The skin can be divided into 3 main layers.

This is the top layer, it is made up of skin cells, pigment containing cells (what gives our skin its color), immune cells, and cells that allow us to perceive touch. This layer also houses many other components such as oil glands, sweat glands, and part of the hair follicles.

The second layer, it is made up of blood vessels, connective tissue, elastic fibers, and collagen. The main component of cells of the dermis are fibroblasts. These cells produce collagen and elastic fibers which causes the skin to be firm and elastic.

The third layer consists mainly of fat cells.

Although there are many other components that make up each layer of skin, this is a good general overview.

AGING AND OUR SKIN

AS WE AGE, our skin begins to thin, sag, and wrinkle. We also develop color variations (dark spots), premature wrinkling, and visible blood vessel growth (spider veins). The most common causes of premature aging of the skin is sun exposure and smoking. Other factors that age skin are environmental aspects and genetics.

OVER TIME, the connective tissue, elastic fibers, and collagen all begin to break down, and therefore the skin begins to lose its firm, fibrous network allowing for thinning, wrinkling, and age spots to appear. Aging skin also repairs itself much slower than younger skin. We begin to have a higher likelihood of skin damage, loss of sense of touch, pressure, vibration, and heat/cold changes.
