Guiding Values

• The National Society of Physical Activity Practitioners in Public Health (NSPAPPH) believes:

• Physical activity practitioners should employ their unique opportunity and responsibility to influence policies and environments which make healthy behaviors the easy choice;

• Physical activity interventions should address all levels in which we live, work and play; individual, community, organizational, environmental and informal and formal policies targeting all ages, cultures and abilities.

Guiding Values

• In keeping with these guiding values, NSPAPPH will respect the following purposes:

• * To elevate the voice of the physical activity public health professional through collaborative efforts;

• * To engage and educate key decision makers and advocate to elevate physical activity as a public health priority;

• * To increase the capacity of physical activity public health professionals and supporters at all levels to promote health and reduce chronic disease and address other public health issues related to physical activity;

• * To promote evidenced based and promising practices to encourage increased and sustained physical activity;

• * To expand partnerships and collaborative efforts, as appropriate, while simultaneously creating a defined identity as physical activity practitioners.

FIT Kids Act(H.R. 3257 and S.2173)

• Supports quality physical education and physical activity for all public school children through grade 12 and ensures they receive important health and nutritional information

‘Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans Act of 2008’ (H.R. 5639)

• Proposes instituting the Secretary of Health and Human Services publish a physical activity guidelines report, at least every five years, through a review process where physical activity guidelines are submitted, medically and scientifically reviewed, and approved or disapproved

NIH Funding Estimates

• The National Institutes of Health “Estimates for Funding for Various Disease, Conditions, Research Areas

• PA absent from 214 research areas listed that NIH is required to report to the Secretary of DHHS and Congress

• PA absent from the 360 categories NIH tracks for funding estimates

Complete Streets Act of 2008 (S. 2686)

• Proposes to make the streets of our cities and towns for everyone, whether young or old, motorist or bicyclist, walker or wheelchair user, or public transit rider

• Increase the capacity of the transportation network, better use of taxpayer dollars, improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety, encourage healthy and active lifestyles and fight climate change
