The Vie ja s Band o f Kumeyaay Indians just

celebrated the 20th Anniver-sary of the Viejas Casino.

Since its ground breaking in 1991, the Casino has become a premiere gaming facility in San Diego County housing restaurants, cocktail lounges, and gaming including poker, slots, table games, bingo and off track betting – and soon a hotel.

Their success can be mea-sured in many ways. Their people have prospered and new generations are better equipped to achieve a better future. The San Diego com-munity as a whole has also gained from the generous sup-port from the tribe for schools, the arts, and community en-deavors.

“I know many have seen

endless banners around our towns that say Viejas supports our children’s activities and business activities,” said Bob Ring, president of the Alpine Mountain Empire Chamber of Commerce and manager of the Alpine Albertsons. “They have been such an incredible partner.”

Once the Viejas Casino met its goal as a leading entertain-ment destination in San Diego County, the Tribal Council con-tinued to look for ways to in-crease self-sustaining revenue for the tribal members but also to give back to the community and become a significant em-ployer in the county. This week nearly 15 employees and tribal members were awarded for 20 years of service.

Those continued efforts toward sustainment resulted in the Band’s business unit Viejas Enterprises, which oversees the Viejas Casino; Viejas Out-

let Center; Borrego Springs Bank – the first tribally-owned bank in California; three radio stations; two RV parks; Three Fires LLC and Four Fires LLC, two partnerships that have de-veloped hotels in Washington D.C. and Sacramento and California. Every year Viejas contributes nearly $2 million to local charitable organiza-tions.

This week while address-ing a group at the Casino for the anniversary celebration Viejas Chairman Anthony R. Pico said he knew the tribe would be successful because so many have worked so hard. “I know a great deal of leader-ship, dedication, loyalty, hard work, spirit, intelligence and skills were provided by many of you here tonight and that’s how we achieve success,” he said. “What we see today at Viejas Casino would not have happened without the support of the community.”

by Diana Saenger

Viejas Casino cele-brated its 20th An-niversary with several

events on September 17, 2011 at the Casino. Tribal Council and members as well as local dignitaries and invited guests gathered at the south entrance of the casino for a Tribal Bless-ing and Bird Singing.

Viejas Chairman Anthony R. Pico welcomed those gathered with some words of thanks to those who have supported and stood with the tribe dur-ing rough times. “There was a time when we were steeped in poverty, and we were stunned at the compassion and love that you all gave to us. Because liv-ing in poverty you’re removed from the rest of society. We had a feeling that everyone was against us until we decided to make a move to create our own destiny, and when we did you stood abreast with us and walked with us into the sun. For that we will be forever grate-ful and with your help we’ve been able to pull ourselves out of poverty, send our kids to school and again be the proud

people who we were thousands of years ago. So again thank you.”

Chairman Pico then intro-duced Virginia Christman to offer the smudging blessing. “She is our prayer leader, for-mer Vice Chairman and tribal culture leader, the go to person when we have issues and ques-tions because she’s steeped in our culture and the wisdom of that culture,” he said.

As Christman began the smudging blessing of burnt sage, Chairman Pico explained

its significance. “The smudging blessing is a cleansing ceremony that in our estimation rids us of negativism: negative emotion, negative energy. From our per-spective the joy and electricity it creates causes us to be in the frame of mind of goodness and forgiveness of one another.”

A host of Bird Singers were next introduced by the Chair-man. “We’re happy to have with us John Christman, a song chief and a man who has learned our music thousands of years old. He is beyond reproach in regards to hon-

esty, integrity, hard work and compassion to our people, and he served as vice chair-man and treasurer for many years in our tribe and became one of my mentors. Accom-panying him is my life long friend from the Manzanita Indiana reservation, a man of great integrity steeped in out culture and one of the last fluent speakers of the Kumeyaay language, the Chairman of the Manzanita Band of Kumeyaay Indians, the honorable Leroy Elliott.

Special crisis training program begins to begin

Trauma Intervention Pro-grams (TIP) of San Diego County, Inc. is a non-profit organization that partners with emergency responders to as-sist residents in crisis following a personal tragedy, such as the sudden death of a loved one. TIP is currently seeking volunteers to respond to the East County and National City areas to offer support services to residents. Volunteers are called to the scene by police, fire, and sheriff and are trained to help fellow citizens who are in distress as a result of a traumatic event. Volunteers respond within their commu-nity. The first few hours after a traumatic event has occurred are very confusing for everyone

involved and the TIP volun-teers are trained to provide the necessary emotional first aid and other temporary support until the persons involved in the crisis are able to depend on family, friends, and oth-ers. TIP is holding a volunteer training academy in La Mesa beginning October 13. The academy costs $45 per person and is a 50-hour training pro-gram held on week nights and weekends. No prior experience is necessary. Interested citi-zens must be at least 16 years of age and have automobile transportation, insurance, and a cell phone. We are looking for adults and teens that are available for either day or night shifts. For a complete schedule of training times and further in-formation regarding volunteer requirements, call the TIP office at (760) 931-2104, or see their website: www.tipsandiego.org.

