What is ‘123’ agreement
The section restricts:
• The transfer of nuclear technology to other countries that do not set up their nuclear reactors under the control of IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency)
A section of the Atomic Energy Act – 1954

Current status of nuclear capacity of INDIA
• Total electricity production – 1,45,000 MW By using Nuclear energy:• Expected 7-9 percent of total electricity
production• Current production :3-4 percent of total
electricity generation• Expected to achieve 25% of electricity
generation through nuclear energy by 2050.

The Impact of the deal on India
Advantages:~Energy produced from1kg of Uranium = 1500 tons of coal ~Enables India to access nuclear
technology and fuel from NSG ~Less pollution~Strong business tie-ups with the US~Global recognition
![Page 10: Nuclear 12651350118683-phpapp02(2)](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022051820/553b40d94a7959842a8b4695/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Impact of deal on India
Disadvantages of the deal to India:•Estimated expenditure:
– For 20,000 MW production – 4 lac crores– Per unit cost: Rs 5.50
•The deal is not ratified by Indian Parliament.•Insecure transportation, •Logistics management implementation
problem

Other Important Issues
• More discussion is needed on this treaty
• Our R&D work will be slowed
• More understanding and consent of all sectors should have been taken
• What is the procedure to use energy waste?
• It will take 2 to 3 years to get the approval from IAEA
