Ntec programmes have pathways to various higher qualifications in New Zealand and overseas

Students who have successfully completed a Business or Computing Diploma at Level 5, 6 or 7 at Ntec and meet the academic and English entry requirements for QUT programmes, are eligible to apply for advanced standing.

Graduates of the Diploma in Counselling and Family Therapy (Level 6) are considered as having achieved academic entry into the third year of the Bachelor of Counselling (Level 7) with the successful completion of two additional WelTec courses, a presentation, and the successful completion of an interview.

Ntec graduates of the National Diploma in Hospitality Level 5 gain advanced standing into Le Cordon Bleu Bachelor of Business degree in Hotel or Restaurant Management. Ntec graduates of the National Certificate in Hospitality (Cookery) Level 4 gain advanced standing into the Le Cordon Bleu Diplome Avance de Gestion Culinaire. This pathway arrangement is with the Le Cordon Bleu campuses in Sydney and Adelaide, Australia.

Students undertaking the National Certificate in Hospitality (Cookery) Level 4 have the option of gaining the City and Guilds Diploma in Food Preparation & Cookery 7065 (Culinary Arts) as an additional qualification.

Ntec and Southern Institute of Technology have an agreement for cross-crediting and recognition of prior learning whereby students who have completed the National Diploma in Computing Level 5 and the Diploma in Computing Level 6 at Ntec may gain up to 210 credits towards the Bachelor of Information Technology at SIT.

Students enrolled on the Diploma of Computing Level 7 have the option to gain a Professional Bachelor of Computer Technology from Asia e University subject to the University’s review and acceptance of the student’s qualifications prior to commencing the Diploma of Computing Level 7.

Students having satisfactorily completed the Diploma in Business Level 5 can progress to the 2nd year of BA (Hons) Business Studies at the University of Northampton. Graduates of the Diploma in Business Management (Advanced) Level 6 can progress to the final year of the BA (Hons) Business and Management at the University.

The pathways study programme provides credit towards Wintec’s Bachelor of Business Studies programme for students who have successfully completed the Concordia Institute of Business, Diploma in Business Management Level 5 and Diploma in Business Management (Advanced) Level 6.

Students who have an IELTS of 5.5 with no band less than 5 and who have subsequently successfully completed the Concordia Institute of Business, Certificate of University Preparation for International Students Level 3, have direct entry into the following Massey University degree programmes:• Bachelor of Applied Economics• Bachelor of Accounting• Bachelor of Business Studies

The Bay of Plenty Polytechnic was established in 1982 and each year thousands of students take certificate, diploma and degree programmes in a range of areas. Ntec works in partnership with the Polytechnic for international marketing support and the provision of facilities in Auckland.

• On arrival to New Zealand, we will arrange for free airport pick up (please inform us of the flight details at least 72 hours beforehand).

• We provide a free mobile SIM card to all students.

2. Starting out on campus

• We will provide 2 weeks of free shared hostel accommodation for those enrolled on the Diploma programmes and 1 week accommodation for those on 6 months courses (conditions apply).

• We are happy to assist you in arranging for home-stay.

• We provide notebook/ netbook computers with high specifications for all our Diploma students. Our Ntec Helpdesk assists students with their computers and wi-fi connection.

• There is free wi-fi internet access on campus grounds for all Diploma students. Our computing students receive free licensed software under the Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance.

3. Helping you prepare for a job

• Our curriculum integrates a Professional Skills Development programme into all our Diploma programmes to ensure our students understand the New Zealand way of life, helping them integrate into the community and develop life and job skills needed in the New Zealand environment (please see page 36 for more information).

• We also assist our students with job placements.

• Career Counselling: Ntec has a full-time career counsellor, to assist students find internships and jobs.

Massey University

Students who have an IELTS of 5.5 with no band less than 5 and who have subsequently successfully completed the Concordia Institute of Business, Certificate of University Preparation for International Students Level 3, have direct entry into the following Massey University degree programmes:

This programme prepares students for first-year entry to a range of degree courses at various English-medium universities and polytechnics in New Zealand and overseas. It serves as a bridge between students’ secondary school education and undergraduate studies. As such, it is a transition programme, equivalent to year 13 in New Zealand, year 12 or matriculation in Australia, A Levels in United Kingdom and Higher School Certificate level offered in some countries.

Duration1 year.

