Community Service Day January 2007

Receiving More Than We Give

Cedar Crest College Nursing Students participated in the Nursing Department’s Annual Volunteer Day on Wednesday, January 17,

2007. Good Shepherd Home in Bethlehem was among the many sites where the students offered service. Eleven students and one faculty member thoroughly enjoyed this experience which provided a valuable lesson outside of the classroom. Nursing students were assigned to different residents’ rooms to

assist with dusting, cleaning closets, folding clothes and general cleaning. The residents as well as the staff were very welcoming to the Cedar Crest Nursing representatives

Students marveled at how well the residents lived with their physical challenges. Students took more notice to the abilities of the people they met rather than their disabilities. What was even more astonishing was the joy that these residents shared with the students. By the end of the day, residents were hugging students and telling them they loved them and were appreciative of the help. Many students and the faculty member walked out of the Good Shepherd Home with a feeling of wonder because they realized that although they came to serve, they received much more than they could ever give.

Our next Community Service Day will be

held on May 23rd. This date will include

the Part time Winter students and all other

part time students who were not able to

participate in January. You will be

contacted by email if you are required to participate at that

time.

Good News for the Nursing Profession... The annual USA TODAY / GALLUP POLL measuring honesty and ethics among 23 oc-cupations puts nurses at the top of the list for the sixth straight year. Eighty four per-cent of Americans say standards for nurses are "high" or "very high." Other healthcare professionals, such as pharmacists, veterinarians, medical doctors, and dentists are high on the list as well. In the middle of the list we find college teach-ers, police officers, and bankers. And down near the bottom, members of congress, in-surance salespersons, HMO managers, and car sales persons. Here's the list according to USA TODAY and GALLUP: Nurses - 84% Druggists, Pharmacists - 73% Veterinarians - 71% Medical Doctors - 69% Dentists - 62% Engineers - 61% Clergy - 58% College Teachers - 58% Police Officers - 54% Psychiatrists - 38% Bankers - 37% Chiropractors - 36% Journalists - 26% State Governors - 22% Business Executives - 18% Lawyers - 18% Stockbrokers - 17% Senators - 15% Members of Congress - 14% Insurance Sales Persons - 13% HMO Managers - 12% Advertising Practitioners - 11% Car Salespersons - 7%

“I Can’t Quit Smoking Now!”

As we all know, college is very stressful. The pressures of the Nursing curriculum and per-sonal responsibility for people’s very LIVES are in-tense. What a time to try to break a conditioned stress response! But admit it….you feel so ashamed as you pop another breath mint, spray a little scent. Unfor-tunately, your sense of smell is muted when you smoke. The rest of us- your patient included- smell the minty/flowery/ashtray as soon as you get off the elevator. Hospitals recognize this. Lehigh Valley Hospital is going smoke-free in 2007 to try to pro-vide the most healthful environment for patient re-covery. What this means is no employee, patient, or visitor smoking within 100 feet of any facility. (No, not even in your car.) As the new year approaches I offer you a compromise: cut down on your smoking. Be the nursing presence you aspire to be for your patient and refrain from those pre-clinical cigarettes. Com-mit to holding off until after you leave the clinical setting- no smoking before your morning shower, in the car on the way to the hospital, no quick puffs grabbed in the parking lot. Chew gum, pop mints, sip tea, crunch a baggie of Cheerios, suck your thumb…find a healthier oral substitute. Do it for your patient, and you will easily find your-self going 16 hours between smokes. Work toward controlling your smoking, rather than it controlling you. Then, when you do graduate, quitting will be that much easier. Submitted by Beth Nesland RN, MSN, CRNP
