Good quality cattle and cattle near finished in strong demand and good to sell as always. Young cattle trade continues to be good but plainer cattle a slightly easier trade this week. Sixty five cattle sold for £1,200 or more topping at £1,390 for a Limousin steer from D & N Davis of Nateby who also sold Angus steers to £1,370. An impressive pen of six Aberdeen Angus steers from M & E Forshaw & Son of Little Town sold to £1340. Heifers topped at £1,320 for a Trio of Charolais’s from TE & A Galbraith of Crooklands Farm. Purchasers are requesting that vendors batch cattle as much as possible and it is in the vendor’s financial benefit to do so.

The edge is definitely off the Cast Cow trade, with a lot plainer entry of cattle forward at Lancaster. Leaner cows especially taking a big hit today. OTM heifers twice sold to 179.5ppk with best types of well fleshed cows still selling in excess of 140ppk. Decent types of dairy cows regularly sold between 115ppk and 120ppk.

The strong Calf trade continues at Lancaster auction with the first calf in the ring a British Blue Heifer from SH & LE Birkett of Stubb Hall selling for £415 for a

two month old. Plenty of good beef calves forward sold to a strong demand from a busy ring of buyers. British blue bulls topped at £525 from AW & AM Park &

Sons of Ellel. A consignment of good quality British Blue 8 week old calves from Kelsall and Wood of Quernmore saw bull sell between £420 and £480 with

heifers twice selling to £395. Weaned Black and White calves sold to £245 from Cote Farm Partnership whilst six week old good quality rearers sold to £180

from David and Eileen Wallbank of Tills Farm. All black and whites sold to an average of £138.

A lot more consignments of heavier lambs were forward leading to the reduced average. Heavy lambs continue to sell well at Lancaster with Suffolk and continental lambs 48kg+ selling easily in excess of £70 topping at £82 for Suffolk’s from WN & D Smith & Sons of Cockerhouse. Better types of lambs saw 44kg Texel’s from JK & BE Townley of Mearsbeck sell to £72.50.

Buyers were cautious of lean lambs with many pens of well finished continental lambs selling between £20 and £22 above their weights. More mule lambs in the auction today saw 44kg Mule from T Ayrton and Son of Yates Farm sell to £60.50 with 43kg Mule sell to £60 from JS & S Atkinson.

The Cast Ewe trade has lifted from a couple of weeks since with buyers certainly looking for cast sheep. Mule ewes sold to £74 from S Wilson and Son of Burrow Heights with strong fit mule ewes easily selling in the late sixties as an overall mule average of £64. Texel ewes topped at £86 from JK & BE Townley of Mearsbeck. A larger proportion of Swaledale ewes in the market today with better types selling in the mid to late forties and plainer ewes selling around £30.

A large percentage of medium/long term lambs generally sold £46 - £50 with smaller sorts £38 - £45.

The weekly sale of Calves had a smaller entry of 30 forward with the majority being young black and whites which sold to £150 for a 6 week old from RA & E Edmondson of High Barns with plenty at 3 to 4 weeks selling for between £80 and £105. A Couple of smart six week old Angus bulls from G Cuthbert-son of New Hutton sold to £390 and £380. Heifer calves sold to a top of £355 for a Limousin again from RA & E Edmondson of High Barns. A strong demand for calves and stirks with 60 – 80 on Thursday 6th August 2015.

A much sharper trade for all classes of Prime Lambs was experienced at NWA J36, which saw the overall market average of 168p/kg (£68.66) achieved for 1,846 sheep put before an active ringside of 10 buyers representing 20 different outlets. All were keen to secure stock.

A larger portion of heavy lambs easily sold in excess of £70 topping at £79 for Texel x from J W & T E Sharp, with heavy Suffolks £78 from T & L M Goad. Well bred lambs easily selling in excess of 170p/kg, to a top price of 185p/kg for Texel x from J & M Cockett, Suffolks to 180p/kg from DM & D Cook. Hill lambs now coming forward in greater numbers with Mules selling to £67.50 from J & J A Burrow and 175p/kg from H M Hodgson. Well finished lambs continue to sell to keenest demand, regularly achieving £22-£28 over weight for all breeds today, with lambs ranging from 29kg – 52kg. More lambs are needed each week, we have demand for 2,000 + each week.

As Cast Sheep numbers tighten nationwide, following larges numbers being sold throughout the summer, J36 enjoyed a strong trade for all types of ewes. Framey continental and Suffolk ewes sold between £90 and £97 from J & M Cockett. Continental tups sold to a top of £104 from N J Strickland & Son of The Borrans. Strong mule ewes sold between £68 and £72 with plenty of other pens easily selling into the sixties. Plain ewes are especially a good trade in comparison to fit and meated ewes. A large proportion of horned ewes in the market today, with best types selling easily into the sixties with Roughs topping at £65 and Swales at £63. Plenty of swale ewes sold around £50 and plainer types easily selling £30 plus.

1818 Auctioneers Motorbikes Results The 1940 Koehler Escoffier sold for £2400 to an internet buyer. Other highlights include A 1969 Bridgestone 90 Deluxe at £2100 and A 1957 Norton Cafe Racer having a 1964 750cc Atlas Engine which sold for £5600 (photographed)

Modern classics included a Honda CD175 twin which sold for £400 and a Montessa Honda Trials project at £340

Auctioneer Kevin Kendal said he was very pleased by the interest this auction received , which was the second specialist motorcycle auction held at Junction 36 Auction centre and their reputation for this speciality is now growing. 1818 are planning another auction in October, date to be announced.

The unsold bikes will be offered in an on line auction running from 6th to 16th August and can be viewed by appointment at J36.
