Carbohydrates

• What are carbohydrates? – They are sugars and starches that occur naturally

in foods, mainly in plants– Gives energy quickly and can be stored for later

energy– HALF to two-thirds of your daily energy should

come from carbs– Two kinds of carbs:

• Simple (sugars-natural & unnatural) – Example: fruits, milk, some vegetables

• Complex (include grains) – Examples: rice, pasta, potatoes (TIP: try to choose

WHOLE grained carbohydrates: brown rice, wheat bread, oatmeal)

FIBER: A SPECIAL Complex Carbohydrate

• What is so special about fiber? – It is the part of fruit, vegetables, grains, and beans

that your body cannot digest. – Special complex carbohydrate

– What does fiber DO? • FIBER = A BROOM• As it passes through the digestive system, fiber

pushes other food particles along– SO it prevents certain types of cancer

Proteins

• What is a protein? – These are nutrients your body uses to build,

repair, and maintain cells and tissues.

– Foods with protein:• Beef, pork, veal, fish, poultry (chicken), eggs and

most dairy products

Water

• Why is water important?– Helps you digest and absorb food– Regulates body temperature and blood circulation– Carries nutrients and oxygen to cells– Removes toxins and wastes from the body– Protects organs and joints by cushioning them

– If we don’t have water? fatigue, confusion, inability to focus

– How much water should I drink? 8, 8 oz glasses a day or more depending on activity!

Fats

• Why do we need fat? – Fat promotes healthy skin, normal cell growth

and carry vitamins to where they are needed in your body!

Types of Fat?• Saturated Fats

– These are solid at room temperature – Examples: Butter, cheese, fatty

meats– Too much of this type can increase

your risk of heart disease• Unsaturated Fats

– Fats that remain liquid at room temperature

– Examples: olive oil, nuts, avocados – Most of the fat in your diet should

come from unsaturated!

Cholesterol• What is cholesterol?

– Fatty substance found in the blood

– Too much can cause plaque to build up in the arteries

– Two types of cholesterol: HDL & LDL

• HDL: healthy, LOWERS the plaque in your arteries

• LDL INCREASES plaque in your arteries (higher in saturated fats)
