The Story of Orang Kayo Itam

A long time ago, Tuanku Ahmad Salim, a guy from Gujarat (Arab) arrived to

Berhala Strait. Ahmad Salim set up an islamic environment for the people around Berhala Strait,

he got title Datuk Paduko Berhalo. His wife was from Minangkabau (West Sumatra). Putri

Selaras Pinang Masak was her name. They had 4 children. Three of them are the leader (datuk)

on the estuary of Batanghari river . Only the youngest was not a leader (datuk) yet, his name

was Orang Kayo Hitam. Orang Kayo Hitam wanted to expand his territory until inland and their

family could govern all regions.

To support his idea, Orang Kayo Hitam explored new region with using a ship to

upstream of the river. In the middle of his journey, Orang Kayo Hitam found a hair on the branch

of the tree.It was long hair, black and shiny, indicating that the owner was a beautiful girl. Orang

Kayo Hitam intended to look for the owner of Black hair and asked her to be his wife.

One day Orang Kayo Hitam arrived in the region named Temenggung Merah Mato.

It was called Temenggung Merah Mato because the leader of this region was Temenggung Merah

Mato. Temenggung Merah Mato had a very beautiful daughter named Putri Mayang Mengurai.

She had very beautiful and shiny hair. In fact, she was the owner of the hair that Orang Kayo

Hitam found. He then delivered his want to Putri Mayang Mengurai. Putri Mayang Mengurai

gave a requirement to him to beat and defeat his private guardsman.

After passing a battle, Orang Kayo Hitam won. Orang Kayo Hitam asked to marry Putri

Mayang Mengurai soon. But Putri Mayang Mangurai gave one requirement again. Orang Kayo

Hitam then decided to go to Java to fulfill the requirement. Having encountered many difficul-

ties, four requirements from Putri Mayang Mengurai done well by Orang Kayo Hitam. Putri

Mayang Mengurai was happy because Orang Kayo Hitam that would be her wife was a strong

and high desireman.

Putri Mayang Mengurai father gave permission to Orang Kayo Hitam to marry his child.

They both got a ship named Kajang Lako and a pair of beautiful white swans as a wedding gift.

The father then told them to go sailing on the Batanghari river with Kajang Lako and bringing

two white swans. Father advised, when two swans found a place and stopped for 2 days, that

meant their place for future.

Next, two swans stopped for 2 days in a region. There were many Pinang(Areca) trees

here. In Java language, Pinang was called Jambe. This place then was called Jambi and became

their region. they built a kingdom that was led by Orang Kayo Hitam and his children.

Cerita Orang Kayo Itam

Zaman dahulu kala, Tuanku Ahmad Salim adalah seorang pemuda dari Gujarat (Arab) yang tiba

di Selat Berhala. Ahmad Salim memberikan pengaruh ajaran islam untuk warga sekitar di Selat Berhala

sehingga dia mendapat panggilan Datuk Paduko Berhalo. Istrinya berasal dari Minangkabau(Sumatra

Barat). Putri Selaras Pinang Masak namanya. Mereka memiliki 4 anak. 3 dari anaknya adalah datuk di

muara Sungai Batanghari. Hanya yang termuda yang belum menjadi datuk, namanya Orang Kayo Hi-

tam. Orang Kayo Hitam ingin memperluas wilayahnya sampai pedalaman sehingga keluarga mereka

dapat memerintah seluruh wilayah.

Untuk mewujudkan idenya, Orang Kayo Hitam menjelajah daerah baru menggunakan sebuah ka-

pal untuk menuju hulu sungai. Di tengah perjalanan, Orang Kayo Hitam menemukan rambut di dahan

pohon. Rambut itu panjang, hitam, dan berkilau serta menunjukkan bahwa pemilik rambut itu adalah

seorang gadis cantik. Orang Kayo Hitam bermaksud untuk mencari pemilik rambut hitam tersebut dan

memintanya untuk menjadi istrinya. Suatu hari Orang Kayo Hitam tiba di daerah bernama Temenggung

Merah Mato. Disebut Temenggung Merah Mato karena kepala daerah ini adalah Temenggung Merah

Mato. Temenggung Merah Mato mempunyai seorang anak perempuan yang sangat cantik bernama Putri

Mayang Mengurai. Dia memiliki rambut indah dan berkilau. Sebenarnya, dialah pemilik rambut yang

Orang Kayo Hitam temukan. Dia kemudian mengutarakan keinginannya kepada Putri Mayang Mengu-

rai. Putri Mayang Mengurai memberikan sebuah syarat kepada dia untuk mengalahkan pengawalnya.

