjunction with this, the navigation area has been redesigned and new navigation optionsare available. The navigation area hosts the tab bar, a navigation panel by the side of thecontent area used for detailed navigation, and the integrated search and quick navigationfunction.

For more information, see Navigation [Page 31].

Tab Bar with Tab List (New)As of NWBC 4.0 users can add as many tabs as needed using the tab bar at the top of theshell. They can easily switch between tabs by selecting the tab they want to work on in thetab bar. Users can pin tabs to the tab bar (right mouse click the tab title) so they are availablethe next time they log on to the system.

The (Tab List) displays all the tab titles if more tabs are open than can be displayed in thetab bar.

For more information, see Overview [Page 11].

Taskbar with Jump List (New)As of NWBC 4.0 NWBC implements a tab-based navigation model (tabbed browsing) andprovides support for tab previews in the taskbar. If you have several tabs open, the

(NWBC) taskbar button displays a stacked symbol and a tab preview is displayed forany open tab.

  • 7For more information, see Taskbar [Page 49] and Jump List [Page 50].

Overview Pages (New)As of NWBC 4.0 these pages provide users with an overview of the navigation optionscorresponding to their typical tasks. They serve as the central point of entry to a role-basednavigation to any navigation target or work center. The following types of overview pageshave been added with this product version:

    x Index Page (New)

As of NWBC 4.0 this page displays the entire navigation structure for a user. TheIndex page is the initial page that is displayed when a user logs on to a system for thefirst time. It is pinned by default but users can unpin and close it if they want to see adifferent page as their home page.

    x New Tab Page (New)

As of NWBC 4.0 users can add New Tab pages. Each New Tab page the user opensdisplays the last opened and most frequently used navigation targets specific to theuser's roles.

For more information, see Overview Pages [Page 36].

2 OverviewThe desktop version of SAP NetWeaver Business Client (NWBC) 4.0 has a modern andsimple look and feel, and implements an easy-to-use, web-browser-like user experiencecoupled with easy navigation and a focus on content (tabbed browsing).

The figure below illustrates the main screen areas of NWBC, comprising the shell, contentarea, and the side panel:

    Screen Areas of NWBC 4.0

The desktop version allows you to adjust the appearance and settings of the business clientto meet your personal and technical requirements, for example by selecting your theme orbranding options.

The shell aims at reducing the space consumed by the client in favor of applications runningin the content area where users do their actual work. They can use the side panel to displayadditional context-sensitive information that relates to the main application. Users can openthe menu from the (Menu) icon in the header area and make system settings, customizeview and personalization options, and access the help and support functions, including theproduct documentation. The presentation of the menu as a dropdown menu also helps tosave screen space at the top of the shell.

The shell design is intentionally neutral to frame content from diverse applications andtechnologies, be it Web Dynpro or SAP GUI transactions. The shell for the desktop client isrendered in the Corbu design by default. This is a theme with a light, neutral design, andenlarged resolution for better readability. The user can customize the appearance of the shelland content area by switching the theme in the personal settings. It is possible to select eithera dark or light flavor, which only affects the header area. The high contrast theme is alsoavailable, which triggers a theme change in the client, Web Dynpro, and SAP GUI pages. Allcontent except for content embedded as Web URL is displayed with the high contrast theme.

  • 12

With a tab-based navigation model (tabbed browsing), users are now able to work on multipletabs in parallel. They can load any content into the tab rather than into a new window. Userscan switch between the tabs easily without terminating the sessions; each new tab hosts anew session. If users are working with many applications in one window at the same time, they can get an overview of all the tabs in the tab bar by displaying the tab list or with the helpof the tab previews in the task bar. The tab list displays all the tab titles if more tabs are openthan can be displayed in the tab bar. Users can display the complete list of open tabs and

quickly navigate to a selected tab by choosing the (Tab List) pushbutton in the tab bar.

It is possible to personalize a user's navigation structure by adding pages for frequently usedtransactions or applications to the Favorites or by pinning tabs so they are available when theusers logs on to a system the next time.

Users have many different options to find and launch applications. This includes navigatingfrom an overview page, from the quick launch, or from the navigation panel. The overviewpages such as the Index page and the New Tab page serve as the central point of entry to arole-based navigation.

The powerful search and quick launch capabilities of the desktop client are combined in asingle type-ahead field. Users can either start a search using a configured search provider, forexample, the Desktop Search, or they can directly start transactions or Web Dynproapplications. Search results are grouped into different search categories, for example, byresults in Favorites and Recent Items, or by results for Desktop Search and Transactions andApplications.

3 NWBC for Desktop InstallationAs an administrator, you need to perform several installation and configuration steps toensure that NWBC fully operates in an ABAP or a portal environment. Some configurationsettings described in this section are relevant in particular for end users, such aspersonalization settings.

End users must have a local installation of the business client, or they access an installationon a Windows Terminal Server. Another option is to install the NWBC front-end in anautomated process without any end user interaction. This unified procedure allowsadministrators to do the following:

x Add NWBC to an existing 7.30 SAP GUI installation server

x Collect many SAP front-end components (or front-end products) on an installationserver, and then perform installations, updates, or de-installations on workstations viaa network

All NWBC for Desktop versions can be installed in parallel. NWBC for Desktop 3.5 and 4.0are using the same admin and personal configuration files (which contain systemconnections, for example). NWBC for Desktop 3.0 configuration is migrated into NWBC forDesktop 3.5 and 4.0 configuration files the first time such a client is started unlessconfiguration files have been provided before.

