New Zealand is a small place at the end of the world. Yet, it is among the world leaders in the agri-food sector and a notable player in the food export markets.

This is a position that can only be held with a healthy dose of both attitude and aptitude, in equal measures.

We have a small community of food producers that manages to stay competitive despite logistical disadvantages, high land values and without the subsidies available to farmers elsewhere in the world.

There is a long way to go and we must ensure we are well equipped for the journey.

THE NUFFIELD NEW ZEALANDFARMING SCHOLARSHIPA life-changing experience that accelerates leadership development, unlocks individual potential, broadens horizons through study and experience, with a view to fast track the development of emerging leaders in our agri-food sector.

A GLOBAL NETWORKIn the aftermath of the Second World War Lord Nuffield, industrialist and philanthropist, initiated a travelling scholarship scheme for British and Empire farmers. The reason was twofold – to recognise their contribution to feeding the nation through the war and as a method of advancing best practice in agriculture around the world.

The first two scholars were selected in 1947. Since then Nuffield scholars have created an unrivalled network of agriculturalists who are at the leading edge of their profession worldwide.

Each year, the seven countries now participating in the scheme award more than 70 scholarships to young agriculturalists. All newly selected scholars meet at the Contemporary Scholars Conference to exchange

experience and knowledge and gain understanding of agriculture of the host nation.

Nuffield International is a non-profit organisation administered professionally and provides general guidance and support to the member countries which manage their own agricultural scholarship programmes annually as part of building the most important resource in agriculture – human capital. The national scholarship programmes are funded by voluntary contributions from their own investor partners and local corporates and primary sector organisations.

International Scholarships are provided each year to applicants from non-member countries.

More information on Nuffield International can be found at nuffieldinternational.org

ABOUT THE PROGRAMMEThe Nuffield Farming Scholarships are one of New Zealand’s most valuable and prestigious awards in the primary industry sector, nationally and internationally, and part of a global agri-food network promoting global vision, leadership and innovation

The programme offers an incredible opportunity that will benefit careers, industry and business through advancing personal leadership development. There is strong representation by Nuffield alumni in New Zealand’s leading companies and organisations. Nuffielders are also providing leadership in on-farm innovations in New Zealand.

Following a competitive selection process, the chosen scholars embark on a unique global learning experience with opportunities for collaboration, networking and mentoring, to fast track their thinking and leadership skills to the next level.

The 12-month programme allows participants to spend time away from the business and travel to observe, immerse, reflect and learn about global agricultural practices and the contexts they are operating in. The experience helps scholars gain new insights and ideas to bring back to New Zealand to share, implement and influence positively, decisions that affect the agri-food sector and our rural communities.

The Nuffield global network provides scholars with access to international leaders in the agri-food sector, and the best production, management and marketing systems around the globe.

New Zealand scholars have been hosted by institutions, organisations and businesses varying greatly in purpose and scale – from the White House in the United States to a Girls Agricultural School in Kenya. It is an unique learning experience.

“The Nuffield experience made me really appreciate how valuable it is to get information from the source. Five minutes with the founder of a company is better than five years reading scientific papers and trolling the internet.”

Richard Fowler, 2016 Scholar

Global Focus Programme (GFP)

Two options: March or June start

The GFP is a six-week tour, undertaken with a group of 8-10 international Nuffield scholars from different countries. The group travels to five or six countries, visiting three to four continents.

This component is developed for impact and has an intensive itinerary of visits, meetings and experiences that lead to transformational personal growth.

The group is exploring the social, cultural, political and agricultural practices, strengths and challenges behind and beyond the farm gate.

CORE COMPONENTSDuring the 12 month programme, scholars participate in three core components, two of which are organised by Nuffield International and the third being a scholar driven itinerary to complete individual research.

We support and help our scholars in their endeavours to introduce new information and perspectives to local issues and debates. We offer them various opportunities both during their studies and after that, to present and promote their research and provide thought leadership in the New Zealand media, in front of our investor partners and at a range of industry forums.

How many scholarships are awarded each year?Up to five scholarships annually.

How much is the Nuffield New Zealand Farming Scholarship worth? The total value of the scholarship is NZ$40,000.

Are the awarded funds enough to cover the expected cost? The scholarship funding provided should be sufficient to meet the core components of the programme, depending on time away and number of return trips made.

However, most scholars will invest/seek extra funds as required depending on their research topic to make the most of this opportunity.

Is there a possibility to get additional funding? Our funding is limited to the value of the scholarship. Scholars have been successful in securing other industry and/or Trusts funding.

Can a portion of the scholarship be used to cover the costs of my absence?

The scholarship is not to be used to cover home or work costs i.e. staff replacement etc.

Am I still eligible to apply if I work within the agriculture services sector, but do not farm myself?A small number of scholars have been selected recently from the wider agri-food sector. Applicants from the agri-sector are still expected to be closely connected to farming and/or growing through family, work, land or business ownership.

I am outside of your preferred age range, should I still apply?Scholars outside of our 'ideal' age bracket 30 to 40 years are still welcome to apply and will be considered if they can put forward a good caseof leadership contribution. Please note that the upper age limit is 49 years.

Who provides funding for Nuffield Scholarships? Our funding comes from industry organisations that have strong interest in leadership development for the benefit of the agri-food sector and wider New Zealand economy.

Our current strategic investor partners are: Diary NZ, Beef+ Lamb New Zealand, AGMARDT, FMG.

Programme partners are: Ministry for Primary Industries, FAR, Farmlands, Horticulture New Zealand, Zespri, NZX Agri, TIAA- CREF, LIC/Allflex and Ocular.

Is there a specific area that I have to study? While scholars have the freedom to pursue a topic of personal interest, there is an expectation that the topic will contribute to New Zealand's agri-food sector development.

Where in the world can I carry out my scholarship study?

Nuffield scholars can use the funds of the scholarship to visit any organisation or country to research their topic, meet and interview key people or observe first hand the practices relevant to their study.

What kind of assistance can I expect from the global Nuffield network?A significant and useful network of Nuffield contacts is available in member and associate countries, but scholars are also encouraged to travel outside these countries and establish contacts of their own.

Global Nuffield alumni usually offer to host scholars and are a source of valuable contacts. Previous scholars are a great source of information for potential contacts in particular areas of study or countries that you might like to visit.

What additional support is provided for the completion of the reports?

Good support is provided throughout the year and post scholarship through industry briefings, allocated mentors, specialist advice and research support to ensure our scholars, Nuffield New Zealand and respective primary industry organisations get the maximum outcomes from this unique opportunity.

Do I need to organise my own travel? The Contemporary Scholars Conference and the Global Focus Programme are organised by Nuffield International. All other travel is organised by the scholars to fit their needs.