Cedar fire survivors offer advice to Texas fire victims

As the anniversary of the Cedar Fire approaches East County residents who experienced the 2003 and

2007 fires that raced across the city and counties of San Diego, can’t help but remember and feel for those who are now suffering through the fires raging through Austin area of Texas. Nearly 1500 homes burned in the Cedar Fire, and 2300 home have been lost in the Austin area. A news reporter and photographer from an Austin newspaper came to the Lakeside area to get fire survivors perspective in the aftermath of such devastation.

David Kassel, leader of the Cedar fire Rebuild Resources Group (CFRR), met with them in a combined 10-hour in-terview. “The first week after you have lost everything there is a stare, a certain look in the eyes,” Kassel said. “The next few weeks you realize how bad it is as you start dealing with different agencies.”

Kassel, along with the reporter and photographer, went to the homes of a number of CFRR members who have rebuilt. According to Kassel, not everybody has been so fortunate. Over 40 percent of people who lost their homes have yet to rebuild. He said some couldn’t handle the process and when it got tough they didn’t have the help they needed.

Kassel welcomed the opportunity to share his knowledge with fire survivors in Texas and hoped they would have the help they will need to navigate the paper work and agencies they will have to deal with. “It will be important to get city and county involved to guide people through the process and get-ting matched up to the right resources,” Kassel said.

After the Bird Singers Chair-man Pico presented several people with 20-year service awards. Tribal council mem-bers gathered to cut the ribbon at the front door of the casino and then stepped inside where guests were crowed around a large cake. A VIP reception followed in the DreamCatcher. Images of the early years of Viejas played on two video screens throughout the night.

Chairman Pico was pre-sented proclamations from County Supervisor Dianne Jacob, California State Sena-tor Joel Anderson and Bob Ring, president of the Alpine Mountain Empire Chamber of Commerce. He then wel-comed those in attendance and introduced the tribal council. “It’s humbling to be here when I look back on the 20 years,” he said. “I knew we were going to be successful be-cause a lot of people worked very hard to make it happen. We weathered storms and did what our ancestors and elders told us to do – to never give up. We couldn’t have done this without the community and their support. I thank you, and Viejas thanks you as we share our success with the community of Alpine and all of San Diego County.”

Bedtime story

Darlene was sitting on her grandfather’s lap as he read her a bedtime story. From time to time, she would take her

eyes off the book and reach up to touch his wrinkled cheek. She was alternately stroking her own cheek, then his again. Finally she spoke up, ‘Grandpa, did God make you?’

‘Yes, darling,’ he answered, ‘God made me a long time ago.’

‘Oh,’ Darlene paused, ‘Grandpa, did God make me too?’

‘Yes, indeed, poppet,’ he said, ‘God made you just a little while ago.’

Feeling their respective faces again, Darlene observed, ‘God’s getting better at it, isn’t he?’

Mea l s -on-Whee l s Greater San Diego, Inc. (MOWGSD),

is the proud recipient of a $50,000 Building the Future Vision Grant awarded by the Walmart Foundation and Meals on Wheels Association of America (MOWAA). The Walmart Foundation gave 5 million dollars to MOWAA to help fight senior hunger. A por-tion of funds ($1 million), was awarded to Meals on Wheels agencies throughout the U.S. as Vision Grant recipients.

Here in San Diego the Vision Grant funds will be used to cre-ate a new menu model that can be replicated by other Meals on Wheels agencies across the nation. The model entitled “Embracing the Senior Pal-ate” will enhance the quality and variety of menu options to meet the future needs of an ever-growing, ethnically di-verse, preference-driven senior population. MOWGSD’s first new menu offering will be the addition of a “Healthy Latin Cuisine.”

“Embracing the Senior Pal-ate” is in direct response to the changing demographics within San Diego County based on the recent US Census report. “Our goal is to sustain our home meal delivery service for generations to come, by responding to emerging se-nior preferences while still maintaining proper nutritional values and providing healthy choices,” said Debbie Case, Meals-on-Wheels Greater San Diego, Inc.’s President and CEO.

