• From January 2014 the School of Health Professions and the School of Nursing and Midwifery will merge into a new school
• The name is currently being decided through consultation with students and staff and will be announced in November 2013
• The merger will not impact on your course and will facilitate further inter-professional collaboration within the school

• Adult and children’s nursing courses commence in February 2014, September 2014 and February 2015
• Adult nursing can be studied in East (Hastings and Eastbourne) or West (Falmer) and a preference for clinical placement can be expressed at interview
• Children’s nursing is taught in Falmer with placements across the whole county
• Mental Health nursing has one September intake per year. Taught aspect is delivered in Falmer and placements are across the whole county

Writing a Good Personal Statement
• Do not start the personal statement with words of
wisdom or a quote about Florence Nightingale
• Focus on the course applied for
• Identify key transferable skills from your current role, life experience or voluntary work
• Avoid talking about very personal experiences. Some midwifery applicants discuss their own birthing experience or breastfeeding
• Identify how you will cope with the demands of a degree. This may include insight or reflection on your learning and academic journey so far

• A good supportive reference will reflect the applicant’s personal statement
• If an applicant says they are friendly and outgoing it creates a good impression if the referee uses similar phrases
• A statement on time-keeping, commitment, attendance and reliability
• How the applicant is coping with the academic demands of current course
• If the referee foresees any issues or weaknesses that may affect the applicants transition from HE to university

• All interviews include a presentation by the admission tutor staff related to the specific course applied for
• All applicants are required to sit a written English and numeracy paper. Pass mark for each paper is 50%
• All shortlisted applicants are interviewed by University and Trust Partnership Representatives
• No applicants can be advised of the outcome on the day