Setelah melewati sebuah pertarungan, Orang Kayo Hitam menang. Orang Kayo Hitam meminta

untuk menikahi Putri Mayang Mengurai segera. Tetapi Putri Mayang Mengurai memberi satu syarat lagi.

Orang Kayo Hitam kemudian memutuskan pergi ke Jawa untuk memenuhi syarat itu. Setelah mengalami

banyak kesulitan, empat persyaratan dari Putri Mayang Mengurai dilakukan dengan baik oleh Orang

Kayo Hitam. Putri Mayang Mengurai senang karena Orang Kayo Hitam yang akan menjadi suaminya

adalah lelaki yang kuat serta mempunyai keinginan yang tinggi.

Ayah Putri Mayang Mengurai memberikan persetujuan kepada Orang Kayo Hitam untuk meni-

kahi putrinya. Mereka berdua mendapat kapal bernama Kajang Lako dan sepasang angsa putih cantik

sebagai hadiah pernikahan.Sang ayah memberi tahu mereka untuk pergi berlayar di Sungai Batanghari

dengan Kajang Lako dan membawa 2 angsa putih. Menurut saran sang Ayah, ketika 2 angsa tersebut

menemukan sebuah tempat dan berhenti selama 2 hari, itu berarti bahwa disanalah tempat mereka untuk

masa depan. Pada suatu hari, kedua angsa tersebut berhenti selama 2 hari. Disana terdapat banyak pohon

pinang. Dalam bahasa Jawa, Pinang disebut Jambe. Tempat itu kemudian dipanggil Jambi dan menjadi

daerah mereka. Mereka mendirikan sebuah kerajaan yang dipimpin oleh Orang Kayo Hitam dan anak-

anaknya.

A student from Japan who had been living in Surabaya, East Java for a year , was part

of a student exchange program from his university. He said that he really loves every-

thing about Indonesia, there are many unforgettable moments for him, especially

when he was in Surabaya. As a foreigner he prefered to speak Bahasa Indonesia

rather than English when meeting most Indonesian people and this interview was

conducted in Bahasa Indonesia

Me(M) : Hello Toshiki san how are you doing?

Toshiki San (T) : Hey, I’m good thanks.

M : How did you feel when you arrived in Indonesia for the first time especially in

Surabaya?

T: I felt a little be sad because i cant meet my family and my friends in Japan. You

know? I felt so afraid when i went to go out or when i decided to take a walk around

Surabaya

because i didn't know how to speak Bahasa Indonesia when i arrived. However, i

learnt

Bahasa Indonesia in university but i am not confident with my ability to speak Ba-

hasa

Indonesia. Even now i feel a bit awkward speaking with foreigners except japanese.

M : But you enjoyed it right? You are able to speak Bahasa Indonesia well now.

T : Yes, although I don't speak Bahasa Indonesia well, I can understand when people

speak Bahasa Indonesia to me.

M : Wow that's good! So have you visited other places in Indonesia?

T : Yes, I've been to Bali, Jakarta, Malang, and Semarang. I have been to many tourist

places/attractions and have been to many traditional places in cities. I like watching

traditional dances. The most beautiful experience is my daily routine in Surabaya. Be-

cause all of my friends are in college and are friendly; my homestay family is so kind.

M : Ok, wow that is very exciting Toshiki san. Thanks you for your time.

A story about a Frenchman who falls in love with Indonesia

He had an adventure in Indonesia? He spends his

money to satisfy his curiosity about Indonesia,

because he wanted to know what Indonesia looked

like.

The first time he came to Indonesia, he had wonder-

ful experiences. He is a photographer in france. His

name is Jeremy Richard Boukechiche. He also ex-

perienced culture shock when he first arrived in

Indonesia.Let's read our interview with him.

Me (M) : bonjour! how are you jeremy? well. what was your feeling when you come to indonesia at the

first time? How did you feel when you came to Indonesia for the first time?

Jeremy (J) : bonjour! im good thanks, well my feeling when i arrived in indonesia is about the

weather ,that was really hot. After that I met up with my friends in medan and found out the indonesian

were very sympathic and welcoming towards foreigners. They have quickly become like family to me.

