When Lynne Dejadon started with the company in 1985, Nurse Mates was known strictly as a footwear and compression hosiery company. It was not long before Lynne’s imprint was felt as Nurse Mates pushed the industry by bringing exciting color and design to hosiery. In the early 90’s, Nurse Mates brought watches into the line. Around

the same time, they also launched their first line of scrubs, which Lynne described as “so amazing!” Lynne explained that in the late 80’s and early 90’s, scrubs in the marketplace were extremely basic. Everything was unisex with solid colors, the standard 2 pocket v neck tops, elastic bottom pants, cotton blend fabric – there was nothing designed for comfort nor fashion.

“We approached a ready-to-wear design apparel company, and told them that we wanted to develop a line of scrubs that didn’t look like scrubs. We wanted to be fashionable but functional, and we launched a scrub program that was entirely unique to the market; it was ready-to-wear inspired but with fashion twists.” Nurse Mates developed fitted scrubs, buttons, seams, and waffle-knit Henley tops that didn’t look like traditional scrubs, but were fashionable and functional.

With shoes and apparel firmly under their finger, Nurse Mates set out to expand their consumer

offering. There was extensive research: visiting various uniform shops, accessory stores, and speaking directly with customers. One moment that stood out to Lynne came while visiting a nursing store and conversing with the manager. The manager mentioned that their second best-selling item, after scrubs, was stethoscopes. The stethoscopes were behind the register on a shelf in plain white boxes with a dot that marked the color as black, white, or gray. This was a pivotal moment for Lynne and Nurse Mates as they put on their creative hats and began to brainstorm; “If these are the #2 best-selling items and they’re not even being displayed, what could we do at Nurse Mates to expand on this idea?” Soon Nurse Mates brand stethoscopes with bright colors, patterned tubing, and coordinated bandage scissors and blood pressure cuffs were selling across the country. Everything was bright, colorful, and color-coordinated. The customer response was amazing.

“There have been a lot of milestones for Nurse Mates,” Lynn noted, “some that people may not even realize. We really pushed for improvement with compression socks, hosiery, scrubs, and accessories – and I’ve been privileged to see all of this happen first hand.” Just within the last 5 years, Nurse Mates introduced a compression sock program with multiple color ways, and Lynne noted that the last 5 years have been phenomenal for

“WE WANTED TO DEVELOP A LINE OF

SCRUBS THAT DIDN’T LOOK LIKE SCRUBS.”

“THERE HAVE BEEN A LOT OF MILESTONES FOR NURSE MATES, SOME THAT PEOPLE

MAY NOT EVEN REALIZE.”

DIVISION MANAGER, NURSE MATES

Page 8: NURSE MATES MANAGER Lynne Top Dejadon Medical - Super …€¦ · fashionable and functional. With shoes and apparel firmly under their finger, Nurse Mates set out to expand their

compression socks in the business. The Nurse Mates Align program was recently introduced as well, which has been a unique and forward-thinking program that blends athletically-inspired shoes with corrective orthotics.

Sometimes it may seem difficult to find inspiration, but Lynne looks for it everywhere she goes. Whether she is out shopping or just passing by a display window, Lynne is always looking for ways to expand what she sees, and how to make it meaningful and valid for nurses. “I always think: ‘How can Nurse Mates use this?’

Nurse Mates also has exceptional vendor partners who ignite ideas and work jointly with Nurse Mates to develop new, innovative, and exciting ideas for the nursing community. Lynne also noted that she is fortunate to have quite a few nurses and healthcare professionals in her family, so she is always tapping into them for ideas; for things they wish they had, for items they do or don’t like, or how a certain fabric feels. It is helpful for Lynne to have actual nurses trying her product on and evaluating the performance of various items.

“I’m very lucky, very fortunate, to have the job that I do.” Lynne excitedly told us. “I wear a different hat every single day, and I love it. One minute I’m a buyer, the next I am a seller, and then a marketer, and then a producer. My job offers me the great opportunity to do something

different every day, and to really delve into the industry. I love math and I love creativity, so truly…I am really, really lucky.”

Lynne, and the entire staff at Nurse Mates, would like to pass on this message to all nurses:

“We want nurses to know how much we truly appreciate them as human beings – not as our customer – not as someone who is just buying our product – but truly appreciating how much they do every single day. We really do admire the healthcare profession, for it consists of so

many selfless, caring, and kind people. The more that we interact with nurses, the more we can’t help but shout the praises of how amazing you all are! We aren’t saying that as a gimmick to try to get you to buy stuff; we really do appreciate what you all do more than anything. You all inspire us to do more and to give back in any way we can. We really want to give back to you, and our hope is that in all we do, that we provide you all with the tools you need to get through your day with ease and comfort. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. Thank you for all you do. We love you!”