Programme ContentThis programme is modular in structure and includes language learning, study skills, acquisition of subject knowledge and development of independent learning. Topics include effective writing, reading academic texts, effective listening in an academic context, effective oral communication, understanding workplace culture, employability skills, introduction to research and referencing, and presentation skills. Other topics include mathematics and statistics, business environment and administration and computer skills such as effective use of word processing, spreadsheets and presentation software.

Programme OutcomesOn completion of this programme students will be able to use English confidently in an academic environment and be proficient in English language. Students will be able to learn effectively, conform to and integrate into undergraduate programmes through effective use of study skills, information and communication technologies, and learning assessment methods. Lastly, students will be able to adjust quickly to living and studying in a Western culture and society.

Having completed NZDB Level 5 and 6 (2010- 2012) in another school. I enrolled in Ntec for the DBM Level 7 programme and found Ntec has a very strong external focus by developing the professional skills and strategic thinking of students to face today’s fast paced job market.

This programme is designed to equip students with the basic and foundation knowledge and skills of commerce and business enterprise. The programme prepares students for business studies in an English-medium environment by first immersing students in a course of studies in business English, introducing fundamental concepts and common practices in businesses and enterprises, such as accounting and marketing, as well as providing a basic understanding of how economic, social and legal factors can impact the way businesses operate and function. Students will also gain knowledge in business management and leadership.

Programme ContentThis programme covers a course in English for academic purposes, basic business disciplines and includes courses in accounting, mathematics, computing, statistics, communication, sociology, economics, marketing, management and law.

Programme OutcomesOn completion of this programme students will be prepared for further business studies at tertiary level where the medium of instruction is English and to be work ready for employment in a business field.

PathwaysThe qualification provides a pathway to the Diploma in Business Management (Advanced) Level 6.

This programme is designed for students who wish to acquire knowledge and skills to commence and progress through a management career in business. The programme focuses on the skills needed by managers and provides students with the ability to understand their organisation’s business needs and develop strategies and action plans to meet those needs. The programme prepares students for further studies in the area of business management or for direct entry into the workforce.

Programme ContentThis programme covers teamwork, information analysis and research, staff recruitment, workplace safety, preparation of budgets and plans, management of people, planning and review of administration systems. The topics covered include budgeting and financial planning, accounting principles, business computing, managing people performance, managing projects, marketing, business communication, introduction to business, fundamentals of small business, managing quality customer service, business law and managing in organisations.

Programme Overview

The BA (Hons) Business and Management is an internationally recognised bachelor’s degree from the University of Northampton but it is not an NZQA approved local New Zealand qualification. The programme is specifically designed for holders of HND qualifications, New Zealand Diploma in Business (or similar UK and international qualifications). The award allows such students to gain a full honours degree in one year. The programme covers key aspects of business and management practice and theory and emphasises the development of individual and group skills. The hospitality industry is one of the fastest growing areas of our economy. A career in hospitality is fun, exciting, creative, and offers worldwide employment opportunities. National Technology Institute (NTI) holds Service IQ accreditation, and is approved by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) to deliver hospitality qualifications.

Why Study at NTI?

NTI delivers national qualifications designed by and for the industry, which ensures that the course content is always relevant and current. Our students and graduates are in demand. Many hotels, restaurants and bars employ our students part-time during their course and offer full-time work after graduation. Employers believe our students have the skills, knowledge and attitude that will make them successful managers. The courses are a mix of theory and practical work with work experience throughout the course in our two cafes. As NTI has two commercial cafes students are able to visit industry trade shows, and along with frequent industry visits and guest speakers, students are able to network with potential New Zealand and international employers.

We support students in additional activities outside of their course work such as industry competitions. Students have been very successful in both the regional and national 2013 Culinary Fare competitions, with all ten students who entered the barista and classic cocktail sections for the 2013 National Fare winning medals - they won five golds, four silvers, and one bronze. Students also have the opportunity to work at the Pacifika Festival, the Food Show and at other major events.

Certificate of Achievement in Barista SkillsThis Barista Certificate gives candidates a comprehensive knowledge of barista skills. The course covers the history and evolution of coffee, espresso technology, and recipes requested in today’s café society. Students gain practical experience using a commercial espresso machine.

Certificate of Achievement in Customer ServiceThis course looks at what it means to offer great customer service, both from a customer’s and an employer’s perspective.

Certificate of Achievement in Food SafetyStudents gain the basic knowledge and skills that are needed to work safely with food.

Certificate of Achievement in Hospitality OperationsCandidates gain a thorough understanding of hospitality core skills such as occupational safety, working as part of a team and understanding employment relations.