I like so much about the nature,the village,and also the forest. I don't really like the big city because there

are a lot of pollution and rubbish.,For me indonesia is a wonderful country with magnificent people.

M : You sound like you really enjoyed staying in Indonesia... Then tell us which region/cities have you

visited, and what did you think?

J : I have visited Medan,Berastagi,Jakarta,Yogyakarta,Bogor and also Bukit Lawang to see the Orang

Utan. I like indonesian cultures very much although i don't know it very well. I like their respect to

others religion such as christian,muslim,buddhist etc.

M : Those are beautiful experiences right? So when you came to Indonesia, did you ever get a culture

shock?

J : Yup absolutely.there was a little bit culture shock. First about the traditional way to eat with hands,

second there were ways to bathe traditionally which really made me confused but I finally like it. Third,

in Indonesia people have to be married when they want to live and have a child together,but in France

marriage is not important.

M : Wow those are really different to France ,so will you come to indonesia again someday?

J : Yes! hopefully i can come to Indonesia again,but have to find a job first.

My Brother’s Bike By : Akhyari Hananto

I still clearly recall this true story. I remember it well. I came from an economically-

modest family in the hilly and chilly northern Yogyakarta. My father worked as a

teacher at a local Islamic school. He also grew rice and vegetables and sold them to

local market. He did not earn much from either job; hence why we had so little to spend

with each other and to make ends meet. I remember a time when dad saved his monthly

income little by little to buy something for my younger brother. My brother had been

dreaming of, a bicycle, (my brother never directly asked for it; knowing that it was very

unlikely that my father would buy one due to financial constraints).

In short, my father bought a BMX-style bicycle and my brother was so overwhelmed for

his dream came true and for the surprise. What my brother did not realize was that the

bike was not a brand name bike and I knew it would soon break down. I knew, my dad

did almost anything he could to buy it; my brother could not expect for more. I was not

surprised to see that less than a month later, the bike sounded awful. This meant that

its‟ chain was seriously damaged, and before long it broke. All I knew was that the pedal

and seat post was also damaged and could lead to serious injury if not immediately

repaired. I was surprised by my brother, despite being desperately sad, he remained

calm, and I could feel why my father would feel so guilty. But I was not totally right.

Yes, my father felt guilty for not only buying him a „cheap‟ bike, but also when it was

damaged, he had neither the money nor the skill to repair it.

But no, my brother was not devastated. He seemed normal. He even said to me “I can fix

it myself, yes I can do it.” After that short-yet-stunning moment, he started fixing the

bike using whatever tools were available at our house. Oh yeah, he could do it alright. I

never heard him complain about the bike after that, not even once. It was not the only

time the bike got broken either. One day he came home from school (grade 3) and he was

walking his bike home because the chain broke, again. For most children at his age,

perhaps the second incident in less than a month would make them desperate, angry, or

dispirited. But, NOT my brother. He and my father diligently fixed the bike every time

something went wrong, replaced the damaged parts one by one (it took time because

money was scarce), and that's where my brother learned to fix bikes for minor damage.

In the first 3 months, I remember the bike broke every 3-4 days.

Years went by, it turned into a tough bike that rarely got broken easily, not only

because some parts had been replaced, but also because my brother‟s diligence to

maintain, clean, and fix it. Until 15 years later, the once easily-broken bicycle can still

be used properly and comfortably. And one thing I need to underline is that my brother

is now the owner of 11 bicycle/motorbike workshops in Yogyakarta and spare parts store

owner in Yogyakarta and Solo.

The story might seem like a soap opera to you (even to me), but this is true story.

If Indonesia is a bicycle, my father is the government, and my brother is its people. We

cannot change the past; this is Indonesia as we see it today, with so many challenges,

and so many problems. It needs no complainer, this is not for a faint-hearted people, and

Indonesians need to act, to give solutions, to work together, with whatever resources

and capacity we have. The government has many limitations, budget, capacity, willing-

ness, and others. Let‟s deal with that. It is us, the people who play the most important

role. Like my brother, he could just peel the mistakes and shortcomings of the bike, and

blame my father for all the time, and if he had of done that, it would not have fixed the

bike. My brother chose to repair it as best as he could, without cursing. And he made it.

We often hear people saying, “Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness”,

so let‟s light a candle.