Dorothy Sutherland of the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare approached President Eisenhower, asking for a Day in October to be dedicated as “Nurses Day.” However, he denied her request.

The official bill for “National Nurses Week” was introduced to the 1955 Congress, but no action was taken. Congress discontinued its practice of joint resolutions for national weeks of various kinds.

Again, a resolution was represented by the House of Representatives for the President to proclaim a “National Registered Nurses Day.” It did not pass.

“National Nurses Week” was observed Oct 11-16. The year of this observance marked the 100th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s mission to Crimea. Representative Frances P. Bolton sponsored the bill for a Nurses Week that would be presented to Congress the following year.

The International Council of Nurses proclaimed May 12th as “International Nurses Day” in celebration of Florence Nightingale’s birthday.

In February, the ANA Board of Directors formally acknowledged May 6, 1982 as “National Nurses Day.” On March 25, President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation for “National Recognition Day for Nurses” to be May 6, 1982.

In 1993, May 6-12 became the permanent observance for

National Nurses Week, marking exactly 40 years since the idea

was first presented. Coincidentally, the average age of a nurse back in 1993 was 40 years old. So, it took exactly one lifetime of the average

nurse for Nurses Week to be nationally recognized.

ANA, along with various nursing organizations rallied to

support a resolution initiated by nurses in New Mexico,

through their Congressman Manuel Lujan to have May 6,

1982 established as “National Recognition Day for

Nurses.”

Dr. Carla Fry, the Assistant Professor of Nursing at Jacksonville University and the director of the RN to BSN Online Program at Jacksonville University says: “The opportunity to be involved in another person’s life at a pivotal moment is not one that should be taken lightly. It is a privilege, a blessing, and often has a profound impact on the way we lead our lives moving forward. To me, this is why the nursing profession is such a great source of pride. As nurses, we meet people who are often at their worst, having just learned that they are ill or possibly having been involved in a catastrophic accident of some sort. The relationship between patient and nurse is thrust upon those who end up in the hospital. Suddenly we are a part of their lives in a very intimate way…hearing about all the details of their personal life, learning about their illness, and invading personal space and privacy.”

- Dr. Carla Fry

The ANA Board of Directors expanded the recognition of nurses to a week-long

celebration, declaring May 6-12, 1991 as “National Nurses Week.”

The combination of leadership and gratitude is extremely powerful. Gratitude helps you feel better and see the good things in life. When combined with a gratitude practice, you will also be able to anchor that positive feeling into your brain and body, thus being able to call on that positive emotional reserve whenever you need to.

The power of gratitude gives leaders the edge they need to quickly pivot during stressful situations, such as their team not performing or their bottom line dropping. When leaders pause for 60 seconds and use the Gratitude Practice outlined below, they give their brains and their bodies a chance to recalibrate. This allows them to focus not only on the present and how they can turn things around, but on hidden opportunities to be grateful.

While we tend to only think about gratitude during the holiday season or when a monumental event occurs, gratitude doesn’t need to be limited to those two scenarios. We can be storing up a large reserve of positive energy, generated through gratitude, all year long. Leaders can use this energy to ground themselves when life gets stressful. Each day gives us something to be grateful for and a little bit of gratitude goes a long way.

There are several ways that you can incorporate gratitude into your daily routine, such as journaling and mindfulness practices. My executive coaching clients have found the Gratitude Practice to be the most beneficial.

Doing Good Feels GoodWhen leaders engage in this practice on a regular basis, they are able to generate gratitude from within, which allows them to show gratitude to others. This practice also reinforces a feeling of gratitude as second nature because it reinforces myelination. All of these amazing results occur in under 60-seconds. We all have 60-seconds per day to devote to gratitude.

STI's Gratitude Practice1. Close your eyes. Focus on a blessing in your life… something you are thankful for. See an image of this blessing in your mind’s eye. Offer a silent “thank you” to the person or object of your blessing.

2. Relax into the feeling of gratitude. Take a deep breath.

3. Feel more gratitude.

The latest brain research shows that six doses of feeling 30 seconds of gratitude daily (a whopping three minutes!) will enable your neurons to fire together and wire together around gratitude within a mere two weeks.

This means you’ll more easily and frequently access the feeling of gratitude.

Heck, we’re grateful for that!

It’s a typical weekday morning. You’re packing lunch for your boy with one hand, and braiding your girl’s hair with the other.

Just when you think you might be superhuman, you go and put mayo in her hair. Oopsie. Hey, it smooths flyaways like coconut oil, right? You shake it off, and hand them over to your husband for drop-off.

to create the roll.• Continue to roll until you run out of ponytail.• Fasten under the roll with bobby pins until it

feels secure.

THINGS I TELL MY CLIENTS ABOUT SKIN CARE4

BEAU

By Makeup Artist, Lennie Billy

One of the main questions that clients — and EVERYONE, once they find out I'm a makeup artist — ask me is: what are the best makeup brands for covering skin imperfections?