The “Embracing the Senior Palate” model developed in San Diego may be adopted by other agencies to create addi-tional flavorful and in demand menus, such as Asian Cuisine, organic, gluten-free or vegetar-ian menus.

“Most people don’t realize how complex it is to create a variety of nutritious and tasty menu options for our seniors”, comments Case. “We serve almost 400,000 meals a year and provide many of our

seniors with all of their meals. We must factor in the proper sodium, fat and calorie levels and offer specialized menus such as diabetic-friendly. A lot of variety has been added to our menus recently with the addition of fresh tuna, healthy wraps and sugar free desserts. As we develop our Healthy Latin Cuisine menu to better serve Hispanic seniors, we hope to cater to all of our cli-ent’s taste buds!”

The new Healthy Latin Cui-sine menu will be created by MOWGSD’s nutritionist to ensure that all meals adhere to senior nutritional requirements within the mix of existing week-ly menus. Additionally, a Com-munity Outreach Specialist will be hired to engage and inform the Hispanic community about our new menu offering.

“We are here to offer choice to our senior clients, not to be a last resort for home delivered meals”, said Debbie Case. MOWGSD subsidizes every senior meal delivered. “We

know that seniors are among those hardest hit by hunger in San Diego County. Many are homebound and rely on com-munity volunteer programs like ours to help put food on the table,” shares Ms. Case. “Our seniors are our family, our friends, our neighbors, and our loved ones. They deserve the very best we can deliver.”

About Meals-On-Wheels, Greater San Diego: The im-pact that Meals-on-Wheels has on the people it serves goes far beyond the wholesome meals it provides. Meals-on-Wheels’ staff and its volunteers often develop friendships with the seniors as well as providing regular nutrition and daily con-tact. In addition to the meals, volunteers also provide a safety check, to ensure that senior clients are safe and well. With-out continued meal delivery, many seniors would not have a connection to the outside world. For over 50 years, Meals-on-Wheels Greater San Diego, Inc. has and continues to contribute to the overall well-

being of seniors by providing regular nutrition and daily contact with a caring volun-

teer. Learn more at www.meals-on-wheels.org or call 800.5.SENIOR.

Building self confidencesteps needed on a daily basis to reach those goals.

Caring for ourselves needs to happen on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. This is the way to recharge our batteries. Think of all the things we do for everyone else and then realize how much we don’t do for ourselves. How about occasionally treating ourselves with the same regard we treat a favorite family member or friend?

Nurturing ourselves doesn’t have to be time consuming or costly. We can take a drive to the beach and sit in the sand. Or take a long bath, light some candles and put on some favor-ite music. Maybe call a friend or family member we haven’t heard from in a long time will be special treat on both ends. How about letting a spouse know when it’s time to visit

a favorite restaurant or even treat ourselves to lunch.

Life is hectic; so it’s impor-tant to recharge those batteries and open the doors to love others, relax and rid ourselves of resentment and frustration.

Why does it seem more and more like our na-tion is pulling away

from God? Is it my imagination? What is happening?

Signed, Patriotic Christian

dear patriotic christian, It’s amazing to see how our val-

ues have shifted away from God over time. Proverbs 22:28 “Do not remove the ancient landmark

which your fathers have set.” Our Founding Fathers set the landmarks for the United States upon the Bible and God’s principles. This is evident in many of our patriotic songs, for example, America the Beautiful and the song written by Katherine L. Bates with the powerful line, “America, America God mend thine every flaw, confirm thy soul in self control, thy liberty in law.”

We must understand God is Sovereign and Almighty, Psalm 107:25. When is the sin of a nation enough in the eyes of God? Does God have a sin gauge? We can see in God’s Word when He said, “That’s enough.” Genesis 18:20, “And the Lord said, “Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave,” Also, read 2 Chronicles 7:13.

Friends, there will be a time when the gauge of sin reads full. My question for this nation has been, “Lord, are we getting close to full?” We must remember, God’s judgment is not just fire and brimstone, sometimes, God just simply removes His protection. Isaiah 22:8a, “He removed the protection of Judah.” These are things some Christians do not want to talk about, but we must face reality so we can make a difference for our nation. Jeremiah 18:7-10, “The instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, to pull down, and to destroy it, if that nation against whom I have spoken turns from its evil, I will relent of the disaster that I thought to bring upon it. And the instant I speak concerning a nation and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it, if it does evil in My sight so that it does not obey My voice, then I will relent concerning the good with which I said I would benefit it.”

