The Bachelor of Midwifery degree has been designed to develop skilled and caring midwives with the expertise to support women and their families during pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period.

Graduates will develop skills to work in partnership with women and collaborate with other members of the health care team in order to provide ‘woman-centred’ care. The course has been divided evenly into 50 per cent theoretical component and 50 per cent practical component spread across the full three years of the program. This course is offered on the Parramatta campus.

During your studies, you will learn about the science and art of midwifery knowledge and practice, the principles of primary health care, how to work in partnership with women from all cultures and how to translate theory and research into practice.

Practice experiences will occur in a variety of areas, such as antenatal clinics and wards, birthing units, postnatal wards, newborn nursery and community. This experience will be undertaken in blocks of time (from one day a week to five days per week) during the three-year course, with fewer clinical hours in first year compared to second year, and the majority occurring in the third year. The practice experience also includes placement with caseload midwives, privately practising midwives and child and family health professionals.

Students will begin their first midwifery practice placement in the first semester of the Bachelor of Midwifery degree, after they have met all the prerequisites for clinical placement. Students will attend antenatal clinics on a weekly basis and begin by observing the practice of midwifery care. In lab-based simulations students will develop confidence in midwifery skills and the provision of midwifery care.

Throughout their degree, students will also be required to meet and work in partnership with 10 women to gain experience in midwifery continuity of care. Under the supervision of a registered midwife, students will follow the women through their pregnancy, labour and birth and during the postnatal period for up to six weeks. These continuity of care experiences will be spread across the three years: two in first year, three in second year and five in the third year.

PROFESSIONAL RECOGNITION

Successful completion of the course enables you to apply for registration as a registered midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), which is a partner board of the Australian Health Practitioners Registration Authority (AHPRA).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS PREREQUISITES

3. NSW Health Code of Conduct signed

4. Student Undertaking Placement/Declaration signed

5. A valid Working with Children Check

6. A current, approved First Aid certificate.

All must be completed before students are eligible for clinical placement.

This may require students to attend a birth during the evening or at night. Students must have access to safe transport arrangements in order to satisfy this requirement.

CORE UNITS AND ELECTIVES

The core units you will study in this degree include: Bioscience; Midwifery Knowledge; Midwifery Practice; Human Relationships and Life Transitions; Health in a Culturally Diverse Community; Promoting Mental Health and Wellbeing; and Leadership in Nursing and Midwifery.