Certificate of Achievement in Host ResponsibilityThis course gives candidates a comprehensive appreciation of the responsibilities involved in serving alcohol.

For most Level 5 international students the course is the first year of a two year study programme which concludes with the completion of the Level 6 Diploma in Computing in the following year. The Diploma will allow them to engage in higher level study by taking a learner focused collaborative approach, and in so doing improve their current level of qualification.

Programme ContentThe Diploma is divided into three learning blocks, each containing a combination of sector-specific areas of study and learning outcomes that expose students to aspects of adult learning and health promotions management and training in New Zealand. The Diploma includes the delivery of six papers that total 120 credits, including a 30 credit research paper. The focus areas are Managing and Building Capacity in the Health Care Sector, Health Promotion in NZ, and Conducting Research on a NZ-based Health Care Project.

At the Ntec Toastmasters sessions participants not only get the opportunity

Orientation

On arrival in New Zealand students attend an orientation

programme. This is an opportunity to meet the staff and fellow

students, receive useful course information, and find out more

about life in New Zealand. Orientation includes an introduction

to the various aspects of living in New Zealand covering social

services such as health services and counselling that are available

to students.

Student trips and social activities

Special activities organised for students include horse riding, sailing,

bush walks, ice skating, barbecues and parties.

Multi-cultural festivities

Our students come from many different countries and Ntec ensures

that its students are able to enjoy all the festivities that take place

around the world, in New Zealand. Festivals such as Diwali, known

as the “Festival of Light”, may be celebrated with music and

dance and a light meal in the college café. Each year thousands

of Aucklanders attend the Chinese Lantern Festival. The festival

is one of the events in a series of Chinese New Year celebrations,

and includes food stalls, crafts, fireworks and martial arts displays.

Recognition of Prior LearningIf you already have other tertiary qualifications or previous work

experience, you may be granted credit exemptions and may

complete your qualification in a shorter time. We will be happy to

discuss this with you before or after enrolment. Please contact the

Director of Studies.

Transport and DrivingAuckland City has a comprehensive bus, rail and ferry system.

Weekly fares range from approximately $14 to $48. Special

discounted passes can be purchased at a bus or ferry terminal.Some

students prefer to buy their own car. A second-hand car costs from

approximately $2,000 upwards, a new car costs from $20,000.

If you want to drive in New Zealand, you must have a driver’s

licence. (See details about Drivers’ Licences at http://www.ltsa.govt.

nz/licensing/). As a driver, you must wear a safety seatbelts and

make sure any passenger wear seatbelts too. New Zealand has very

serious penalties for driving while under the influence of alcohol.

Working and Living in New ZealandCurrently there is strong demand in New Zealand for skilled labour.

International students are a valuable source of skilled migrants -

approximately one quarter of international tertiary students go on

to become New Zealand residents. Students may be permitted to

work part-time while they are studying, and full-time on completion

of study. Students may need to apply, and pay a fee, to Immigration

New Zealand for a ‘Variation of Conditions’ to their Student Visa/

Permit to be eligible to work in New Zealand. Diploma students

are normally entitled to work part-time. Students studying English

Language (on courses lasting at least 6 months) can also apply, but

must have an IELTS score of at least 5.0.

Students with valid work permits can use Student Job Search services

(an enrolment fee applies). Student Job Search helps students find

summer vacation and temporary or part-time work. See www.sjs.

co.nz for further information.

On completion of your Diploma studies, you are able to apply

for a Graduate Job Search Visa which will allow you to stay in

New Zealand for a period of up to 12 months to find suitable

employment. You may also apply for a Work Visa. Completion of a

Diploma may also entitle you to immigration points should you wish

to consider migration to New Zealand. Full details of visa and permit

requirements, advice on rights to employment in New Zealand

while studying, and reporting requirements are available through

Immigration New Zealand, and can be viewed on their website at

www.immigration.govt.nz

Facilities for female studentsNtec goes the extra mile in addressing the concerns and needs of

our students. We are mindful of the worries and concerns that

parents have for their children, especially their daughters, when

they begin a new chapter in their lives by studying in New Zealand.

For many, this is the first time they are away from home. As such, we make special arrangements and provide accommodation for female students that is both safe and secure. The accommodation is provided on a first-come-first-served basis.

Each campus is wi-fi enabled, and every diploma student is provided with a current model notebook/netbook PC, which is preloaded with the latest Microsoft software packages.

