History of Nuclear Energy
20th century was the discovery of radioactive elements
1932 – James Chadwick discovered the lack of charge in a nucleus
1934 – Enrico Fermi bombarded uranium atom
1940 – Nuclear Energy was used in WWII
1942 – Chicago Pile 1 is built in the U.S.A
1950’s and Nuclear Energy
Power Plants are a safe and clean alternative to current energy
1951 – First light bulb is lit
1952 – Eisnhower moves toward nuclear energy
1954 – World’s first nuclear plant generates electricity
1959 – France builds first commercial reactor
Present Day
1970 – 2000 – Nuclear electricity is at 17%
Today there is an increase in nuclear power

Nuclear Energy is the result of power being produced during a nuclear reaction.
The nuclei of the atom releases energy.
Natural nuclear energy is produced by the stars or sun.
How is it Produced?
Pros and Cons of Nuclear Energy
Pros
o Less greenhouse gases
o Technology is well developped
o Cheap
o Easy to meet needs
o Easy to recycle nuclear waste
Conso High construction
costs
o High risk level
o Target for terrorism
o Uranium is expensive
o Lots of waste
o Unknown risks

Power Plants in Washington State
The Columbia Generating Station is a power plant in Washington State.
The reactor output is 1230 megawatts-electric.
It also features 6 towers that are cooled with fans.
The station was very expensive to construct and cost around 3 billion dollars.

Prices…
Nuclear energy costs around 11.70$ for kilowatt/hour.
Prices may rise in the future if there is a shortage of uranium.
Nuclear energy is costly.
Nuclear Energy in the Future…

Nuclear Energy may be a way of the future but due to quite a few risks and dangers it could also be a dangerous future.