Have we removed the ancient landmark of our nation? Prayer is taken out of schools. Abortions are performed without parent’s permission. God’s commandments are taken out of our courtrooms. A few atheists demand Christianity out of government and public life. What is worse? To offend God, undermine this nation’s founda-tion and jeopardize the souls of our children. Or to hurt a few people’s feelings who do not like God? Nahum 1:3.

Let’s love the Lord our God with all of our heart, all of our mind and all of our souls. Jesus is madly in love with us. We can change our nation, one person at a time if we will pray and obey. Psalm 33:12, “Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people He has chosen as His own inheritance.” Our hope is Jesus Christ.

I want to invite you to our church, A Touch From Above, on Sundays at 10 a.m., 16145 Hwy 67, Ramona, CA.

Mr. Politician, leave the middle-class aloneRev. James L. Snyder

I’m not quite sure where the term “middle class” came from. I can never

remember using it in any con-versations I’ve ever had. In fact, the only time I hear the phrase is when some politician is speaking. From the context of the speech, I am quite sure he or she does not know what the phrase means, either.

My wife and I were talking about that just this past week. The thing we could not quite figure out is, are we middle-class? And if we are middle-class, what in the world does it mean? And, when do we graduate?

In high school, I was neither in the middle of my class nor at the upper end. Unfortunately, I did not even come in last in my graduating class, for someone beat me to that fine distinction. My educational career was not a class act, to be sure.

I understand what the word “middle,” means. And I know the word, “class.” What does it mean when you put them both together and use it in a sentence?

When I’m in the middle of a project, I am not at the

beginning and the end is a far piece away. When I hear the word class, I am thinking of homework, teachers and all that jazz. Who wants to be a teenager the second time around? I’ve had enough of that in my lifetime.

I’m not quite sure about all this middle-class politicalizing and I sure do not want to be the target of some political agenda. I would like to spon-sor a bill that would outlaw this phrase for any elected official. If perchance they do mention the phrase, it’s a go-to-jail and don’t collect $100 act.

Maybe we can come up with a new term. We have the term “racist” that people use at their discretion. Maybe we can coin a phrase like “middle-classist” and forbid its use in polite society. Of course, how many politicians are really found in polite society? Or, how many polite society venues would welcome a politician?

If we try hard enough, we can make it one of the most offensive phrases in the Eng-lish language. So offensive, that people will stop using it. Of course, they would have to come up with some other phrase and then we are back in first grade again.

To be honest, this problem of the “middle-classist” is not a Republican or a Democrat issue. One side is as guilty as the other side. And, as we all know, a politician by any other name is still a rascal.

Every politician courts the middle-class, and what a blushing bride she makes. All through the election, this “middle-classist” politician will romance those he believes are middle-class. And many of the middle-class falls for it. The courtship is wonderful; it’s the marriage that really stinks. This is the only case in which I would cast an approving eye toward divorce.

The middle-class raises most of the money that gets these politicians elected who then in turn refuses returning the favor. After elected this “middle-clas-sist” politician chums around with high-class people and then passes legislation that only benefits the lower class people whoever they are.

Wherefore art thou, O mid-dle-class?

Certainly not on the agenda of this “middle-classist” politi-cian.

The middle-class comes in at tax time. Hooray for the middle-class. I wonder if anybody has ever given the thought that most of the money in Washington DC has come from this group called the middle-class.

The middle-class can help the neophyte politician get his political dream job with all the benefits that goes with it but the politician does not seem to know how to help other people

get jobs for themselves. History has shown us that they know how to spend money but when it comes to saving money, they come to a stupefied and stut-tering halt.

Middle-class money earned by middle-class people work-ing at middle-class jobs goes to Washington DC to be used by “middle-classist” politicians for everything but middle-class concerns. When will the insan-ity stop?

In the Old Testament, the Jewish law required that every seventh year be a year of rest. Although I am not Jewish, I think there is something to be said for this kind of rest. I pro-pose that the middle-class be given its due sabbatical.

How many years have we’ve been working and then giving our money to Washington DC? We deserve a rest. If these “middle-classist” politi-cians look so kindly towards the middle-class, why not give all of us middle-class people a sabbatical where we do not pay any taxes. We certainly will work, but all the money we would normally send to Washington DC , we put in our own pocket.

Now, that’s change I can believe in.

In fact, I have biblical author-ity for all of this. Authority from the mouth of Jesus himself. “And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s. And they marveled at him” (Mark 12:17 KJV ).

