Leeds and Sheffield have been worst hit by the recession according to the GMB union due to a

drop in the value of average earnings. The real value of average earnings of all employees resident in Yorkshire & The Humber has dropped by 13.3% between April 2008 and November 2012 a new GMB study of official earnings data shows. For employees resident in Leeds the drop has been 19.2% and 18.8% for those living in Sheffield the two areas in the region worst affected by the recession. In April 2008 the mean gross annual

earnings for all employees resident in the region according to the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) was £23,227. The ASHE figure for the mean gross annual earnings for all employees resident in the region for April 2012 was £23,558. This is an increase of £331 or 1.4%. Between April 2008 and November 2012 inflation has been 14.8%. This means the drop in real value of average earnings in Yorkshire and The Humber between April 2008 and November 2012 has been 13.3%. Grand Départ in Yorkshire for 2014The people of Yorkshire are proud and delighted to

welcome the world’s greatest cycle race to one of the most beautiful parts of the United Kingdom. We are honoured to have been chosen to stage the Grand Départ of the 2014 Tour de France and we are confident that the riders will find our spectacular scenery both challenging and exhilarating. Their route will take them through some of our great and historic cities, including the Roman walled city of York, Leeds - the UK’s second biggest financial centre, the stunning cathedral city of Ripon, and Sheffield, which is fast becoming known as one of Europe’s great sporting cities. They’ll wind through the glorious Yorkshire Dales National Park into the quintessential English market town of Harrogate before experiencing the dramatic rise and fall of the Pennines around Brontë country. We believe they will find the route simply breathtaking. Yorkshire and cycling go hand-in-hand. The county is widely regarded as one of the spiritual heartlands of UK cycling producing trailblazing talent like Brian Robinson, the first British rider to win a stage of the Tour de France, Barry Hoban a winner of 8 stages of the Tour de France and Malcolm Elliott

the first British rider to win a Grand Tour points jersey. Its landscape continues to inspire a new generation of star cyclists today, but it’s for the warmth of our welcome that the people of Yorkshire are best known. We love to meet new people and to make them feel at home in the place which has the nickname of God’s Own County. We know that the millions of Yorkshire men, women and children who turn out to cheer on the riders as they pass through our city streets and country lanes will give the Tour de France the warmest welcome ever. ...And there is no doubt that this enthusiasm will go from strength to strength during the third part of the Tour’s time in Britain. This stage three will link up two iconic cities: Cambridge, the renowned university town, and London, the capital, the site of a memorable Grand Départ in 2007 and of course the venue for the fantastic Olympic Games in 2012.

For the UK as a whole the drop in the real value of average earnings of all employees between April 2008 and November 2012 has been 12.8%. These figures showing a drop of 13.3 % in the real value of earnings in the region explain why we are on our way to a triple dip recession. Consumer spending is the single biggest component of demand in the economy and with the real value of wages from employment falling there is no mystery as to why the economy is in a downward spiral. The replacing of full time permanent jobs with part time and temporary lower paid jobs is part of this. In both the public and private sectors GMB is organising active local campaigns in support of a living wage of £7.45 an hour (£8.30 in London). In addition, GMB is seeking negotiated settlements in the forthcoming pay round. If such settlements are not on offer GMB has already said that ballots for strike action will be inevitable.

A living wage and pay rises to help hard pressed families as bills go through the roof are needed to boost the economy and stop the downward spiral.– Tim Roache, GMB Regional Secretary

A COMMUNITY in the path of the proposed HS2 rail link to Leeds has launched a fight back. More than 50 residents packed a hastily organised meeting at the Two Pointers pub, in Woodlesford, after reading the proposed route of the high speed railway line between Leeds and London will see an up to 14m high viaduct pass by their houses. Homeowners in the south Leeds village fear the value of their homes has already depreciated between 10 and 40 per cent. It is thought around 300 houses are affected in the area, with the Maltings, Locks and New Farmers Hill areas expected to be hardest hit, sparking calls for compensation, a change in the

route or even for the project to be scrapped. Resident James Lynch, who helped organise the meeting, told fellow residents: “It seems to have been done with eyes shut and fingers crossed as to whether it will work. “If the Government can’t afford to compensate people properly then the Government can’t afford the scheme.” At the meeting, one male resident said: “Apart from the compensation side of this we have got the actual infrastructure to put in place – it’s going to be manic, it’s going to be a construction site.” Rumours that 12 trains, six each way, will travel on the line every hour were also voiced. Coun Stewart Golton (Lib Dem, Rothwell) said: “The lack of concern for families affected by the proposals is appalling. “House sales have already fallen through, and people fear being unfairly penalised for a development that they could not have foreseen.” The plans are due for consultation. The second phase of HS2 envisages five stops on a 211-mile Y-shaped extension northwards from Birmingham, which is scheduled for completion in 2032, six years after the first phase. Officials say the £32.7bn project will create at least 100,000 jobs and dramatically cut journey times.

In the current fi nancial climate, charities both large and small have started to see a substantial drop in the quantity and value of their donations. St. Gemma’s Hospice in Moortown and Sue Ryder Wheatfi elds Hospice in Headingley are not immune to this national drop in charity giving - that is, apart from their £1 weekly Lottery.

Every week for the last 15 years, the two Leeds hospices have given away huge cash sums, all for a £1 weekly stake. In fact they have given away nearly £2.5million in cash prizes. What’s even more astounding is that even aft er they have paid out all of this prize money, they have still raised more than £3million to be spent on patient care.

Th e lottery, which started in 1997, gives away £2,000 to more than 50 lucky winners every week, with a top prize of £1,500 – all for just a £1 stake. In May 2011 they even launched their very own rollover prize, which has now been won four times and can grow up to a massive £12,000.

Th e lottery is played on a subscription basis and people can play by direct debit, by cheque or even online by visiting www.hospicelottery.co.uk.

if you would like to take out a weekly subscription to the lottery and help raise funds for your two Leeds hospices, either go online or call 0113 278 1500.

LegaL bid to save Leeds chiLd heart surgery.

Campaigners have decided to postpone a legal challenge against a decision to end child heart

surgery in Leeds. The NHS recommended in July that Leeds General Infirmary should stop surgery. The Save Our Surgery (SOS) group said it would postpone seeking a judicial review pending the results of a review ordered by the health secretary. Sir Neil McKay, chairman of the panel which made the NHS decision, said there was concern that delaying court action could put children's lives at risk. Last month the SOS group said it had filed for permission for a judicial review against the decision made by the

Joint Committee of Primary Care Trusts (JCPCT) to stop surgery at the Leeds unit and others in Leicester and London. The Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt later ordered a full review of the plans. He has asked the Independent Reconfiguration Panel to report its findings by 28 February. The campaigner's legal respresentatives will request that the action now be put on hold until the review is complete. In a statement posted on its official Facebook page, the SOS group said: "Save our Surgery is asking the court to wait until the Health Secretary's decision has been made as it is hoped the IRP will deal with the points raised by the judicial review challenge.