•JobSearchAssistance: many students would like to work part-time while they are studying (subject to student visa conditions). Workshops on job search techniques, CV writing, interview skills and personal development are conducted for each intake. Students are also given training and assistance in finding full-time jobs in New Zealand on completion of their course. (See also Working and Living in New Zealand, on page 40).

•Library: The library has reference and borrowing materials, and a seating area where students can study. Our staff can advise you about using library facilities at other institutions, and accessing online databases.

•Kitchen: Each campus has a student kitchen equipped with a microwave oven and hot water, and a seating area where students can consume their food and drinks.

• Student Café: The Auckland campus has a student café, where students can buy discounted food and drinks. The cafe is a commercial café and is also used as a training facility for our hospitality students.

•StudentCounselling: Free and confidential counselling services are available to all students. Contact details of our International Student Counsellor are on the Ntec website.

•Student Lounge: The student lounge is available for students to use before class, during breaks and after school.

AccommodationThere are several accommodation options for students, including homestay, hostels, flats, apartments or private board. Our Student Administrator can help students to find accommodation.

Homestay involves living with a New Zealand family. All homestay families have been inspected and approved by our Accommodation Agents. The cost is around NZ$220 per week, and includes most meals.

Application process

To study at National Technology Institute, National Institute of Education, The College of Future Learning NZ or Concordia Institute of Business, students need to apply directly to the school or through a registered Ntec agent.

1. Complete the Enrolment Form (see pages 45 to 46), ensuring all relevant sections are completed, and that the programme of choice is clearly indicated. Please attach:

• Certified copy of passport

• Certified copy of English test (Academic IELTS, TOEFL or equivalent) if applicable

• Certified copies of all relevant academic documents

• Evidence of relevant work experience if applicable.

3. If entry criteria are met, applicants will receive an Offer of Place letter, which will give advice on programme fees (tuition and resource fees), insurance, and date and methods of payment.

4. To accept an Offer of Place, applicants must sign one copy of the Offer of Place and return it, with full payment of all fees, by the due date.

5. When we receive your fees, we will send you a receipt. This must be presented to your nearest Immigration New Zealand office (contact the NZ Embassy or High Commission for details) with a copy of your Offer of Place in order to apply for a student permit / visa. Note that if you are not granted a student visa you will receive a full fee refund.

6. Once your student visa is approved, and we know when you are coming (i.e. your flight details), we will arrange your accommodation (if you wish). You will receive details of your accommodation before you arrive.

Programme Fees and Expenses

By accepting a place in a programme at Ntec, a student enters into a contract for the period of the programme. This means there is an obligation to pay the fees for one year or the length of the programme if less than one year. Programme Fees and Costs Include:

• GST (New Zealand government imposed goods and services tax of 15%).

• All tuition and resource fees for classes.

• The use of audio, electronic and learning equipment whilst on the programme and during self directed study time on campus.

• Access to all school facilities and equipment during school hours or by arrangement with the tutor in charge after class hours.

• Processing, recording and reporting of assessment results and personal data.

• Free wireless internet access.

• Laptop computer for all Diploma students.

Student Fee ProtectionThe New Zealand Government requires that all New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) registered Private Training Establishments must protect all student fees paid to them in advance. National Technology Institute (NTI), Concordia Institute of Business (CIB), The College of Future Learning NZ (FutureCOL) and National Institute of Education (NIE) are registered for Fee Protect through The Public Trust, which has an unsecured capital guarantee from the New Zealand Government. For further information visit www.feeprotect.co.nz

This means that in the unlikely event that NTI, CIB, FutureCOL or NIE is unable to complete the programme in which you are enrolled (this could be because of closure, insolvency, loss of NZQA accreditation or programme withdrawal), the remainder of your student fees (including accommodation and living expenses if paid in advance) will be protected. You will have the choice to receive any remaining fees back or have them paid directly to an alternative education provider.

Student Withdrawals and Fee RefundsThis fee refund policy is in accordance with the Education Act 1989 and amendments, and applies to international and domestic students.

1. If a student withdraws (i.e. stops attending class) from any NTI, CIB, FutureCOL or NIE programme, they must notify the CEO in writing. The date of withdrawal is the date that NTI, CIB, FutureCOL or NIE receives written notification of the withdrawal. The programme start date is defined as the published start date of the programme.