Not all those “middle-clas-sist” politicians in Washington give a second thought to the middle-class. I think it is about time we gave them as much thought.

I believe the primary prob-lem in America is that we no longer know what belongs to Caesar what belongs to God. If we can ever figure that out again, “happy days are here again.”

Going over our church finances I found a receipt from a local paint store signed by someone named Christian.

I wasn’t aware of anyone buying paint, so I called the store to point out its mistake

‘I’m sorry,’ I told the manager, ‘but there are no Christians here at St Mary’s Church.’

Remaining in busi-ness for 35 years is a milestone, and being

energetic and pleased with the business is something to be proud of. That’s the case for Robert Bates, owner of Al-Max Sanitation. Bates bought the company from Al and Maxine Porter in1982.

“Al started the business in 1966, and built a truck and sold the business to me,” said Bates who already had an idea of what the sanitation business required. When he was in high school Bates and a friend went door to door looking for work. He then went to work for Casey Company emptying Porta Pottis and eventually bought some of their units to work on his own.

As business picked up after acquiring Al-Max, Bates real-ized he needed another truck. “I hired someone, and we started building a truck to col-lect the sanitation,” Bates said. “We’d buy a chassis, have the tank built and buy our own pumps. I still do that today as I don’t like the trucks you buy.”

Today Al-Max operates 10 trucks that handle a variety of jobs including: pumping and cleaning of septic tanks, electronic locating of septic tanks, certification of sep-tic tank inspection for home buyers, grease trap cleaning for restaurants and car wash sumps cleaning. The company has 20 employees in various aspects of the company. “We do everything from homes to big companies,” Bates said. “We do Sea World and San Diego Zoo’s grease traps and pick up about any liquid waste that’s not hazardous.”

Inquiring minds probably want to know where all of

those products end up. The sewage goes to San Diego City’s treatment plant. “We bring the grease back to our Santee location, squeeze the water out of it, which goes to the city sewer, and the solids go the landfill,” Bates said. “The car wash waste, which is mostly mud, goes to L. A.”

Although Bate’s operation is working fairly smoothly, there are always challenges for busi-nesses. California smog rules require the diesel trucks to be newly smogged at $20,000 each. Bates said buying new trucks would run $120,000, which leaves little wiggle room. He must complete a third of his fleet by the first of the year.

“We’ll adapt,” Bates said. “Even though the restaurant trade has cut back we’re doing okay. There’s some increase in added growth with people moving out into the suburbs.”

Bates is modest but their company policy is probably one reason they keep loyal customers coming back. Their slogan – Best People + Best Equipment and Know How = Best Job, is not just a saying. It starts with training. “We have new employees ride with a driver for four to six months to learn the different types of septic tanks, different systems and we have brochures that ex-plain things,” Bates said. “We have one worker that does the locating and digging and most of our drivers have been here a long time. We’ve had two managers retire from here.”

Septic tanks come in differ-ent sizes. Before 1956 they were about 700 gallons with three compartments. After that, most are pre-fabbed and can average 1000, 1200, or 1500 gallons. Al-Max has septic tanks that are 20,000 gallons

and grease tanks 30,000 gal-lons.

When to get a tank pumped depends on the size of the family and use. Bates said three to four years is normal. He advises not to put any additives into the tank, even products that claim to be good for septic tanks. “Basically people think they need to aid bacteria, but bacteria itself aids bacteria,” he said. “A septic tank has two compartments and forms a mat on the top of the liquid level and has bac-teria always eating on it and breaking out a sludge which forms on the bottom. That’s what has to be pumped out because once that goes out into leach fields it could mean a major repair. Adding other chemicals to the tank will in-crease the sludge bottom and require pumping more often.”

Bates said anything that kills bacteria is bad for the system, including household bleach, but used in moderation it’s not a problem. I asked about salt since of some of the cosmetic products today contain salt products, but that doesn’t hurt the tank. One major problem can be a soft water system because it sends continuous

water into the tank. The same hazard occurs with a leaky faucet or toilet that constantly runs. “Your tank has to rest,” Bates said. “The ground where the leach lines are is like a big sponge and will take only so much water. If there is a con-tinuous leak it will soon back up your system.”

Review by Casey Lind

An ordinary summer transforms into an adventure of a life-

time when Sawyer, (Nathan Gamble), a young boy strug-gling with summer school, comes upon an injured dol-phin. Dolphin Tale is a heart-warming story based on true events that ultimately touches the life of Sawyer, his family, and friends in a unique way.