Unfortunately, there's no makeup in the world that will totally cover all blemishes, but there's makeup that will correct and conceal imperfections in a way that makes your skin look more flawless. Makeup is meant to enhance your beauty, not create a New You. My motto is, less is more. You are already beautiful! And if you're looking to makeup to cover imperfections, you may just need guidance on how to learn more about your skin.

Skin care is extremely, if not the most, important part of your makeup routine. If you have a good canvas, then your painting will look amazing — even if it is the most simple one.

TY4 THINGS ABOUT SKIN CARE continued

1. MOISTURIZE ATALL TIMES.

Your skin is an organ, and like any other organ, it requires care. Make sure you hydrate your skin at all times, from head to toe. Since we are talking about your face, make sure you use moisturizer before and after makeup. Also, choose a good SPF; if you think you will be spending long hours under the sun you might have to choose a high SPF, like 50 or even 100, but if you work in an office or interior settings, you can choose one from 15 to 30. Drinking lots of water is another great (and necessary) way to hydrate your skin too!

2. HAVE A SKINCARE ROUTINE BASED ON YOUR SPECIFIC NEEDS.

There are a few products you need to always have in your routine, specially if you are an everyday makeup wearer: makeup remover, facial cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. Choose each one of them depending on your skin type. I always recommend to consult with a specialist if you suffer from sensitive skin, rosacea, acne, or any skin problems, so you invest in the right product that will help your skin get better.

HERE ARE THE TIPS I ALWAYS RECOMMEND TO CLIENTS:

34

Page 35: NURSE MATES MANAGER Lynne Top Dejadon Medical - Super …€¦ · fashionable and functional. With shoes and apparel firmly under their finger, Nurse Mates set out to expand their

4. LET YOUR SKIN BREATHE FOR A DAY.

I know, I know, I'm asking you to choose a day to not wear makeup, but it's for the sake of looking good in the long run! At least once every two weeks, take a full day to pamper your skin. Maybe try that mask you always wanted to try, or get a facial. The skin needs a break once in a while to restore and heal from all the products and chemicals we put on it, so make sure you give the skin that well-deserved break!

3. ALWAYS REMOVE YOUR MAKEUP.

No matter what happens, if you get home late, if you had the worst day of your life, if you feel sick, or if you are so tired that you don't even know who you are, PLEASE remove your makeup. Your pores open up to release toxins when you're asleep, so if you're sleeping with makeup on, your pores will get clogged. That's when the blackheads or pimples appear! You may notice the appearance of wrinkles, spots, or discoloration. The skin can also start to feel very dry or extremely oily.

Your choice of summer vacation says a lot about you, whether you realize it or not. Did you know that extroverts gravitate toward the salt life while introverts tend to head for the mountains? This may seem intuitive now that we mention it, but a University of Virginia study has confirmed this very notion.

A series of tests linking geography to personality were conducted by a team of psychologists, including the analysis of 613,000 personality surveys from across the U.S. It turns out that people from mountainous areas are more introverted than those living in flatter states. Beyond that, when looking at a series of landscape photos, extroverts preferred ocean scenes; introverts preferred mountains.

In general, beach vacation spots tend to have more group recreational activities and offer the opportunity for people-watching. These are important to you because you draw your energy from the world around you, finding inspiration in social interaction.

Introverts tend to lose energy when spending time among the masses. Your natural state of comfort is more private, an ideal afforded to you by a more reclusive environment. Your inner self is motivated through reflection and peace – and what could be more calming than the quiet seclusion of the mountains?

But don’t let your vacation label you. There are always other factors – due in part to finances, distance, and even health. Just because you have an annual family vacation at the shore does not mean you are an extrovert. And conversely the expense of traveling to the ocean from, say, Colorado, can be the predominant motivation for choosing the mountains – not a tendency toward introversion. There are also a number of personality traits that are shared by beach-goers and mountain-seekers alike, including being independent, affectionate, music-loving, and foodies.

IS GREATNESS DEFINED BY CHAMPIONSHIPS?Written by Dewey

In a word, yes.

I can already hear the snarled cries of “Dan Marino!” echoing in the rafters – but hear me out. Can I find examples that break the rule? Sure. Marino, Barkley, Malone, and Stockton come to mind immediately. If there is a rule there will be exceptions. But by examining the rule we find that achievements are the governors of how we speak. They dictate the conversations we have. We talk more about Super Bowls than Week 5s. Baseball has Mr. October but not Mr. June. The mental images of our collective sports minds are of Jordan kissing trophies and Gretzky hoisting cups. Our great moments occur on the grandest of stages and we herald the athletes that come out on top.

