Nursery Newsletter October 09
Open Night
It was good to see so many of you at the recent Open Evening in the nursery. We hope you enjoyed
looking at your child’s Early Years Learning Profile Folder and at the many displays, pictures and
photographs around the nursery.
Please remember you can look at your child’s folder at anytime.
TopicsThe children have been learning about traditional stories through books, puppets, felt
story boards and role play. We have been looking at size while learning the story of
Goldilocks and the Three Bears and the Three Billy Goats Gruff. We have also been
learning to use the tools on the interactive white board to help us tell the story in
sequence. The children enjoyed decorating and eating their own Gingerbread man after
reading the story. As well as the work we did within the nursery we also participated in a whole school
‘warm up to books week’. The children decorated the nursery door with the story of the ‘Gingerbread
Man’ and on the Thursday we all had a fantastic time joining in the parade around the school in our book
character costumes with the rest of the school.
We are also still concentrating on settling the children in, learning routines and rules and encouraging
sharing, turn taking and friendships. Every day we discuss the weather and the days of the week. Wealso have a sound of the week table which we encourage the children to add to by bringing something in
from the house that begins with the initial sound we are discussing. We would also ask that you consider
environmental print as well as resources. For example when ‘a’ was our sound of the week we discussed
‘Asda’ so the children could bring in an ‘Asda’ bag.
Falkirk Football Club
As you may remember last month the children had a visit from Falkirk Football Club and the BBC came
to video the children playing ball games. The footage was broadcast last Tuesday on the BBC and a
DVD will be made of this. Once we have the DVD we will be happy to make you a copy of the broadcast
if you supply us with a blank DVD. All children have also been given a certificate in celebration of this.
Autumn walk
The children went a walk to the park before the October holiday and observed the
changing colours of the leaves on the trees as well as finding lots of chestnuts and
twigs. Within nursery the children have enjoyed
exploring the natural world in our Nature Area. We
would like to thank parents for encouraging the
children to bring in some leaves and chestnuts to add to our nature area.
On our walk we also reinforced the importance of holding hands and we
practised how to cross the road safely.
Eco Schools
The nursery and school now have their Eco Schools Green Flag award. The children in
nursery will continue to be involved in reducing litter and waste, improving the nursery
environment and also reducing water and energy use. They recently had a talk from two
children from primary 6 and 7 about being eco friendly and about our ‘Walk to school on
Wednesday’ initiative. The children were very good at listening and answering questions that
the big boys and girls asked. We hope you will support us in encouraging the children to be considerate
of the environment that we live in and if possible support us in our walk to nursery on Wednesdays. We
will be competing with all the other classes in the school to see how many children walk to school on
Wednesdays.
Dental Hygienist
The dental hygienist has been into visit the children and has shown them all how to brush
their teeth. Children now have their own toothbrush and brush their teeth in nursery on a
daily basis.

Pantomime
The PTA have arranged for M & M Productions to perform Peter Pan on Monday 26th October in the
afternoon. We therefore invite all morning children to come to nursery at 1 pm that day.
There will be no morning nursery. Children should be collected at 3 pm. All afternoon
children should also be collected at 3 pm.
All snack/activity money should therefore be paid on Tuesday morning/afternoon instead of
the Monday morning/afternoon.
Halloween
On Friday 30 October we will be having a party in Nursery. All children can dress up if
they wish or if they are not too keen just let them bring a prop like a pumpkin, a spider or a
witch’s hat. All children will be involved in lots of fun activities. Please ensure that the
children do not wear masks that may scare other children as it should be a fun day for all of the children.
Outdoor Play
Even on a cold (and some wet) winter days the children will have access to the outdoor
area. We know many of you come by car but please ensure your child has a jacket with
them in case they wish to play outdoors.
W.I.L.F. (What I’m looking for) is a little, wooden owl in the nursery who, along with staff, is looking
to see if the children are being especially kind, caring and helpful to others. In celebration
of this the child will get a leaf to put on the Caring/Sharing Tree. Please encourage and
celebrate your child’s achievement by putting the leaf on the tree together!