As Sawyer is riding his bike to school one day he comes upon a dolphin whose tail is caught in a crab trap. He cuts off the ropes and soon the dolphin is taken to the Clearwater Marine Hospital. Sawyer begins to bond with the dolphin, even-

tually called Winter (played by real-life rescued dolphin, Winter). Sadly, the Clearwater Marine Hospital is facing a hopeless situation and is in the midst of a financial crisis. There is no money to be found from donors. Sawyer has been a moody young boy so news that Winter may not get the help it needs is a challenge for him.

This lesson really hits home when Sawyer’s cousin, Kyle (Austin Stowell), returning from service in the military, is also plagued with physical challenges. All hope seems lost, and yet through optimism and positive persistence on the part of Winter and Sawyer, and Sawyer caring for some-

one other than himself, things change.

Helping in the transition is the gentle and wise Dr. Mc-Carthy (Morgan Freeman). He reminds Kyle that he’s not bro-ken, still has much to offer and no matter what the odds might look like, there is always hope. Freeman, in his stereotypical role as the wise and stable doc-tor, infuses McCarthy with the courage to take a chance and create the first-ever prosthetic tail fin for a dolphin.

Harry Connick, Jr., is sur-prising in his portrayal of Dr. Clay Haskett, the lead veteri-narian of the Marine Hospital. Connick, Jr. is genuine as

Haskett who carries out his responsibilities as a parent, lover of animals, and head

of the hospital quite well. Performances by Ashley Judd (Sawyer’s mother), and Kris Kristofferson (Dr. Haskett’s fa-ther), are genuine, though av-erage. Many of the extras in the film are actual real volunteers from the Marine Hospital in Florida. One of the unexpected stars, and clearly an audience favorite, was Rufus, a curious, nosey, and persistent pelican who seems to always show up at just the wrong moment!

I liked these positive messag-es in the movie; because you may be injured or perceived to be different by others, that doesn’t mean you’re broken or useless, and that those with disabilities are special individuals and with someone by their side, the can conquer any battle. Even Sawyer goes from moody to a boy full of joy. It’s great, too, that kids get to see Winter beating all odds and determined, along with the help from others, to recover.

Dolphin Tale, distributed in 3D and 2D, is good for all ages who will enjoy the beautiful marine life as depicted in the movie and be impacted by the heartwarming relationship be-tween Sawyer and the injured dolphin.

Review by Diana Saenger

Because of its main theme of a baseball team out

of funds – Moneyball could have been boring, especially considering today’s daily eco-nomic news coverage. Fortu-nately, writers Steven Zaillian (Schindler’s List) and Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network) have elevated this true story adapted from Michael Lewis’ 2003 book, Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game to a smart film which should be enjoyed by a wide audience.

Director Bennett Miller’s (Capote) vision creates a story far more dramatic than the book, so the movie never becomes a scoreboard. Lead actor Brad Pitt adds even more validation and part of the reason why Moneyball may appear on several upcoming Academy-Award nomination lists.

Billy Beane (Pitt), a quiet

worrier, is a family man now divorced who sees his daugh-ter only on visiting days. He’s also a washed-up baseball star currently serving as general manager and a minority owner of the Oakland Athletics. Billy has plenty to worry about in the upcoming 2002 season. The team lost their most valu-able payers including Jason Giambi, Johnny Damon and Jason Isringhausen; and the owner lacks money to pay big salaries.

As the old scouts set around a room debating who to ac-quire for the new season, a funny – or irritating depending on your outlook – moment takes place when they begin to consider players by how their wives look! Billy has a surprise for them. He’s just met Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), a recent Yale grad and an econom-ics genius who has dissected the game of baseball like a surgeon. Not quite sold on Brand’s explanations about not

focusing on high salary players but instead on stats that make little sense, Billy throws this idea out. The men look at him like he’s trying to sell a whale to a zoo. When Billy assures them he’s not asking but telling them everything about their season picks is about to change, most jump ship.

Billy soon appears to have stepped on a mine because no one is supporting him except Peter. The team loses games because the players don’t get it, and manager Art Howe (Philip Seymour Hoffman) not only thinks Billy has lost it, but adamantly refuses to follow his orders on where to place certain players.

Pitt’s portrayal of Billy ends up far from any pretty-boy roles that come to mind, and it’s obvious why he hung on for the years it took to finally get a green light for Moneyball. Pitt methodically brings every moment of angst plaguing Billy to the screen. Because he does this so well it’s easy to feel Billy’s pain. Every decision he makes seems quickly arrived at – that is until we glimpse him in deep thought while straddled on a bunch of bleacher chairs or turning around midway on a highway because his daughter Casey (Kerris Dorsey) tells him he needs to be at a game. And then we realize that Billy puts his heart into every decision he makes.