3.3 Windows Terminal Server InstallationYou can install NWBC centrally on Windows Terminal Server (WTS) farms that end users canaccess.

You have to log on to the WTS as local administrator to perform the installation. Theinstallation is always done in install mode. If you switch the WTS into install mode, additionalregistry entries are maintained during the installation process, and the environment isprepared for multi-user environments. For more information, seehttp://www.msterminalservices.org/articles/Managing-User-Specific-Application-Configuration-Data-Terminal-Service-Environment.html .

For end users, NWBC works only after a domain user has logged on as administrator viaIndependent Computing Architecture (ICA) and has started the NWBC in install mode at leastonce. Usually, the local administrator can do this. As an administrator, you can install NWBCvia Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP).

The number of NWBC sessions that can be supported on a WTS server is dependent on thetypical usage pattern, for example, whether SAP GUI or Web Dynpro applications are run,and on the number of open windows. NWBC also makes extensive use of graphics, whichcan cause an additional load on the WTS servers.

After NWBC is installed, the administrator makes the configuration settings. For moreinformation, search for 3.5 Administrator Configuration in SAP Library for SAP NetWeaverBusiness Client 3.5 on SAP Help Portal at http://help.sap.com.

Prerequisitesx You have local administrator rights on the WTS to perform an installation.

x To prevent possible screen flicker issues on WTS, install and apply the Microsofthotfix 955692. For more information, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955692/en-us. The equivalent Citrix hotfix reference is CTX121354.

6 System ConnectionsIn NWBC you can have one or more connections to different servers. A connection containsall relevant data required to instruct a server to retrieve all the relevant roles for a user. SinceNWBC, as the shell, uses HTTP connections for its server communications, the connectiondata is also defined as a URL. The connection data is usually provided by the systemadministrator and must be configured.

Although you can define several connections, you can only have one connection active at atime. If you start a connection to a different system, the current session is closed and NWBCis restarted to clear all cookies that are stored in process.

    6.1 Configuring System ConnectionsProcedure

    1. Choose (Menu) Settings Connections Systems... .

    2. Enter the required data as explained in the following table:

    Setting Description

    Name(mandatory)

The name for the system connection

Connections names must be unique names.

    URL(mandatory)

The HTTP URL that is needed to connect to the server

The server name must include a fully qualified domain part as well.

The protocol is either http:// or https://.

You must provide the complete domain and extension for the server name. Forexample, for a server at SAP, the complete string would be theServer.sap.com.

If the default ports 80 for HTTP and 443 for HTTPS are not used, you can define aport.

The path is usually either /sap/bc/nwbc for an ABAP-based connection, or/irj/portal for a portal-based connection.

The complete syntax for the URL is as follows:

    http(s)://..:/

Type You can connect with NWBC either directly to a single ABAP server (connection typeApplication Server ABAP) or to a portal server (connection type Portal).

In this example scenario with one SAP Logon system and several remote systems, you can maintain the SAP GUI Logon Description not only for the SAP Logon systembut also for the remote systems. This allows you to configure load balancing on theclient side for the SAP Logon system and also for the remote systems.

NWBC connects to the server Server_A of the system SYS. The roles for this systemcomprise the following remote clients and servers:

    x System RMA, server Remote_A.domain, client 000

x System RMB, server Remote_B.domain, client 000 and client 001

  • 25

You have the following options to configure load balancing:

x To achieve SAP GUI load balancing with system SYS, maintain the SAP GUILogon Description (SYS [PUBLIC]) in the NWBC connection settings.

x To achieve SAP GUI load balancing for the remote clients and server, configure NWBC connections for all clients on all servers that are accessedwith remote roles:

    o Remote_A connection:

    URL: http://Remote_A.domain:port/nwbc

    Client 000

SAP GUI Logon Description: RMA [PUBLIC]

    o Remote_B 000 connection:

    URL: http://Remote_B.domain:port/nwbc

    Client 000

    SAP GUI Logon Description:RMB [PUBLIC]

    o Remote_B 001 connection:

    URL: http://Remote_B.domain:port/nwbc

    Client 001

SAP GUI Logon Description: RMB [PUBLIC]

x The server URL must be fully qualified with domain name.

Then configure all necessary entries in SAP Logon (RMA [PUBLIC] and RMB[PUBLIC]) and configure load balancing for them.

Comment A user-defined comment that can contain any textual information. This is typically usedto write short descriptions about the system.

9 Logging OffActivitiesWhen you have finished working with NWBC, log off by choosing (Close) in the corner atthe top of the screen or by choosing (Menu) Window Close All and Log Off .

All sessions are terminated, and all active windows and applications are closed in NWBC.

Be careful to distinguish between authentication (which allows the browser to interactwith the server) and a logoff sequence (which terminates all sessions on the server).Depending on the authentication method that is used within the browser, it is possibleto log off from the server and consequently have all sessions terminated while havingthe authentication information available within the browser (for example, when usingbrowser-supported basic authentication or when using digital certificates). Forexample, if digital certificates are used and the browser interacts with the serveragain, a new session is automatically started. Therefore, we highly recommend thatyou close the browser window after logoff.
