DISPERSAL SALE OF THENORTHTYNE FLOCK

FOR DON ROBERTSON

ForewordIt is with deep regret and heartache that I have had to make the decision to disperse my beloved flock due to personal circumstances. My first Suffolk’s were purchased in 1988 and then after encouragement from my dear friend and mentor, the late George Lamb, Hadrian Flock, I established the current flock and registered with the society in 1991. After much studying of current lines of the day sheep were purchased from my dear friend to be, the late Gordon J Wilson, Glenisla. His help and support was invaluable and his ability and stockmanship legendary. Original purchases were based on two very successful rams, Muiresk Macbeth and Muiresk Great Nephew, and I have tried where possible to continue with an influence of their genes right through the flock. A study of past sires will no doubt prove this to those who like myself have belief and confidence in bloodlines.

The flock has never been seriously shown although in earlier day’s flock competitions were entered resulting in many placings including Champion & Reserve Flock Northumbria and best small flock at Northern Counties along with best stock ram and best ewe lambs at both on numerous occasions.

2001 was a horrendous year due to foot and mouth though I was lucky; most of my friends were culled then in November the devastating news of Gordon J Wilson’s untimely death. His friend and mine Angus O Wilson, Glenhead, through excellent breeding technique, had established a very successful flock incorporating some of Gordon’s best lines and it was here I saw the blood I needed both through semen and the purchase of stock rams culminating in my final acquisition, Glenhead Infusion, probably the most reliable and consistant breeder ever used in this flock or that of his joint owners Alan & Steven Lawson, Alsnow.

I have culled my ewes that I thought have problems, however slight, so prospective purchasers would not be buying ‘A pig in a Poke’. The older ewes are in the sale for a reason please don’t discount them on age. It was ewes like this from Glenisla that gave me the right start. Over the years the younger Ewes and Gimmers were AI’d and covered once so all lambs were January born for my benefit. A 60 year old ‘one man band’ can only manage a months lambing! The gimmer that didn’t lamb (L46 - lot 33) came into season after the rams were taken out, often the case after artificial oesterus, she is sold with absolute confidence.

May I thank all my friends and purchasers for their support now and over the years with special mention to Alan Lawson without who I could not have got through this.

Don Robertson

Auctioneers ForewordI recommend the attendance at the Dispersal of the Northtyne Flock. The flock is a testimony to Dons attention to depth of Pedigree producing sheep of quality with outstanding skins, colours, carcase and full of character. The Glenhead Stock Ram has been an important part of the great jigsaw of breeding.

Don has been a tremendous advocate of the Suffolk breed promoting its virtues to all. You will not be disappointed with the stock on offer.

REFERENCE TO SIRES

CAIRNESS IMPECCABLE 69360 by Fordafourie Lochnagar

Edinburgh Champion 1990 when purchased by Glenisla for top price of the year, 16,000gns. Joined the Northtyne flock for his third season as a foundation stock ram. His power and carcase had a huge influence with daughters being the mainstay of the flock during the 90’s. He lived to 10 years old and passed this longeivity to his progeny. Semen still stored.

CAIRNESS IMPERIAL 73054 by Stockton Sir John Dam – 33H-D69 by Fordafourie Lochnagar

My first Edinburgh purchase from the best line at Cairness at the time. His paternal Grand Sire was out of a top Muiresk Great Nephew daughter at Glenisla – J53-C1. His super skin and tremendous backend complemented impeccable daughters well and their combination produced milky, easy lambing ewes. Semen still stored.

CAIRNESS KICKSTART by Cairness Court Dam – 33H-L30 by Stockton Sir John

A huge ram though very easy to lamb to. His dam would be one of the two best ewes I ever saw. Being ARR/ARQ, his use was limited at the time which was a travesty looking back. Semen still stored.

GLENISLA SUMO by Crosemanor Commandeur Dam – J53-L61 by Cairness Powerhouse

Another ram of great scale and fleshing purchased privately from Glenisla, he proved himself to be a very sound purchase breeding consistently of both sexes. A great settler of ewes.

Page 11: ntyne

9

SOLWAYBANK INSIGNIA by Glenisla Grimaldi Dam – FHT-U104 by Cairness Conundrum

Purchased privately with Alsnow from my good friends Messrs Barbour, who gave me the pick of the crop that year. His dam has been Ian’s best breeding ewe in her day and came directly down from a full sister to Miuresk Great Nephew. His illustrious sire was a son of the other great ewe who along with 33H-L30 will stay in my mind for ever. Insignia never put a foot wrong and produced really milky, good skinned ewes with beautiful hair. His sons sold well to both pedigree and commercial flocks. Semen still stored.

GLENHEAD IMPREZA 90912 by Glenhead Glaramarra Dam – DHD-X33 by Cairness Expression

A 5500gn Edinburgh purchase with Alsnow, sadly due to accident only one years use. His lambs were exceptionally vigorous at birth and had a super growth rate. A quality ram lost before his time.

NORTHTYNE DRIFTER by Glenhead Impreza Dam – FFH-C13 by Stockton Sahkee

Had much the same attributes as his sire and from a super old ewe still producing good lambs at 8 years old. Although he has played second fiddle to Infusuion most of his working life he has done a really good job. Daughters are great nurses and sons have sold very well commercially as lambs and shearlings.

OTHER PROMINENT SIRES USED VIA FROZEN SEMEN

CROSEMANOR COMMANDEUR 82316

Reserve Champion Edinburgh 1997 purchased by Glenisla for 26,000gns a tremendous breeder of both sexes.

GLENHEAD PURELY THE BEST

Used for his overall quality and pedigree, 20,000gns Edinburgh 1999. His daughters are proving a real asset being consistent breeders and excellent nurses.

GLENHEAD GOLD

26,000gns Edinburgh and used on Infusions first daughters with great success. He left good stock in every flock used. His first son born at Northtyne was earmarked as the flocks new stock ram, sadly not to be.