Hoffman’s role may not be worthy of a bow like many he’s played before, but Mon-eyball belongs to Pitt, so it works. As the young girl who worries about her dad losing

everything, Dorsey gives a sweet performance. She does a great job singing Lenka’s “The Show.” The lyrics “I’m just a little girl lost in the mo-ment” mirror the expressions on Dorsey’s intuitive face.

Hill is thoroughly entertain-ing as Peter. Movie fans who don’t know him from Get Him to the Greek or Superbad will not forget this outstanding performance. Hill hits the self-prescribed geek on the head, makes us laugh when he’s stone-faced and perplexed and adore him every time his character has Billy’s back.

Non-baseball fans need not worry about an excessive amount of baseball play in this movie. Moneyball balances humor, a heartfelt story and an inspirational true event that brings everyone to the handrail cheering, clapping, and surprised by some real baseball trivia.

Broadway/San Diego ~ A Nederlander Presentation, NET-

works Presentations, LLC and Blue Man Productions are pleased to announce a new theatrical touring pro-duction of Blue Man Group at San Diego’s Civic Theatre, September 20 – 25, as part of Broadway/San Diego’s 2011-2012 35th Anniversary Season.

Best known for multi-media performances that feature three bald and blue characters the critically acclaimed Group creates experiences that defy categorization. The Blue Man Group takes the audience on a journey that is funny, intel-ligent and visually stunning with accompaniment from a live band, whose haunting tribal rhythms help drive the show to its climax. The East County Gazette got to ques-tion Patrick Newton, one of the Blue Men.

Q. How did you become a blue man?

PN: It’s a pretty long pro-cess. I first submitted my infor-mation on the Blue Man web-site while I was finishing my degree. I was called in for an audition and drove to Chicago where the first round was held. From there I went to New York City for a kind of blue man “bootcamp,” and was hired to

begin training. One year later I officially had the job.

Q. What’s made this group able to keep performing after so many years?

PN: Blue Man Group has the uncanny ability of staying relevant in a fast paced world, while remaining true to their core at the same time. This is hard to find in theatre and entertainment in general, and I think people see this and identify with it.

Q. You received a degree in musical theatre performance from Western Michigan Univer-sity. Did classes there prepare you for this career?

PN: Yes. I graduated in 2008 from Western and it was one of the best experiences of my life. Not only because I had a great time, but because I truly believe my education there and the classes I took prepared me for a job that requires musi-cal and theatrical skill, and an ability to be constantly chang-ing and evolving.

Q. You’ve studied voice, theatre and dance. What are some of the productions you’ve appeared in?

PN: I have been in a lot of different productions. Some of

my favorites include A Little Night Music, Dracula, and the regional premier of The Great American Trailer Park Musical.

Q. How difficult is what you do on stage?

PN: It has proven to be far more challenging and reward-ing than I ever thought. It’s a lot of work putting on a show that demands such a high level

First-ever theatrical tour of Blue Man Group now at the Civic Theatre

Patrick Newton

of energy and focus, but the payoff is extremely satisfying.

Q. What’s the team dynam-ics like?

PN: There are three Blue Men on stage almost the entire course of the show as well as four band members who are perched up in lofts and play the show’s score. This show is directed by Marcus Miller.

Q. What are you most anx-ious about when the curtain goes up?

PN: I don’t get anxious any more, but I do get to-tally amped. When the show starts, I know what is about to happen to us, to the audi-ence, and the journey that we are al l about to take together, and it is incredibly thrilling.

Anyone looking for a four-door sedan that can haul the family

down the road in a split second? Then take the 300 Chrysler SRT8 out for a spin. As far as this heavy sport sedan heavy is not a negative; in fact it adds to the drive. Slide a 6.4-Liter V8 Hemi engine with Fuel Saver Technology under the hood and this monster engine produces 465 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 465 lb-ft of torque at 4,200 rpm. It get 14 MPG in the city and 23 on the open road, but remember true mileage varies with the foot on the pedal.

The SRT8 is backed by a high-performance W5A580 5-speed electronically con-trolled automatic transmission that provides an exceptionally smooth ride and shifting, while reducing fuel consumption. The AutoStick driver-interac-tive transaxle shifter provides

clutchless manual shifting. I am not a big fan of autosticks, but this one worked flawlessly. Still, if I’m going to shift manually I want a clutch pedal to challenge me. The vehicle provides Hill Descent, which allows the car to sit on a hill at a light or stop sign, and when the driver rolls off the brake pedal to the gas pedal the SRT8 will wait for the transition. The rain brake support, ready alert braking and all of these features can be explained in detail at www.chrysler.com.

