ANNIVERSARY CHAMPION SELLS FOR £1260 AT NWA J36

North West Auctions held its fortnightly sale of Store Cattle which included a show to celebrate the 3rd Anniversary of the opening of Junction 36 Rural Auction Centre. The show, which was kindly judged by Mr David Anderson of Maryport, attracted a strong entry of cattle with over 20 forward for the show. The championship rosette was awarded to a British Blue x steer from MJ & JA Winn which later sold for £1260 and was purchased by Mr J Bowling, Wigan.

Trade throughout the sale was strong for all classes with vendors leaving pleased with prices achieved. The sale topped at £1280 for a trio of Limousin steers from PE & M Capstick, Millom with heifers to £1180 for Limousin x from TS & SM Park, Millom. Young bulls peaked at £920 for Limousin x from DJ & MJ Hoggarth, Ulpha. Yearling cattle met strong bidding with buyers eager to secure stock ahead of turn out and more farmer buyers around the ringside looking to purchase groups of cattle. Cash prizes awarded every sale now for highest priced groups of 3 or more steers and heifers.

The beef heifer class was won by JW & TE Sharp of Flodder Hall who swept the deck with his British Blue heifers. The black and white bull calf class was won by HJ Robinson & Son of Elm Tree. A very mixed show of Stores Cattle forward at Lancaster this morning, sold to market value on the day. Topping the day’s trading was R & E Ladds, Scalthwaiterigg, with a 28month Blue Bullock realising £1340. Native bred bullocks sold to £1310 for a 28month Angus from Oatland Farm Contractors, IOM. Heifers sold to £1200 for a pure Charolais from JD & EM Brown, Scorton. Angus heifers sold to a top of £1120, twice, from SJ Brass, Ingleton and CE & MA Hewitt, Forton. Friesian bullocks sold to £920 from MG & J Parker, Wennington.

Another large show of 118 Cast Cows and OTM Cattle forward this morning saw a mixed show put before a dozen buyers ringside. All classes sold to full value, topping at 139.5ppk for a Black and White heifer from J & O Galbraith, Endmoor or a gross of £980 for a Black and White cow from P & M Crackles, Burrow. Cows sold to a top of 124.5ppk for both Dairy and Beef breeds from SH & LE Birkett, Nether Kellet and JS & S Atkinson, Scorton and R Johnson, Roeburndale.

A small show of Calves this morning with more needed at Lancaster. Calves sold to £300 for Blue Heifers from RT Halhead, Cockerham and Angus Bulls to £280 from the same home. A poorer show of Black and Whites compared to last week, topping at £90 from JM Capstick, Ashton with Stodday. Stirks sold to £510 for a pair of Angus Heifers at 9months from A Shepherd, Pilling. Friesian stirks to £460 at the same age from JT & U Garth, Ellel.

A stronger market average for Prime Lambs then the previous week at Lancaster with a market average 183ppk and SQQ of 187ppk although the trade didn’t seem as strong for a better entry of hoggs forward. Another good entry of Charollais and Texel hoggs from P Lawrenson of Walmsley Fold topped at 205ppk with plenty of in specification well finished hoggs selling in the 190’sppk. Heavy weight Suffolk hoggs sold to £97 from FA Nowell & Partners of Bentham. Mule sold to £86 at 48kg from H Morgan of Stalmine with all Mules forward averaging £81.91 or 184ppk. Horned hoggs saw Blackfaced hoggs to £82 from WM Pye of Tarnwater and Swaledales selling to £78 from KM Curwen of Marshaw Farm.

A disappointing number of seventy Calves forward today and a lot more of all types could have easily been sold to one of the busiest ringside of buyers seen for some time at J36 with some buyers leaving empty handed and very short of numbers to fulfil their requirements. Beef calves saw better types around six weeks old selling in excess of £300 with the first prized bull calf topping at £350 from B & MJ Nelson & Son of Halforth Farm. British Blue heifer calves sold to £335 from Messrs Sowerby of Townhead Farm, Appleby. Young beef calves sold in and around £250 mark. Black & Whites once again a strong trade with more desperately needed at J36 to meet the demand from an active ring of buyers. Better types of rearers sold in excess of £100 topping at £120 from HJ Robinson of Elm Trees with young rearing types selling

The fortnightly sale of Cast/OTM Cattle saw a reduced entry of cows forward with farmers taking advantage of the finer weather and attention turning to lambing sheep. The quality was however better than previous weeks with the market averaging 107p/kg for all sold. A top price of 141p/kg was achieved for a Lim X Cow from GH Jones with Dairy cows peaking at 107p/kg. No prime cattle forward today which was disap-pointing as we now have a buyer regularly looking to purchase prime cattle at NWA J36.

North West Auctions held it’s fortnightly sale of Prime Pigs which saw an ever increasing number of onlookers all keen to attend future sales. The sale commenced with a well-finished white sow from P Woof which sold for £122 (70p/kg). Prime pigs saw well-finished pigs easily sold, selling to £104 for white gilts from J Nuttall, with others generally 90p/kg – 115p/kg. Coloured pigs saw saddleback x sell at £92 (126p/kg) from P Woof.

Prime Hoggs sold to an improved trade compared to previous weeks, with all sold averaging 185p/kg. A top price of £102 was achieved for heavy weight Texel x hoggs from KJ Knight with other heavy hoggs generally selling to the mid £90’s. Commercial hoggs regularly selling into the £80’s with hill hoggs to mid £70’s. A top price of 240p/kg was achieved for Beltex x hoggs from Fishwick Farms, with other well-finished sorts regularly 200p/kg – 220p/kg, with next category sorts 180p/kg – 195p/kg. Light weight hoggs sold to £71 for well finished Herdwicks, with others in the 32kg – 36kg selling between £52- £58 (160p/kg – 190p/kg).

The weekly sale of Cast Ewes had a stronger trade, as numbers begin to tighten. Bigger Continental ewes selling over £100, with best Mules selling into the ninties. A consignment of big ewes from W Garnett & Son of Ackenthwaite saw Suffolk cross ewes selling to £109, with big Mules selling to £94. Leicester ewes topped at £94 from AJ & CM Harrison of Boundary Beck. A good entry of Mule ewes averaged £82. Best Horned ewes in the seventies, topping at £72 from Fishwick Brothers, with good Horned ewes in the sixties. Plainer types of ewes continue to be dear. The trade for tups was noticeably better with buyers looking to purchase tups. An entry of 350 ewes averaged just shy of sixty pound each.
