NEVADA JOINT UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT & OPTIONS Oonis Dear Community Members, Parents, and Students of Western Nevada County, It is with great pleasure that I write this message and invite you to enjoy this “snapshot” of the Nevada Joint Union High School District (NJUHSD) and all that we offer to our students and to our community. I have served in the role of district superintendent for the past year and a half, and I am very proud to share with the community this informational overview of the curricular and extra-curricular opportunities that are available for students in our community who are in grades 9-12. Included, as well, is a celebration of our most recent graduates and their post-secondary plans. We congratulate the NJUHSD Class of 2012! As we look forward to 2012-2013, I want to say thank you to the community and to share with ourresidents a quick glance at what makes the school community and its students something of which you can be truly proud. It is the responsibility of the District to provide as many opportunities to our students as possible. As its super- intendent, I will continue to lead our district with the best interests of all students and their parents in mind. Clearly, the fiscal reality for schools is such that it is challenging to maintain programs and support services with less and less government funding. That, coupled with lowering enrollment in our schools, countywide, has required school leaders to adjust in order to maintain fiscal solvency. During this challenging time, the District will do all that it responsibly can to support its curricular and extra-curricular offerings. All of the schools in NJUHSD are innovating curriculum delivery, activity planning, and scheduling, as well as expanding student support and opportunities by restructuring services, increasing flexibility and devel- oping more options for individualized learning. I invite those families who are not yet enrolled in a school in our district to become familiar with all that we offer, and to realize all of the wonderful opportunities that are available. Our graduates are proof that there is something for every student in the Nevada Joint Union High School District. Sincerely, Superintendent “When I came into high school, I was afraid I would never see my friends because of the size of NU. &OPTIONSO!o"#$n%&i'sDear Community Members, Parents, and Students of Western Nevada County,

It is with great pleasure that I write this message and invite you to enjoy this “snapshot” of the Nevada Joint Union

High School District (NJUHSD) and all that we offer to our students and to our community.

I have served in the role of district superintendent for the past year and a half, and I am very proud to share with

the community this informational overview of the curricular and extra-curricular opportunities that are available for

students in our community who are in grades 9-12.

Included, as well, is a celebration of our most recent graduates and their post-secondary plans. We congratulate

the NJUHSD Class of 2012! As we look forward to 2012-2013, I want to say thank you to the community and to

share with ourresidents a quick glance at what makes the school community and its students something of which

you can be truly proud.

It is the responsibility of the District to provide as many opportunities to our students as possible. As its super-

intendent, I will continue to lead our district with the best interests of all students and their parents in mind.

Clearly, the fiscal reality for schools is such that it is challenging to maintain programs and support services

with less and less government funding. That, coupled with lowering enrollment in our schools, countywide,

has required school leaders to adjust in order to maintain fiscal solvency. During this challenging time, the

District will do all that it responsibly can to support its curricular and extra-curricular offerings.

All of the schools in NJUHSD are innovating curriculum delivery, activity planning, and scheduling, as well

as expanding student support and opportunities by restructuring services, increasing flexibility and devel-

oping more options for individualized learning. I invite those families who are not yet enrolled in a school

in our district to become familiar with all that we offer, and to realize all of the wonderful opportunities

that are available. Our graduates are proof that there is something for every student in the Nevada Joint

Union High School District.

Sincerely,

Superintendent

Page 2: NUJHS Options and Opportunities

Bear River High School (BRHS) and Nevada Union High School (NUHS) are comprehensive high schools that serve

grades 9-12. They are committed to academic excellence and are cornerstones of the community that surrounds and supports them. Available courses offer students a rigorous curriculum and a course selection that offers preparation for post-secondary studies and career planning. These award-winning schools provide students with numerous co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities. We are planning for a limited number of students to be able to take a blend of online courses and regular classroom courses and

retain NU or Bear River enrollment status.

Pioneer High School is a credit recovery program on the Bear River campus where juniors and seniors develop life skills and work skills. The staff customizes its program to meet the individual needs of each student. Caring and supportive teachers use weekly student/teacher meetings to monitor success and the teachers communicate on a weekly basis with parents and guardians.

NU Tech High School is a continuation high school for juniors and seniors located on the Nevada Union High School campus provides each student an opportunity to complete the required academic courses of instruction to graduate from high school and the opportunity to receive alternative work experiences and occupational training. This school provides extensive opportunities for personal growth through counseling, individualized interaction with school staff and meaningful school and community activities.

Ghidotti Early College High School provides a rigorous, focused learning environment through a small, personalized academic program. It bridges the divide between high school and college and makes higher

education more accessible by reducing financial barriers. GECHS has been recognized for its academic excellence.

Silver Springs High School is a choice for students who are in need of making up credits. Park Avenue Alternative Education Center provides a non-college prep curriculum for students who have fallen behind. Many students have found success in this small and supportive school

environment. Although many students plan to attend SSHS and return to the comprehensive schools (Bear RIver or NU), they enjoy the small and nurturing environment and choose to graduate from Silver Springs H.S. Some students catch up quickly and even graduate early.

Sierra Foothill High School is a half-day program for seniors who are significantly behind in credits. SFHS provides a supportive environment. Students must be within one year of becoming 18 years of age. Students are allowed to take the GED test (General Educational Development) within a 60-day window prior to their 18th birthday. Upon reaching the age of 18, students test successfully or transfer to Adult Education to continue test preparation.

Sierra Mountain High School is a college preparatory high school delivered through an independent studies format, offering support labs for one on one and small group tutoring, instruction, and assistance. Students may enroll in either standard (textbook) or online course delivery with opportunities to enroll in courses at Sierra College, Bear River, and/or Nevada Union. If a student would like to participate in competitive sports, they may do so through Sierra Mountain High School at Nevada Union! Opportunities for ROP and Work Experience Education are also available.

The Adult Education program offers High School Diploma for Adults: Adults may attend either a night class or receive coursework on an independent studies format in order to fulfill the requirements of a high

school diploma through Nevada Union Adult Education. This year 15 adults completed all coursework, earning certified high school diplomas!General Educational Development (GED) tests are a group of five subject tests which, when passed, certify that the taker has high school-level academic skills. This year, 72 members of our adult community obtained their GED certificate through the NJUHSD Adult Education program!