The stylish exterior includes a blacked out grill, 20-inch x 9.0-inch aluminum SRT8 rims mounted on 245/45ZR20, and all-season performance tires with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System. The interior is lush and supportive with quality leather on the steering wheel, a shift knob, sporty leather bucket seats – stitched with SRT8 into the headrests – front driver and passenger ventilated front seats and cup holders up front that can be chilled.

I tried the Chrysler UCon-nect Voice Command system with my Bluetooth phone and it hooked up with ease and ever time I got back into the car my phone synched up with no problem. The voice commands were the best – no distractions so all eyes are on the road.

Everything about the 300 SRT8 screams comfort and performance, and the folks in the back seat get all the com-forts of home. There is tons of room for activities such as gro-cery shopping, golfing, soccer, baseball or football practice.

This car does it all and for

a base price of $47,170. My tester hit the scales at $55,225 plus tax and license. I need to mention that the Customer Preferred Package 21SX op-tions includes power folding mirrors, adaptive cruise con-trol, forward collision warn-ing, blind spot and cross path detection, rear fog lights and exterior mirrors with supple-mental signals, and exterior. This package is $19,995 and worth the price.

Anyone interested in this vehicle should build it at www.chrysler.com or check out the 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8 at a local Chrysler dealer.

As the stage was be-ing set for the 36th annual KGB Sky

Show at Qualcomm Stadium last Saturday following the SDSU versus Washington State football game, the 57,286 in attendance had already wit-nessed an impressive Aztecs fireworks display of its own. A win in front of a huge crowd lit up the scoreboard with 21 unanswered points.

That forced three turnovers (two interceptions, one fumble) and a run of the ball against the Cougars of 100-yards. All of this was accomplished in the fourth quarter, en route to an impressive 42-24 Aztecs comeback victory.

A new era began under new head coach Rocky Long. For the first time in 30 years the Aztecs are 3-0 to start the season. With this victory SDSU snapped a 19 consecutive game loss streak to the for-mer Pac-10, now Pac-12, and broke a 23-game losing streak to BCS conference teams.

“I knew they were a good football team,” said Rocky Long. “That has nothing to do with what league they’re in. I thought both teams were equal talent wise. Both teams executed sometimes and not

others. We hung in there long enough to win the game.”

For the Aztecs it was the Lindley/Hillman show. Ryan Lindley, the Aztecs senior quar-terback (El Capitan), threw for 273 yards completing 21-37, tossing two touchdowns. Both of his touchdown passes were to tight-end Gavin Escobar. The second touchdown pass was a remarkable comeback with 2:49 left in the game.

Great running backs win games in the fourth quarter.

Aztecs explode their own fireworksSan Diego State running back Ronnie Hillman was sensa-tional. Gaining 103-yards through three quarters of play, Hillman scored on runs of 13, 12, and one yard. The sophomore sensation then broke loose in the fourth quarter churning up big runs. With less than eight minutes left in the contest, Hillman then made it a no-contest, icing the game on a spec-tacular 59-yard burst down the sideline and sealing the victory. He finished the game with 191 yards on 32 carries.

He also caught two passes for 31 yards.

It was a notable swarm-ing Rocky Long defense that crushed any hopes of victory for Washington State. Making all the correct adjustments, the Aztecs ‘D’ made all the right plays, applying a ‘pres-sure cooker’ second half pass rush to an otherwise effective Lobbestael. The opposing quarterback was sacked four times. This helped negate a Cougars offensive attack limiting them to three punts, a

fumble, and two interceptions on their final six possessions. It was a fourth quarter fumble by Lobbestael that setup the Hill-man’s game deciding touch-down jaunt at the 7:26 mark of the last quarter.

Middle linebacker Jake Fely led the Aztecs defense with six tackles. After an unprec-edented 34-3 basketball sea-son under legendary SDSU head coach Steve Fisher last year, the Aztecs football team continues the schools’ win-ning ways with a group of

play-experienced youngsters providing depth, mixed well with seasoned veterans. First year head coach Rocky Long’s team knows how to win.

“This is only the third week of the season. So far, we‘ve been pretty good,” said Long.

The Aztecs (3-0) will chal-lenge their former head coach Brady Hoke when they play the University of Michigan (3-0) in Ann Arbor MI. Kickoff is slated for 9 a.m. PDT on Saturday.
