Congratulatory Messages

from the Faculty Members My heartiest congratulations to the graduating EE and CEG classes of 2016! It is an exciting time to embark on your journey as an Engineer given the many important issues that concern Society today such as climate change, rapid urbanization and the spread of infectious diseases which will require advanced engineering solutions. I am confident that the education and training that we at ECE have endeavored to provide you has equipped you well to tackle some of these challenges. NUS is a global university that is well recognized throughout the world. As NUS alumni your successes in your professional careers will certainly contribute to further enhance the international standing of your alma mater. I hope you will always stay in touch with us and help us make ECE/NUS even better for many more generations of talented Engineers that we will nurture. Your support, in whatever form, will be most appreciated.

Heartfelt best wishes to the Class of 2016 as you take on the challenges ahead!

A/Prof Tan Kok Kiong

Folks, As you transition from university to workplace, you are also going to make a transition from marks to markets. The four years of NUS were the best years of your life. Friendships were made, trips were taken, games were played, and time permitting some studies were done too. Professors were villains for a bad grade while you were the heroes for a good grade. Of course! It is a time you should remember fondly. All the cholesterol you consumed while enjoying the meals at Engin Canteen must have prepared you well for the challenges that await you. We wish you well and we are confident that you will do well. Jai HO!

A/Prof Hari Garg

Dear EE/CEG Class of 2016, wishing you a bright future and career ahead.

Message from Electrical &

Computer Engineering Valedictorian

But also because of this, some of our peers have fallen out along the way or transferred to a different course. A friend of mine was placed under probation and dropped out after his second year.

Later, we initiated the peer tutoring programme and our volunteer peer tutors patiently taught juniors in need throughout each semester. Thanks to these tutors, those juniors may one day be able to celebrate their own commencement here as we do now.

Firstly, on behalf of the class, I would like to thank our educators for their dedication towards ensuring our mastery of ECE subjects, their patience in conducting consultation sessions and entertaining our last-minute emails, as well as for having carefully guided us throughout the year until the fruition of our final year projects. I still remember my struggle to understand surface integrals, electromagnetics and quantum physics. I think that the difficulty of our modules ramped up in our second year and the projects kept us very busy throughout our third and final year.

We can also be collectively proud of other differences our cohort has made for our juniors that will last beyond our stay here: Like the ECE Caregroup which hosted a friendly environment for students in need, to create a more caring student community; Like restarting the ECE Camp so that our future batches are more vibrant and united; Like forming the first Undergraduate Student Council, which organises career fairs and events to help us foster closer ties with the ECE Department.

Page 10: NUS ECE Class of 2016

But what will last even longer is not even the memory of this commencement today. It is definitely the time we spent in NUS with the friends we made.

They entertained us during the most boring of classes. They kept us sane and joined us in our rants. They revised with us and kept us going even as we painfully debugged our projects and tried to get them to work right up to the demonstration day. Thank you, friends, for the unquantifiable differences you have made to our university lives. I hope we can continue keeping in close contact even as we scatter and begin our new lives.

This is it; our old lives are over. We have collected our scrolls, had our photos taken and are reaching the end of ceremony already. How do you feel?

9

I feel anxious and uncertain because this is the end of the sheltered path. There are no more nicely-structured modules or timetables. Work is like a permanent IA with 100% CA grading, and I don’t even know how my bosses are going to grade me. I can’t directly give my bosses anonymous teaching feedback either. When I look at job listings I don’t know if a job fits me and it is something I want to do for life. There is sadly no one able give us these answers anymore, especially in a world where no one knows for sure what tomorrow will bring. Even then, I feel excited and inquisitive again, just like when I first matriculated and everything is new. I feel confident that somehow things will work out, because we have already made it this far and it wasn’t easy. I am hopeful that for all of us, this commencement heralds the beginning of a new life more challenging, exciting and rewarding than what we have ever experienced. I wish all of us the very best. Thank you and Godspeed.

An eagle will not be able to soar high without the wind beneath her wings. Just as we are here today to celebrate, commemorate and commence on our next chapter in our lives, let us give thanks to people who have supported us in our remarkable journey over the last couple of years. Thank you!

After the numerous sessions spent on building circuits in the labs, the countless hours spent debugging our programming codes that never seem to work, and the sleepless nights spent on writing our lab reports and thesis, we have finally made it to this day. I think we all deserve a big round of applause. However, we should note that we were never alone in our arduous journey through college. Throughout the time spent in NUS, we have received help from many people, such as our professors, lab technicians and friends. In particular, we should show appreciation to a special group of people; our parents, who have been providing us with both emotional and financial support, I am sure that many of us will not be here today if not for them. Let’s give another round of applause to thank our parents and loved ones for their sacrifices.

I would like to extend my deepest and heartiest congratulations to all my fellow graduates! It is indeed a feat to have persevered through these challenging four years and we have emerged triumphant. How can we ever forget those endless nights working on the infamous microcontroller, LPC1769, only to have it stop working on the actual day of the project demo! At this juncture, I’m also reminded of the hours we spend slogging in the labs so much so that they became our second homes and the constant prayers to the omnipotent bell curve god. But life was not all about circuits and chips. There were also many moments of shared laughter and seamless cooperation between us and our friends. I’m sure that we will cherish the unforgettable memories that we have made here in EE and NUS for many years to come

I am sure that our friendships are all different, and each one is unique. Given how important our friends are, let us do our part and make a commitment to each other to remain friends. It is not only about how we have found good friends, but how we can be a good friend to others as well. Sure, it will be difficult; it will probably be tiring as well. But we know that our friendships have an important place in our lives, and it is worth the effort to treasure our friends. Set your eyes on your goals and pursue them boldly, and keep your friends close to your heart. I wish everyone the best of luck in your career aspirations, and may God bless you all. Thank you.

Thank you, Prof Loh Ai Poh and Prof Vivian Ng, for taking that extra effort to coach some of the weaker Poly direct-intake students to understand some of the Mathematics concepts better and to pass the modules. Thank you to many other Professors too, who went the extra mile in ensuring knowledge transfer.

Thank you Prof Chen Zhi Ning and Dr Liu Wei. You have been very instrumental and inspirational for me to complete my FYP with great satisfaction. Besides winning the ECE FYP Poster Presentation 2016, I will also be awarded a University Level Award, the "Alcatel-Lucent Technology Prize", for best Communications Engineering FYP. This would not be possible without your strong mentorship. Thank you.

I would like to thank the department for this wonderful bachelor journey. Cheers to all my peers that been through with me, all the best for everyone!