Tom Brady is in the conversation for greatest QB of all time (feel how you want about Brady – but he IS in the conversation). Would he be there without the rings? Not sure? Where do you rank Jim Kelly?

See, being excellent doesn’t get you titles. But titles can make you seem excellent. At least in the vaulted hallways of our sports consciousness.

The math on it looks like this:

EQUATION A: Superb Talent + No Rings = Maybe Great

EQUATION B: Superb Talent + 1 or More Rings = Definitely Great

39

Page 40: NURSE MATES MANAGER Lynne Top Dejadon Medical - Super …€¦ · fashionable and functional. With shoes and apparel firmly under their finger, Nurse Mates set out to expand their

In A, Marino and Malone are on the great side of Equation A. Carmelo Anthony is not.In B, Jordan was great with or without rings. Scott Pippen rode titles to get him into the Top 50 of All Time. History will see no distinction between Pippen and ‘Melo; except favoring Pippen for the fact that he won rings, even though Anthony is likely the transcendent talent.

There are a handful of guys in each sport that supersede the championship law and achieve historical greatness without the wins. But far more have had greatness bestowed upon them simply because of the moment. Think of Bobby Thomson and Joe Namath. Like it or not, both wander kingly in those vaulted halls – granted such distinction not by the caliber of their play but by the achievement of the moment. The win. The title. The championship.

The only constant, reliable way to greatness is to couple your talent with

championship wins.

While you do not need to win a championship to qualify as great, the conversation of greatness will continue to tend toward those that won; and as a result, defines

greatness accordingly. It’s not what we want, but it is what we do.

Written by Otis

As professional sports grow, and athletes get bigger, stronger and faster, the gap between “great” and “good” is shrinking. Labeling an athlete as “great” is not as easy as it used to be. Perhaps I’m a little nostalgic and remember the athletes of my youth as better than they were, but I feel like you could just watch a game and see with your own two eyes who was great. Their play and athleticism jumped off the screen. Barry Sanders, Ken Griffey Jr., Charles Barkley. You could just see that

they were that much better than almost all of their peers. Today, everyone is really good. The eye test is tougher, but we need a way to define greatness. So, many people have adopted championships as their metric. Those people are wrong, and I’ll tell you why.

First, I am going to exclude individual sports like Golf and Tennis. When it is 1 vs. 1, or 1 vs. the field, I do think that championships is a fine measure of greatness. It’s why Roger Federer and Venus Williams are the greatest Tennis players of all time. They have won more “majors” than anyone else.

For team sports, it frankly isn’t a fair statistic, and the waters get murkier as more players per team are involved. Championships are an even less meaningful statistic in Football (11 players) than Basketball (5 players). Let’s take for

GREATNESS

“Labeling an athlete as “great” is not as easy as it

used to be.”

41

Page 42: NURSE MATES MANAGER Lynne Top Dejadon Medical - Super …€¦ · fashionable and functional. With shoes and apparel firmly under their finger, Nurse Mates set out to expand their

instance. Robert Horry won 7 NBA championships. Allen Iverson won 0. Does that make Horry a great player and Iverson not? Of course not. Dan Marino also won 0 championships. Is he not great? Of course he is, he’s one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play football. So, how do we measure greatness? I’m glad you asked.

Luckily for you and me, we live in the era of advanced metrics. Statistics and algorithms that people much smarter than Otis Cunningham have put together. In baseball we have WHIP (Walks plus Hits per Inning Pitched) and WAR (Wins Above Replacement). In basketball we have PER (Player Efficiency Rating) and BPM (Box Plus/Minus). Lastly, Football has AV (Approximate Value) and WPA (Win Probability Added). These metrics are a significantly more meaningful way to measure a player, and determine the great from the good. Looking at these metrics shows you all you need to know. Clayton Kershaw is 4th all-

time in WHIP, but no championships. Chris Paul is 6th all-time in PER, but also no championships. Bruce Smith is 8th all-time in AV, and he too has no championships. All of these players I, and I think most people, would consider great. They have achieved just about everything that one can achieve in a career at their respective positions, but they lack a championship. Does that make them not great? No way. They are among the best ever, it’s just that their team circumstances have prevented them from winning a title.

Titles have to account for something, right? Yes they do. Titles are a great way to differentiate the greatest of the great. LeBron James and Michael Jordan are both all-time great players. Michael has more rings though. Does that make him “greater”? You can certainly make that argument. It’s why many people are now calling Tom Brady the greatest quarterback of all time, and not Peyton Manning, Joe Montana, or John Elway. All 4 players enjoyed tremendous stats and success their entire careers, but it is Tom Brady who has set the standard on championships.

“Robert Horry won 7 NBA

championships. Allen Iverson won 0. Does that make

Horry a great player and Iverson not?”

“Luckily for you and me, we live in the era of advanced

metrics.”