2. a) Programmes thirteen weeks of or more duration:

i. Withdrawal within the first ten working days of the programme: `If the student withdraws from the programme within the first ten working days, they will receive a full refund of any payments, less a deduction of up to 25% for costs already incurred.

ii. Withdrawal after the first ten working days of the programme: No refunds are provided after the first ten working days of the programme.

b) Programmes of 5 to 12 weeks duration:

iii. Withdrawal within the first 5 days of the programme: If the student withdraws from the programme within the first five days they will receive a 75% refund of all fees paid by them, and NTI, CIB, FutureCOL or NIE will retain 25% of the funds paid.

c) Programmes of less than 5 weeks duration:

iv. Withdrawal within the first 2 days of the programme: If the student withdraws from the programme within the first two days they will receive a 50% refund of all fees paid by them, and NTI, CIB, FutureCOL or NIE will retain 50% of the funds paid. If two days constitutes the full amount of tuition paid for by the student, NTI, CIB, FutureCOL or NIE may keep 100% of the payment made for the programme.

d) All programmes:

Students who withdraw before the programme

commences will also be subject to the above

criteria. That is, they will be entitled to a refund

less any amounts allowed to be retained as noted

in (i), (iii), or (iv) above.

3. Students who have already received their

laptop (which is included in their resource fee),

will not receive a full refund of their resource

fee if they subsequently withdraw from their

programme, and will be able to keep the laptop.

4. If a student is not granted a student visa or

an extension of their student visa a full refund of

their unused fees will be made.

5. Refunds will be processed within 30 days of

withdrawal, will be paid in New Zealand dollars,

and will go to the person or organisation that

paid the fees, not necessarily the student.

6. An international student who obtains

permanent residency, while studying on a

student visa, will not receive a refund of fees

for the remainder of the academic year in which

residency is granted. However, they will be

treated as a New Zealand permanent resident

for the following years and will be subject to

domestic fees for the remainder of their study at

NTI, CIB, FutureCOL or NIE.

7. If the student is expelled from the programme,

it is unlikely that any refund will be made.

8. These regulations may be varied in exceptional

circumstances that are beyond the control of

the student (such as medical or compassionate

circumstances). Variation is at the discretion of

the CEO.

9. Immigration New Zealand will be informed

of all information which affects the status of a

student permit or visa.

We at Ntec believe in being responsible citizens of New Zealand, and it is our commitment to this belief that we also see a need to impart such values to our students. Students are taught the New Zealand way of doing business as well as work culture and ethics.

Environmental InitiativeNtec has undertaken to support initiatives in New Zealand to improve the environment. A team of students has been working for 4 hours each week on a reserve about 20 km from the college. The group has been involved in clearing weed trees from the area of native bush and then preparing the land for planting of native trees. In total during the last year, they worked for more than 400 hours. This commitment from Ntec and the students has been of immense benefit to this project. Students were presented with certificates by Graham Falla, member of the Friends of Mangemangeroa committee at the 2012 March Graduation Ceremony to acknowledge their contribution.

Diabetes New ZealandDiabetes New Zealand is a national charity that represents people with diabetes. Ntec students have volunteered at Diabetes NZ Auckland located at Mount Eden, offering their services to help with administrative tasks, such as preparing flyers, letters and mailers. Our students have also been called upon to assist at the society’s events, helping to serve drinks and refreshments. Our students have found the engagements meaningful as they spend time on a worthy cause. Furthermore, through helping out at events, they are able to network and communicate with a wide and diverse range of people.

Blue Dragon Children’s FoundationBlue Dragon Children’s Foundation is an Australian organisation working on the streets of Vietnam to make a lasting change. They help kids get off the streets, into safe homes, and back to school. Since Blue Dragon started in 2003, they have helped over 1100 children to go to school – including street kids, children with disabilities, and trafficked children. Ntec is honoured to be working with Blue Dragon in offering full scholarships to their children for them to study at our colleges, imparting knowledge and skills that will enable them to build their own careers

upon their return to Vietnam. Community Engagement

Ntec and the Auckland Chamber of Commerce have signed an agreement for Ntec graduates to be part of the New Kiwis, which links New Zealand employers with skilled migrants eligible to work and currently living in New Zealand. Ntec level 6 graduates who have their graduate job search visas will be able to attend the New Kiwis Career Success course, which is free to participants, and provides graduates with job search skills, and networking opportunities.

Ntec has four campuses, in Auckland, Christchurch, Tauranga and Hastings, with the head office in Auckland. Each campus is centrally located and close to public transport, cafes, food courts and libraries.

The Hastings campus is also the Head Office of FutureCOL and is located within the main business district of central Hastings. This Hastings campus is a large modern building with student facilities such as an in-house café, sports area and outside communal area. The college has plenty of parking facilities and other features that make this site very conducive to learning.
