Nude Food DayLetter to Parents

Date

Dear parent,

As part of Nutrition Week 2010 “Healthy Food Healthy Planet”, our childcare facility, ,

is participating in a Nude Food Day to encourage healthy food choices that are less processed and packaged.

Our Nude Food Day will be held on

On this day we encourage you to send in healthy food for your children with as little processing and packaging

as you can.

Highlyprocessedandpackagedfoodscanhaveasignificantnegativeimpactonourhealthandthehealthof

the environment. Food processing can result in removing nutrients from and adding kilojoules to the foods we

eat. These processes may use large amounts of energy and water, thereby contributing to global warming and

airpollution.Inaddition,packagingifnotrecyclediscontributingtolandfillandpollutingourplanet.

Choosing whole fresh food with little processing and packaging is good for the environment and is also the

best choice for our health.

Newsletter Article #1Buying Local

Where our food comes from and how it is produced has gained increasing attention from consumers, media, retailers, and government. The food supply chain is a complex thing, needing a balance between:havingenoughnutritiousfoodavailableforeveryone;promotingthehealthbenefitsofeating seasonal vegetables and fruit; storing and preparing food to get the best value for health; and looking after the environment during food production and transport.

At any time that food is stored whether during transportation, at your local shop, or at home, fresh produce can lose some nutrients, particularly vitamins A, B1, B2, C, and E. The fresher the produce the higher the nutrient content. If you have bought fresh vegetables and fruit, remember to store them carefully at home. Bruising and wilting of vegetables and fruit can also lead to loss of important nutrients. For information about the best way to store vegetables and fruit see the following websites:1 www.freshforkids.com.au/storing_food/storing_food.htmlwww.marketfresh.com.au/Purchasing_tips.asp www.extrafresh.com.au/faqs.php

Purchasing local produce is a great way to reduce food miles, while supporting local farmers. Storage times are reduced meaning that food is usually of a higher nutritional quality.

http://www.farmersmarkets.org.au/

Tips for Buying Local:Read labels or ask where produce has come from - choose products that are locally • produced where possibleIf possible find greengrocers, butchers and seafood shops that sell local food• Choose ‘in season’ produce - it is more likely • to be produced locally, is freshest and tastiest and available at the best priceGrow your own or get involved with a • community garden – you can’t get any more local than your own backyard! Shop at farmers markets – food is often • cheaper and you can often talk to the farmer who grew the produceOrder farm fresh produce packs online - delivery to your door•

Store vegetables and fruit carefully at home to ensure their best value for health. •

Newsletter Article #2Processing and Packaging

Food is processed and packaged to prevent contamination, extend its shelf life, and to maintain flavour.However,thiscanhaveasignificantimpactonourhealthandthehealthoftheenvironment.

Large amounts of energy are needed to produce packaging for processed foods. It takes approximately 1,023Cals to produce one glass jar, and 2,159Cals to produce one plastic milk container. Recycling one glass bottle produces 50% less water pollution and 20% less air pollution than making a new bottle from raw materials. It also saves enough energy to run a 100-watt light bulb for four hours.

Foods that require a lot of energy to be produced include:

Snack foods with aluminium lined packaging•

Any over packaged, individually wrapped foods such as lollies or biscuits•

Foods that require less energy for production include:

Unprocessed or minimally processed foods•

Fresh fruit and vegetables•

Locally produced food•

Bulk food with minimal packing per item (this is appropriate only if the food is needed • and won’t be wasted)

Food in recyclable packaging•

Newsletter Article #3Recycling

Recycling Bin Tips:Don’t wrap your recycling waste in a plastic bag prior to putting it in a recycling bin. Plastic • bags cannot be opened, due to safety reasons, and all of your recycling will go to waste To make home recycling easy, organise smaller separate bins for your kitchen and separate • recycling and non–recycling You don’t need to remove labels from recycling waste. This is done at the council recycling • plant once collected If you remove bottle tops and lids from bottles and jars, it will help items compact better in • your bin and help the recycling plant to separate the different materialsTo make the most of your bin space and of the garbage collection truck, crush and squash all • plastic bottles, containers and cardboard boxes before putting them in your recycling bin
